Crytek explains why Crysis 3 Wii U 'had to die'
CEO Cevat Yerli says game was running on Nintendo's new console, but lack of EA-Nintendo business drive killed the project.
Crysis 3 for Wii U was up and running, but it was not meant to be. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli explained to VentureBeat that a lack of Electronic Arts-Nintendo business drive ultimately killed the project.
"We did have Crysis 3 running on the Wii U," Yerli said. "We were very close to launching it. But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn’t launch on the Wii U ourselves--we don’t have a publishing license--Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die."
Crysis 3 was never a sure thing for release on the Wii U. In May 2012, Crytek director of creative development Rasmus Hoejengaard said there was "not a fat chance" that Crysis 3 would ever ship for the Wii U.
That wasn't the end of the story, though, as Yerli clarified two months later that the game was possible for the Wii U, before revealing in January that it would not release for Wii U.
Yerli recently described Crysis 3 as Crytek's "masterpiece." He claimed the game game is technically and creatively superior to past entries, but said the project took a critical hit due to gamer "fatigue," among other things.
