Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

haha man i dont even have a printer as is...thats why schools have them. well first i never called it a supercomputer and i want to know if you are even buying a ps3? otherwise why are you even talking here. i know what linux is i know how complicated it is...i see it like this full potential 360 with tax(xbox with hd 399.99, hd-dvd estimate price 199.99, xbox live 1 year 50?, and 8.25% sales tax = 762.98..games and tvs are depending on you.... ps3 full potential plus tax = ps3 60gb 599.99 plus 8.25% sales tax = 703.99, and once again games and tv depend on you. wii = 170-300 and the best buy between the 3 but whatever

hmm... don't know why my previous post disappeared. Anyway, a quick reiteration: ""XBOXSUCKS847 ok people let me tell you something about the ps3. it isnt just a game console. having linux installed into it means it is also a computer"" 0. Given that a calculator is in fact a simple computer, every game console is also in fact a computer. 1. Linux can run on near obsolete hardware. That's part of it's appeal- in addition to being free (which is why Sony's using it). 2. Other consoles have previously run Linux... that doesn't make them "supercomputers": the Dreamcast was modded to run Linux more than 2 years ago; the PS2 has it's own Linux distribution Kit, and the Xbox has been modded to run Linux and homebrew applications. 3. If you want to talk OS's, the Dreamcast, Xbox, and 360 all run on some version of Windows CE (that's why developers prefer the 360, because it's a familiar environment). 4. As great as Linux is, it isn't the most user-friendly OS available. Because of a lack of developer and publisher support a lot of things (primarily hardware) must be manually configured by hand, and it's no walk in the park if you're a n00b. No doubt Sony will release proprietary hardware that will be plug and play, but generic devices (printers, scanners, etc) may well need custom drivers and manual detection (as they do on the PC). Most likely, like the Dreamcast before it, you'll be able to surf the web, download ish, email etc. If you're a C++ or unix programmer you'll be able to develop homebrew games. But that'll be about it. Good luck printing out that term paper- the PS3 will NOT be a replacement for a good PC, no matter what hype Sony's spinning (I guarantee you Sony's headquarters aren't running off PS3's but Windows and/or MAC boxes).

Average folks are going to walk into places like walmart, best buy, ect ect....with $700 in their pockets to get a ps3 and walk out with a wii or an xbox. The simple truth is that you cant put a pre-order slip under the xmas tree and expect your kid to be happy with it. Regular people are not like us they wont camp out or have such a strong emotional attachment to the playstation brand that they will wait till march to get a ps3. I really want this system to be a hit if for no other reason that it makes all games better in the long run, But this is a big fat xmas present for M$ and the big N.

True, Linux is great. Kate is also a lot easier to use than Notepad too for its great color-coding feature, I'd say.

ok people let me tell you something about the ps3. it isnt just a game console. having linux installed into it means it is also a computer. so people like me, who need a new comp and a next gen system, can get both in one good 600 package that comes with blu ray too or the 500 package. for me these are all positives. i honestly dont care if i cant get one in nov ill try but being at school makes it hard. also there isnt a slight difference is graphical power, it is pretty drastic. since sony used the cell processer they got a special graphics card from nvidia that works together with the cell to draw even more power then you think plus games will run on 1080p. now once again buy what you want and be happy.

Is that less units than the 360 shipped to the US when it was released? Or a little more? Either way it's gonna be like the 360 launch, people camping in front of stores, paying insane amounts of money for them on eBay. Basically it's gonna be ugly, alot like the 360 launch...so i'm thinking that it will be at least a few months before everyone can get a PS3 if they have the cash... So for all you people who are excited about the release date (whenever that will be), don't get too excited because unless you pay much more than it's worth, or camp in front of stores for 12 hous then it's unlikely that your getting one..

I only need one. The reason there are less in Japan is that the 360 isn't as much of a threat there. They want that market in the US that is holding out for Sony's next gen console. If they don't get one in the US they will prob buy a 360 because the wait is way to long for the PS3. In Japan no one wants a 360 so the maket is safe there with a shortage because ppl will wait.

People you can't get mad at something you don't already own. I see you guys runnin' around here like your grandma told you she was a stripper in her hey day. Sony said they were planning on shipping 2 mil in three territories right? Well if you do your math, the U.S. wasn't gonna get that much more anyway. You figure we would have gotten about 800 thou, japan around the same, and europe getting the rest so were getting half of our initial shipment like the previous launch so just stop it. Half of these folks weren't planning on getting one first day anyway. It's funny how when the 2 mil was announced poeple went on a tear saying it wasn't gonna sell, now at 500 thou, poeple are complaining that it's not enuff and something just don't add up with that. As far as Microsoft licking their chops, if I can recall, alot of xbox's killer apps aren't coming out until '07 anyway which on has them breathing a sigh of relief that Sony fumbled on the 1 yard line.

Well I'm adding another comment cause I felt this is necessary. All of those who hate Sony for this don't understand just how complexed it is to create something with this kind of technology. I MEAN COME ON! They are dealing with stuff that is very recent breakthroughs in electronic entertainment. So before you decide to hate Sony try to consider this fact. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO BUILD THE TECHNOLOGY THEY ARE CREATING! Sorry if I was rude, but as I said before, I felt it necessary to say it.

Wow. Just wow. More bad news from Sony just keeps pouring in. It's not surprising. They've gone from an excellent, reliable company to a complete, total laughingstock. Can't they do anything right? Looks like the real competition will be between the Wii & the 360, as I will be getting both of those ( & by the 360, I mean by the premium version). I won't be paying a single penny on the PS3 until the Premium version goes down to at least $400. That's about all I can tolerate on spending on a home gaming console.

"True_Sephiroth8 ... All of you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Nobody really *cares* about all this" You have some very idealistic points and yes, most of us miss those days. But the fact is, those days are long gone. Corporations have seen that the video game industry is even more viable than hollywood, and now making a game is a multimillion dollar undertaking. We have to be real careful who we chose to put in the driver's seat. Case in point: EA versus 2K. EA is a great developer but they got lazy. The 2K series came along and brought comp to the table forcing EA to innovate and get better. And this is where the line was crossed: instead of fostering healthy competion ala Mario vs Sonic, EA instead bought out the NFL licence, a first in history. Because of that a perfectly good developer (arguably better than EA Sports) and a perfectly good series bit the dust. The consumer, instead of having a choice of two great series now was forced to have only one. If EA decides to raise the price of a game we have to eat it. If EA decides to get lazy, we have to eat it too. If they decide to can the series altogether, we still have to eat it. Videogames have matured past the days of old. I fully intend to add the PS3 to my arsenal (SNES, PS1, DC, PS2, Xbox, 360) once/ if the price drops significantly. Unfortunately for the gamer it's strictly business now and if you haven't realized this in the past 2 or so years then it may be you who needs to "wake up and smell the coffee".

Im curious thou, I wonder why so many people feel like they feel about sony.. they tend to hate, I mean really hate sony, they send out such strong harsh words, the people are acting like sony killed their family or something.. I dont get it, I dont hate any gaming company or... anything as much as people are saying they hate sony, the only thing I can see is that sony has so much stuff going on about then that is mostly hate mail and rumors.. and people read it and believe everything they see on the net.. what ever happend to "seeing is believing"

Considering they are doing more advanced work in their hardware than the others, they're doing pretty well. Only problem is that I can only imagine the problems they didn't have time to fix during beta testings.

I'm getting worryied about sony. So much hate going on so much sayings of they will fail. I can understand why since I am getting up with the news but still playstation has been second father in the history of gaming consoles and almost pretty much the main father when the PS2 game out. I myself am not turning to the Wii because well I just dont see that many titles and nothing is making me jump out of my seat for the PS3 yet. THe online serivces is still unknown. There is no real word or saying how good it would be to the 360 dashboard/ xbox live. I'll watch and see what happens.

... All of you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Nobody really *cares* about all this Xbox fan: 'NOTHER FOOT DUG BY SONEH PS fan: LIES! ALL LIES! Wii fan (apparently the only sensible one in this argument) : *blink* Complaining and lashing out at either one of the companies is pointless, and only degrades yourselves. If you want to prove that your console is the best, act like you have some God-Given sense, instead of screeching at each other like monkies. It makes you, and what you're representing look bad. I'm moderately young, yes. I have also been here since Sony first came out with PS. During that time, the fans never argued the way you guys are at the moment. It consisted of: "Hey...You have a PS." "Yes I do. You have a nintendo, correct?" "Yeah!" "So you like video games too!?" It used to be about the games, not the power, or the pricing. I admit, I do own a PS2. I also own a Gamecube, and play my friend's Xbox whenever I get the chance. This is still, and will forever be about the games. Example: PS3--FFXIII 360--Halo 3 Wii--Super Smash Bros: Brawl. These are all games I would wait in line for. So instead of degrading yourself, think to yourself: "Hm...That's interesting." Don't hate one because you have the other. Feel free to E-mail or IM me. I like to talk. jakechaos@hotmail.com

"chazy035 -ACTUALLY the PS3 to my opinion is no longer a gaming console it is the top line of the Super-computers. It is not something for the faint of heart. Sony PS3 is not for everyone. It is not for the meek." It's spelt AUDACITY, not ORDACITY dun. A top-of-the line super-computer? The PS3? Don't make me laugh. An Intel Dual-Core processor with a FireGL graphics accelerator and 3+ GB of RAM is a super-computer (pretty much standard specs for CGI studios and high-level interactive media designers). The PS3, 360 and Wii are a joke compared to those specs. Hell, the PS3 isn't even as powerful as a good dual-core Intel gaming PC with 2GB RAM and a Radeon X1900 (from the specs released)- and I'm talking pure processing power and performance. Come on dawg, get serious. You're buying into the company line my man... same thing they said about the PS2 being a "super-computer"... and that ended up being a little more than PS1.5. Me, I'm patiently waiting. we're still in the DVD era (and will be for the next year or so). By the time the HD era is in full effect and the format wars are more clearly defined, IF the PS3 price drops significantly I'd probably pick it up primarily as a Blu-Ray player, secondly as a gaming console. But that's only if Blu-Ray is winning the "war". I'm not even going to cop the 360 HD-DVD accessory till then as there's no real need for it now. For the now, in my opinion the 360 is the more prudent choice. I don't mind paying $50/year for the best (and believe me it is) online experience on the planet and I get a very similar gaming experience to the PS3 for hundreds of dollars less. When the time comes (ie: a year from now), given a satisfactory price drop (for the games too) and a clear leader in the HD war I may well likely pickup a PS3... but not with things the way they currently are. You cats are forgetting one very important fact: the most important thing is the user-installed base. The original xbox was light years ahead of the PS2, but because of the PS2's larger install base (due to it's 1 yr+ head-start) it dominated sales. The 360 now has that advantage. Sony might have recouped on brand-loyalty alone BUT now their combination of pricing and misinformation is alienating some of their own user-base. That's what I mean (and a lot of other cats on this thread) when I say "it doesn't look too good for Sony". My choices are made on more than brand-loyalty: I'm also concerned with getting the best value for my hard-eanred cash.

I already own a 360 (premium bundle) and plan on buying a Wii at launch. As for the PS3's launch woes, I can't say I'm shocked by this. Way back just after last year's E3, one of the major gaming magazines (probably EGM but possibly Game Informer, can't remember for sure) ran an article about the potential difficulties of both producing the Cell hardware and programming for it. At least on the first half, I'd say it was prophetic. Considering that Sony has yet to show anything that's running on confirmed hardware and significantly exceeds the games out already for the 360, I'm starting to wonder about the second half as well. I'm taking a wait and see approach to the PS3. If it succeeds, I'll buy one once the price drops at least $200 for the 'premium'. Don't bother pointing out that all I'm missing that can't be recovered by peripherals if I buy the 'core' system (to use MS's terms) is HDMI. I have a 1080p HDTV with dual HDMI inputs. Component cables work just fine, but I'm not going to buy a gimp version, period. What if Sony had a party, and no one came? While I don't think that will happen, I doubt that Sony will enjoy the massive market share dominance that they have had for the previous two generations. Pretty much all the third party developers are nervous about the PS3's price point as well. Look for more multiplatform games. Some may bolt entirely to other consoles. Sony has fumbled for sure, but we'll have to wait and see if they drop the ball for Microsoft or Nintendo to pick up.

think 360,Wii, and PS3 fans are taking it to seriously here, personally don't know if this post is dominated by Sony,Microsoft or Nintendo marketing people. Second, think that Microsoft are trapping Sony's people, they are making them play their own game, which they dominate,(Microsoft always bet on time factor ). Also what is the benefits of launching the console with/out specific advantages (Blu-Ray), but at high price? they know that not all of their fans will buy it at once, they will wait until prices come down a little, that way Microsoft and Nintendo will sell Maximum of their products, and they will have the time to develop/upgrade new ones and launch it at THAT time.
