Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

haha badmouth it is you sony fanboys badmouthed Nintendo first and provoked an argument that angers many people. all of you ruthless and thoughtless sony fanboys are responsible for this chaotic war between consoles which is pathetic... Unless ppl like you stfu then it will help to end this. Sony betrayed Nintendo by trying to take over the company and ceased to take part in a teamwork agreement. Then a decade later... Microsoft created the xbox that (bulky controller copied PS2 and 64 controls) exactly to compete with Sony and Nintendo in the video game market.

snakepliskin35 First off which Wii article are you referring to? Was it negative press? Maybe I missed it since I have been here so much as of late. And at first I was against the Wii and the controller. I thought it was gimmicky and I felt the "retro gaming library" was done soley to make the console look better than it really was.. ..once I saw the Nintendo press conference I actually had an interest in the Wii (I am stil unsure if my opinion on the retro gaming thing has changed, I will wait it out and see)... Microsoft and Nintendo people? Hmm..well seeing as how most of the people bashing Sony do it because of things Sony has said and or done and then turn around 180 degrees and say something entirely different.. ..or do things like blatantly lie about "real time" game footage at a press conference..*cough* KIllzone 2 *cough* motorstorm *cough*.. ..or complain about a competitors business practice and then do the EXACT thing themselves..(2 SKUs) ..or make a press conference about launch areas and dates and then abandoning and entire territory.... (european launch fiasco) ..or promote a Giant Crab and real time weapon switching as "next gen" game play..(no comment needed).. I have far from badmouthed the PS3 per say, but I do point out what I feel are negatives about the system, the business tactics or sonys sheer arrogance in everything PS3.. You shouldn't lump everyone into a catergory because they don't share you views on the topic at hand. Fanboys blindly hate and tend to post stupid comments about other consoles and the people that like them.. FANS may show bias for one or more consoles, but will try to be fair and not blindly hate on the other system(s)...they will usually try to make points and statements about the topic at hand and will try to reasonable in their comments, logic and thinking..(usually anyway..lol).. Which catergory do you fall into?..hmmm? My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com P.S...and just FYI..i am going to buy a PS3, but it'll be once the price drops...$600 is way too high for general mass acceptance (the casual gamers that make up 95-97% of the game market won't drop $600 for a console, not to mention games, accessories, etc..

Just buy a PS3 a couple years later when Sony is slowly slipping away from the video game counsle market (remember Sega). They'll be real cheap then. Every 11 years, the power of video games switch (1985-1996 Nintendo, 1996-2007 Sony, 2007-???? Microssoft and/or Nintendo).

masterdeath31 Yeah. Maybe the rumor is just that, a rumor, and all this is unwarranted...that's what I hope anyway. Sony is too smart to pull something like this, at least I hope they are..(oh the lashing they would get if this turned out to be true...not even the biggest fanboy could overlook something like this)... masterdeath31 Well that's just it. As far as I know the rumor has never been denied by Sony (maybe it was and I missed it. I am wrong all the time..lol..) But to the best of my knnowledge Sony has neither confirmed nor denied the rumor.. Take that how you wiil (you'd think Sony would jump at the chance to deny this given all the bad press they've gotten lately..but maybe that's just me).. Kevin legionosh@msn.com

coneman1 Yeah I am lookling forward to getting the HD-DVD addon for my 360. As long as it's at the rumored $200 price point or less I will be very happy. :-) I agree about the launch systems having their share of problems (which CD based system HASN'T had problems at launch...besides maybe the saturn and the GC?).. I will get a PS3, but it will be probably after the price drops a little, and after the kinks have been worked out... Kevin legionosh@msn.com

I usually wait a little while in between each console I buy, just so I can get a good amount of fun, and use in the previous console, yes I do plan on buying a ps3, but I really doubt it will be any time near the release, I usually wait close to a year, after I buy a new console, just so I wont really have to rush and get one, and so it will give the company some time to make a larger variety of games and stuff.. that is why I waited so long to get my 360... but I will own one probly in the near future :) :)

Well since I already have the Xbox 360 and will be getting the external HD-DVD addon, I'm pretty sure I have the better system. I really don't think that all this hoopla about the PS3 is justified, you know that it's going to have all sorts of bugs and gremlins or just the "New" problems with the Blueray setup. mainly because Sony themselves are having problems with the Blueray system, read the news & Blogs everywhere it's rediculous, they have had how many years to develop this system and still are having problems. I guess I'll wait until christmas 2007 and maybe things will be all fixed by then, and oh yeah, shorter lines too...

t_walk1 Very good points. I still have my PS2 (although a friend is borrowing it at the moment until he buys another DVD player). I did have to sell my PSP to buy my MP3 player, but I hadn't used it for games in months and it was very bulky to use for music, hence my selling it. But I will be the first to tell you I have enjoyed many a game on my PS2, as well as my XBOX (my old GC had a couple on it..too bad my DS only had castlevania DS..lol)... Sony has changed their tune a bit since the initial announcement of the PS3. Several features have been dropped since the accouncement, they went ahead with the two SKU business model (which they blasted Microsoft for, but at least the 360 core IS a 360 sans the HD. It lacks NO features of it's big brother, they have pushed dates around (which honestly happens somtimes..hard to call that an outright lie per say).. ...but it's their utter arrogance that just gets severly uner my skin (I don't like arrogant people anyway..lol). Their boasting, bragging and what not doesn't do much to help their image at the moment. I hope the PS3 does well (the market NEEDS competition, everyone hopefully knows that). I don't want it to fail, regardless of how the fanboys take my posts. I do feel however that the price is too high for general mass acceptance (I have gone in depth on that topic many times so I'll refrain from that for the moment)... i do wish however that the fanboys would listen to reason or at least look at all the facts before you start blabbing about stuff that you may or may not know anything about.. ..and just a reminder for the fanboys..Blu-Ray does NOT = MAGICAL GAMING EXPERIENCE. I don't see the logic. 9GB (and less than 9GB) games (well the high profile ones) can cost in the multi millions to produce as it is. Do you think the devs will double and triple their cost to produce a game for Blu-Ray so they can fill up 25GB+ worth of space? I doubt it. It's totally different to produce a game for a console with a 50-60 million console user base. That's practically a no brainer. But the PS3 has NO user base to speak of per say. Sure it will sell (how often do new consoles NOT sell, especially from companies like Sony), but how well it will sell at the $600 price point is the issue. Why spend any more on a game than they have to? if they can fit the game in 9GB or less of space, why use sloppy compression schemes and whatnot just to take up more space? Devs have to be efficient to avoid long load times, etc..and if they DID make a game that filled up all 25GB, the production costs are bound to at least double if not triple, and if the game bombs it's a possibility the dev could go out of business.. So just keep that in mind when you back Blu-Ray for no reason what so ever.. Then there are the "yet to be denied by sony" rumors that games will only be able to be played on the system they were originaly played on..meaning no game rentals, no used games, heck not even the ability the bring the game to a friends house.. ..of course the above rumor could end up being false, but to the best up my knowledge Sony has yet to deny this (and you think will all the BAD press Sonys had lately they'd jump on ANY chance to redeem themselves).. My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com

Damn, I just caught homey's post. If I was that cat I wouldn't be able to show my face in public again... let alone these forums. Change your username or something dawg... Straight up, I can respect a dude for saying "I'm getting a PS3, period". I can respect a dude for analyzing why he is/isn't copping a 360 or Wii. But these dudes who have nothing intelligent to say but "PS3 rules, M$ sucks..." or vice-versa, seriously, grow up. Cats need to kill it with a skillet before y'all end up getting pwned like HunAndras1984. rl_41...I think the reason Sony's shipping the majority to the US is because the US is "must have" territory for them- just as Japan was for Mdot. Sony's pretty much got Japan on lock (with regards to MS at least) so they don't feel they have to worry too much about that territory- especially since Nintendo's not really in the next-gen race with them. Now you cats have fun... I'm off to the club with my peoples. 1.

For all thats being said here I think we are forgetting the big picture. I don't think anyone here hasn't played a PS game (going back to the PS1/dreamcast days to current times) and enjoyed it to some degree or another. I know, personally, I used to love Sony as a whole. I played PS1, and PS2. I own a PsP and was originally pulling strongly for the PS3 when it was first annouced. But the problem is this. Sony has let us down/changed thier story so many times when it comes to the PS3 I just can't get over it. Yes when the system finally is up and running and all the bugs are worked out of production I am sure it will kick alot of ass. But between the price tag, the release dates being pushed back several times now, production numbers not makeing the grade, the HD promises, the PC comparisons, the fact that I still have yet to see something other than a picture of the machine (let alone play it) I simply can't get behind it. Good luck with it all Sony I hope it works out in the end but your are certainly off to a bumpy start.

ShadoweaverCode Thanks for taking the time to look into some of what I was saying. I try to make it a point not post stuff unless it has at least some sort of data to back it up.. ;-) I admit (as I stated earlier) that I am pulling for HD-DVD. It seems to be the most logical choice at the moment. If Blu-Ray wasn't A) so cost prohibitive (the disc media and the production of it), B) wasn't so prone to scratching and C) the damned players weren't at least a $1,000 a pop maybe it would be the better choice since it is capable of 25GB/50GB (single/dual layer) of storage.. ..but like you said if you scratch it be warned your Blu-Ray disc could very well be ruined.. Thanks for taking the time to look into that stuff shadow...I appreciate it. :-) kevin legionosh@msn.com

ciryorel ***PS3 is going to be the WINNAR legonosh.*** First off learn to spell WNNER and LEGIONOSH..neither of which are too difficult I would think.. Secondly..I never said the PS3 COULDN'T win. I HAVE said however that I feel the $600 price point it too expensive for the average CASUAL gamer (you remember them right? the people that make up 95-97% of the entire gaming market? yeah, THOSE casual gamers)..without their support any system would fail, no matter what. And too think that Mr. Joe casual gamer is going to walk into a store and spend $700 (PS3 + 1 game + tax) is silly. The majority of americans don't have the disposable income to blow $600 on a console..I feel it will come down to that initially. Once the price drops to a "casual gamer" friendly level then I am sure it will do better... ..but until then, once the hardcore gamers get their PS3 fix, we'll see how the masses react to a $600 console.. Guess what. We can send this post to the Guiness records, as the board with the biggest amount of fanboys(all 3 TMs) **** in the world.

"PS3= Wii + 360 + Blu Ray player" That dosen't make any sense. Sure the PS3 is going to have a slight edge in power over the Xbox360, but that's hardly going to even be noticeable up front, graphics-wise or in any other respect. Throwing the Wii in there makes no sense because Nintendo themselves have announced that they are not trying to make a "next-gen" system with the Wii. And as for the "Blu-Ray" part of it, well... You haven't played the PS3. You haven't played the Wii. I will bet money you have never watched a movie on Blu-Ray. And i'm just assuming by the fanboy-ness that screams "I HEART SONY" that you've probably not even given the 360 a chance. So basically you are just taking a bunch of stuff you've heard about, but have no experience with, and saying that one of them is just as good as the other 3 combined. Nice. Completely ignorant, but nice. Here's a better equation for you, and at least this has history backing it up - An overpriced paperweight IS NOT equal to a system that has pretty much just as much power and most of the games that made Sony competitive to begin with, a system which is catering to a different audience alltogether, and a DVD-player which be obsolete as soon as the next format war is over.

oh one more thing, thought this was kind of important read this on one of those previously posted sites. so if you scratch you blu-ray disc, no options for backup! better take precious care of those little devils. they both have their pros and cons, but I think Sony's DRM scheme is overkill, and they are destroying our chances to be able to do whatever we want with our own media. They have the right to stop piracy, but they shouldn't be allowed to stop me from making back-up copies of my own disks, or transfering my movies to a pmp. I'm all for HD-DVD.

LegionOSH - I decided to do some research after hearing alot from you about blu-ray and hd-dvd. looks like you were right, and so far hd-dvd is winning. so far i have seen a webpage back in june that complains of blu-ray color being distorted and over saturated, mind you that was back in june so im still looking for something more current, specifically picture comparisons but they are rare. but the most important fact that i did find, is that you were right, in some ways. blu-ray is easier to scratch because there is less (plastic?) covering the actual data. on hd-dvd there is enough room for you to actually scratch the disk (in theory of course), without affecting data, as to where blu-ray puts the data very close to the outer edge, but i have read that one of the reasons why blu-ray is more expensive is they have put a more scratch-resistant material in place of the regual material to help protect the data, which means making it at best just as effecient as hd-dvd, but i doubt it, i would rather have the extra room, but we'll see. but yes it does look like hd-dvd is winning, mostly because hd-dvd can be made with the dvd presses that companies already have. blu-ray disks mean companies will have to modify their presses in some way, effecting production costs making it more expensive. << LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>

Sony gave promises and they did not keep them to the magnitude of what they were bragging about. FIrst they tone down the PS3's launch (ESPECIALLY for eager Europeans), and what's next? Not being able to keep their promise on the PS3 being such a 'revolutionary and evolutionary entertainment experience'? After this, Im starting to think so. Yet another nail in the coffin for Sony...

cesare, just to set you str8 dawg I'm first and foremost a PC gamer (3.2 GHZ HT P4, 1 GB, 200GB HD)- console gaming is the ish but I've had to rely more and more on gaming on my PC since my company posted me to Africa (too much trouble lugging my xbox and PS2 through customs everytime I travel, and then there's the voltage differences). Now, "u2i_l0ver"... regarding being adult, try 28 years old, interactive designer. That's as much personal info as you're getting from me (there's one or two other people on this thread who also know I played ball back in college...'sup gamefan1980). I still own my old school Super Famicom and rock my Genesis Plus Emulator on my Pocket PC (Eten M500, WM5) every chance I get. I still own my Dreamcast and believe it is the second greatest console ever, second only to the PS1. I am a gamers gamer, not some dumb a$$ fanboy. I can certainly afford to get a PS3 BUT will not spend 600 beans + tax on a mere console... for that price it better do the damn dishes and cook a mean steak too. Also, unfortunately for Sony, I'm EXTREMELY skeptical of anything they say because I was one of the people they decieved with their "facts" about the PS2. I copped a PS2 when it first dropped and ended up spending waaaaay more time rocking DC and PS1. Xbox dropped and it was exactly what I had hoped the PS2 would have been, plain and simple. So get it straight, the PS3 is a marginally better system (as I said before) but for me that isn't enough to warrant a $200 plus tax price hike. No way, no how. I could invest half that change in upgrading my PC's graphic card to a beast that's light years ahead of either the 360 or PS3. As it stands now, I don't have much time to dedicate to gaming... it's mostly a weekend thing with my boys or online, maybe for a couple of hours, 4 tops. You think I'm going to drop 600 beans for that? You must be out your damn mind.

thesuperbean ***P.S. HD-DVD is going to wipe the floor with Blu-Ray, simply because it has the famous brand name, which people will flock to, like moths to the flame!*** I hope HD-DVD wins. With the players being HALF of Blu-Ray and the discs (from what I have seen, but I have heard people say otherwise) around $5 more on average, and the quality being AS good if NOT better than Blu-Ray, it almost seems silly to pay double for the player, and more for the movies.. This is of course my opinion. I know some people support Blu-ray and that's fine. But at least have a logical reason. Blu-rays only positive is the storage space. The discs are supposedly very prone to scratching despite Sonys efforts to coat them against that. My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com

tigerthug is right... His words got me thinking. We are GAMERS. all of us. It doesn't matter if we play 360 or PC or anything else. You can have your opinions about what you think, debates are always fun but when it really comes down to it respect your fellow gamer. For when the time comes where the government tries to put ban's and limits on the game industry, its going to take every single one of us to march on washington... remember that =)

Is there anybody that didn't see this coming from a mile away? P.S. HD-DVD is going to wipe the floor with Blu-Ray, simply because it has the famous brand name, which people will flock to, like moths to the flame!

For goodness sake, why people still argue about this? Personally, I never wanted to buy the PS3 after hearing the rediculous launch price. I own all the major systems, and I would personally go for either the Xbox 360 for Dead Rising or the Wii (god forbid). The PS3 isn't gonna make history with the Blue-Ray, it's just making it's path down the drain. Sony is gonna have more trouble with it than it's worth. Who the f*** wants to pay $600 PLUS TAX (depending in which country or state), for a new console?. Well, lots of people obviously. I think Sony already know that the PS3 isn't gonna sell what the PS2 sold, so there staying safe by building a limited number of PS3's.

Jermwarfare i cant belive how many people say they're buying a ps3 just for mgs4!$600+ for an overrated game!im mean the first one was aight, but after that it just went to total crap.why dont you grow up and play some SC[the adult version of MGS]?which should be on all 3 systems in some form sorry i had to come back to just say something to this guy..metal gear isnt overrated its amazing..every metal gear is new and innovative unlike splinter cell which is a crappy rainbow six type engine with crappy fps features. you wanna talk overrated..i say halo,fear,prey..and any other fps for that matter..they are all the same games blast this alien with this gun with this vehicle except this year we will make the graphics better!
