COD4, Orange Box, BioShock, Rock Band D.I.C.E. up Interactive Achievement Awards

Activision's military shooter takes top prize, but 2K Games' undersea actioner, Valve's compilation, and MTV/Harmonix's rhythm game also get their props.

LAS VEGAS--What the Oscars and the Emmys are to film and television, the Interactive Achievement Awards wants to be to games. Its sponsor, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, not only takes its nomenclature cues from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, it also put on a glitzy affair for the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which unfolded Thursday night in the largest ballroom in the Red Rock Casino and Resort in Las Vegas.

After an extended red carpet ceremony, the awards began fashionably late, with a group of sharply attired executives and cramped reporters rubbing elbows in front of the awards hall. After the obligatory hobnobbing and posing for cameras, the nearly 1,000-strong crowd gradually seated themselves and awaited the entrance of emcee Jay Mohr, who hosted the event for the third year running.

Unlike past events, this year's awards tried to enforce a strict "business attire" dress code on its nearly all-male audience. As evidenced by the flood of denim entering the hall, the upscale fashion edict didn't take. However, the skewed gender ratio of the audience did not go unnoticed by Jay. "It's like a hooker's fantasy in here," he proclaimed after taking the stage after several false starts.

Mohr then delivered some impromptu statistical analysis: "So 38 percent of gamers are women and older and 20 percent are over 50....that means 10 percent of gamers are cougars! Or as I like to call then, MILFs--moms I'd like to frag."

Following a round of applause, Mohr entered into a less typically NC-17-rated monologue than usual. "We’re streaming live on the Web right now," he said referring to GameSpot's live webcast, "so keep the profanity to a minimum." He then jokingly challenged a certain game designer: "I'm talking to you, Jaffe!" Appearing later on in the broadcast, the infamously outspoken game developer did not disappoint, letting forth a B-52's worth of F-bombs just to make his point.

Mohr's opening monologue also obliquely--and explicitly--referenced Web animator Zero Punctuation's recent review of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The subtle cue was no accident. The critically acclaimed shooter from Activision and its Infinity Ward studio took home the evening's biggest prizes, including overall game of the year, console game of the year, action game of the year, and outstanding achievement in online game play.

Tying COD4 at the four-award mark was top-nominee-getter BioShock, which won outstanding achievement in sound design, outstanding achievement in original music composition, outstanding achievement in story development, and outstanding achievement in art direction. Another favorite, Harmonix and MTV Games' Electronic Arts-distributed rhythm game Rock Band, took home trophies for outstanding innovation in gaming, outstanding achievement in soundtrack, and family game of the year.

Another title scoring a trifecta wasn't exactly a newcomer. Valve Software's Orange Box, which compiles 2004's Half-Life 2 with its two episodic sequels, the online shooter Team Fortress, and the darkly comic puzzler Portal took computer game of the year, outstanding achievement in game play engineering, and outstanding character performance. Other notable winners of the evening include World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (massively multiplayer game of the year), Super Mario Galaxy (adventure game of the year), and Mass Effect (role-playing game of the year).

But perhaps the night's biggest winner was Ken Kutaragi, the former head of Sony Computer Entertainment and the so-called "Father of the PlayStation." Largely unseen since he retired from Sony last June, the executive looked relaxed, sporting a tailored leather jacket and semilong hair as he took the stage to receive a lifetime achievement honor. However, the once-famously-aloof executive delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his family, colleagues, and the industry for the chance to help turn games from a novelty activity into mainstream entertainment.

CoD4 is not better than Halo 3. Reason why I say that, is because there is no comparison. CoD4 is NOTHING like Halo 3, and Halo 3 is NOTHING like CoD4. The only similarity is they are both First-person Shooters. If anyone says CoD4 is better than Halo 3, or vice-versa, grow a brain. There is no comparison. Whatsoever. They are both great games, and are not comparable. Get over it. Besides, everyone knows the Halo franchise is the father of the shooters of today, if it weren't for Halo, we'd be stuck with "Goldeneye 007" controls. Don't get me wrong, Goldeneye was an amazing game, but thanks to the Halo franchise, shooters have taken a turn for the better. Quit your pointless fighting, these games are not comparaable.

Call of duty 4 better be the best fps I've ever played when I get it, cause with all this press it's getting, if it's not I'm gonna be really ticked. (Game of the year for me is still between Halo 3 and Bioshock).

I dont understand these award shows, where are the fighters at??? There were more then enough fighters in 2007 to have this award. They better have a fighting game award in 08 with Soul Calibur 4, Tekken 6, DBZ Burst Limit, Super Street Fighter II HD remix, and maybe Street Fighter IV and a new Mortal Kombat.

Can't say I'm thrilled with the results, though I suppose it makes no difference to me. I've always felt Call of Duty 4 was overrated, and this sort of reaffirmed it in my mind. My GOTY was The Orange Box, though frankly I would've been perfectly fine with seeing Bioshock win it too. They both had far superior single-player than Call of Duty 4 IMO, though that doesn't seem to be as important to people anymore...

These awards are allot worst then Gamespot's "Best of 2007" awards. They clearly don't understand what makes a game better than others, in my opinion (Motorstorm?). I'm glad I didn't stay up to watch this crap at 3:30.

Halo 3 is one of the 360's uber games. It comes out every few years, just like a major sporting event. Call Of Duty comes out every year. Halo's lasting appeal is much stronger than any of these games and therefore is more special. eg: Halo 2 , most played game Xbox live for over 2 years, even with the release of the Xbox 360 These awards suck and are very innacurate.

Halo 3 didn't win because COD4 was better period.... Anyway the rest of the awards seemed pretty fair as well. Would have liked to see Uncharted take an award but it was not be be. Well done on Bioshock for taking so many awards.

Wow, Halo 3 didn't get sh17! I guess Bungie is going to work their asses off on the next game. This year's awards seamed more repespectful and knowledgeable, then again, last year, there was really not much competition, GoW swept the whole thing. I can't believe they chose Motorstorm over FM2, PPGR4, and DiRT. What the H3|_|_?!

i cant believe C&C 3 took the strategy game of the year,it was just the same old gameplay with shiny new graphics, and few minor changes here and there,World in Conflict deserved that award,it really introduced a new way to playing RTS games, and made them alot more fast and fun. Also Motorstorm for racing game, seriously what are you guys thinking, and by nominating prostreet they lost all their credibilty if they even had some

It's sheer non-sense that CoD4 won Game of the Year. It's no different than CoD3 except with new weapons, and a fancy new multi-player. Failure in choice, I believe. Bioshock deserved this, not CoD4. Plus, I'd play Halo 3 before CoD4 any day of the week.

I'm sorry three awards disappointed me, two shocked me. Forza 2 should have won regardless of whether you like it or not and C&C3 should not have won either SupCom or WiC(preferably the later). Cod4 won GotY which didn't surprise me, but did disappoint me a little.

Motorstorm winning racing game of the year over Forza 2 was a joke. I mean come on seriously..how can a shallow game such as Motorstorm be better then arguably one of the greatest racing games ever made? Bogus. I was happy to see that CoD4 won game of the year over in my opinion a very overrated game in Bioshock.
