COD4, Orange Box, BioShock, Rock Band D.I.C.E. up Interactive Achievement Awards

Activision's military shooter takes top prize, but 2K Games' undersea actioner, Valve's compilation, and MTV/Harmonix's rhythm game also get their props.

LAS VEGAS--What the Oscars and the Emmys are to film and television, the Interactive Achievement Awards wants to be to games. Its sponsor, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, not only takes its nomenclature cues from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, it also put on a glitzy affair for the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which unfolded Thursday night in the largest ballroom in the Red Rock Casino and Resort in Las Vegas.

After an extended red carpet ceremony, the awards began fashionably late, with a group of sharply attired executives and cramped reporters rubbing elbows in front of the awards hall. After the obligatory hobnobbing and posing for cameras, the nearly 1,000-strong crowd gradually seated themselves and awaited the entrance of emcee Jay Mohr, who hosted the event for the third year running.

Unlike past events, this year's awards tried to enforce a strict "business attire" dress code on its nearly all-male audience. As evidenced by the flood of denim entering the hall, the upscale fashion edict didn't take. However, the skewed gender ratio of the audience did not go unnoticed by Jay. "It's like a hooker's fantasy in here," he proclaimed after taking the stage after several false starts.

Mohr then delivered some impromptu statistical analysis: "So 38 percent of gamers are women and older and 20 percent are over 50....that means 10 percent of gamers are cougars! Or as I like to call then, MILFs--moms I'd like to frag."

Following a round of applause, Mohr entered into a less typically NC-17-rated monologue than usual. "We’re streaming live on the Web right now," he said referring to GameSpot's live webcast, "so keep the profanity to a minimum." He then jokingly challenged a certain game designer: "I'm talking to you, Jaffe!" Appearing later on in the broadcast, the infamously outspoken game developer did not disappoint, letting forth a B-52's worth of F-bombs just to make his point.

Mohr's opening monologue also obliquely--and explicitly--referenced Web animator Zero Punctuation's recent review of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The subtle cue was no accident. The critically acclaimed shooter from Activision and its Infinity Ward studio took home the evening's biggest prizes, including overall game of the year, console game of the year, action game of the year, and outstanding achievement in online game play.

Tying COD4 at the four-award mark was top-nominee-getter BioShock, which won outstanding achievement in sound design, outstanding achievement in original music composition, outstanding achievement in story development, and outstanding achievement in art direction. Another favorite, Harmonix and MTV Games' Electronic Arts-distributed rhythm game Rock Band, took home trophies for outstanding innovation in gaming, outstanding achievement in soundtrack, and family game of the year.

Another title scoring a trifecta wasn't exactly a newcomer. Valve Software's Orange Box, which compiles 2004's Half-Life 2 with its two episodic sequels, the online shooter Team Fortress, and the darkly comic puzzler Portal took computer game of the year, outstanding achievement in game play engineering, and outstanding character performance. Other notable winners of the evening include World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (massively multiplayer game of the year), Super Mario Galaxy (adventure game of the year), and Mass Effect (role-playing game of the year).

But perhaps the night's biggest winner was Ken Kutaragi, the former head of Sony Computer Entertainment and the so-called "Father of the PlayStation." Largely unseen since he retired from Sony last June, the executive looked relaxed, sporting a tailored leather jacket and semilong hair as he took the stage to receive a lifetime achievement honor. However, the once-famously-aloof executive delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his family, colleagues, and the industry for the chance to help turn games from a novelty activity into mainstream entertainment.

There is something fishy about the winners here! The GOTY is Bioshock. They chose COD4 to appease both Sony and Microsoft marketing dollars. As well Motorstorm is not the best racing game Forza 2 is. The rest of the awards given out are pretty accurate though.

Ok CoD4 is good, but not that good! BioShock should have taken more awards from CoD4, Halo 3 should have been the Multiplayer game of the year, and Orange Box DOES NOT DESERVE to receive ANY nominations, Half-Life 2 came out in 2004, its not eligible, and if you try and argue Portal and that other stuff in there....THOSE ARE ADD ON/EXPANSIONS, they aren't full version games in a sense since they don't use their own design/engine and are just add on's to Half-Life 2. I love the Half-Life series, but people tossing them undeserved awards, is dispicable. The only thing they should be up for is Expansion or Add On of the year....same thing with Burning Crusade, its just an add-on!!!!

I agree with everything, but this one: Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play going 2 COD4 That should have been Halo 3's to win. Halo 3 brought the Forge, Theater, dual wave matchmaking algorithm...and that's not even taking into account the outstanding gameplay. COD4 did challenges (which was new) and perks (not new), but I don't think it was enough to win. Anyone who's played with Halo 3 knows what I'm talking about.

I think this might be the first GOTY award this game has actually recieved from anyone. (They have plenty of "best shooter" or "action" awards).

COD4 deserved the awards it got, it still amazes me when I play it. Halo 3 is notable for its absence, but I guess it's the video game equivalent of Pirates of the Caribbean: it attracts rabid mass appeal, but hardly a groundbreaking game. The success of Orange Box is a victory for intelligent gaming. Way to go Valve.

Mass Effect got hosed. I know that Bioshock is a great game but in won in categories it shouldn't have. Mass Effect had great acting and an awesome story. The only reason Bioshock won those awards because it couldn't win in the big categories so it received the lesser ones so it would be recognized still as a great achievement, which it is just not in those areas. It did have a pretty good story I just can't compare it to the scope and detail of Mass Effect.

In my opinion Halo3 is a bit overrated. I have played Halo2 and its just basically the same game. Yawn! I did enjoy bioshock, but was it really that good to be voted for all those awards? NO! I thought Drakes was far better, well nevermind.

i don't have much of a grudge with the winners. the only category I believe people got it wrong is in the Family GoTY. Rock Band is tight but it's more for teens and people under 45. Scene It, IMO, was the more definitive Family GoTY. I had my parents, grandparents and other older relatives play whenever we had cook-out's and get togethers at my parents house. The elder people probably wouldn't be able to keep rythm of RockBand or tire from the frenzied action; but they sure as hell love to press the buzzer.

"Zazalon Halo 3 is one of the 360's uber games. It comes out every few years, just like a major sporting event. Call Of Duty comes out every year. Halo's lasting appeal is much stronger than any of these games and therefore is more special. eg: Halo 2 , most played game Xbox live for over 2 years, even with the release of the Xbox 360 These awards suck and are very innacurate." While I do agree that these awards suck, I would have to disagree with you that Halo 3 should have stood out in these awards. It is my opinion that Halo is terribly overrated. Not a fact, just my opinion. That's why these award shows will always suck, because everyone always think there should be a different winner, lol.

Henry4: you are aware of how business works? The more money invested in the tech/story/music and development in general, the more money they need to earn from sales. The more money they need to earn from sales, the more marketing companies do to ensure that. So by your comment: what are you trying to say?

Call of duty 4 is great, i would choose it anytime over Halo. At the same time, i can't get over the lack of lobby in that game. You can't even join a friend's game unless he send you an invite (still a b*tch to join after he sent you the invite). I think cod4 is a lil overrated, but it's the best we got.

CoD4 really isn't anything all that special.I dunno why it get's such praise, it's just another CoD game.Eh, then again you chumps are probably too young to have played Raven Shield, a REAL modern combat shooter, so... The rest are great choices, Bioshock and SMG and Orange Box, TRULY innovative games. And thankfully Halo 3 was seen for the mediocre piece of crap that it is, so major props for that.

I love COD4 as much as the next person but come on, Halo 3 is still a way more balanced game. COD4 has to many online party system bugs and lag to make it worth repeat play.

Call me cynical but isn't Motorstorm a PS3 exclusive and there is a distinct lack of other PS3 games in the nominees compared to 360/PC titles. Clearly Forza 2 should have won it hands down. I wonder if Sony found a way to manipulate it somehow (especially as their man got the Lifetime award). Bet it was a tough call between Bioshock and CoD4 in most categories. Both blew me away this year to be honest. Mario Galaxy deserved its award.

people who voted/judged need to get their head out of there @$$3$. its an ovverrated rythm game, which consists of, basically a keyboard, and another "modern" wragame. thats sad, but bioshock got its deserved props almost. for INTERACTIVE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, you can see many awards went to bioshock, except overall game of the year. if youre puzzling over this, ill tell you why: MOST RECENTLY RELEASED! and yes halo3 has better online play/customization/community than cod4.

Looks like hype-cow of Halo just ran out of milk. Also the guy/gal calling Halo the father of shooters should get his head checked - or play some more shooters (starting with Wolfenstein3D and finishing with Crysis).

to zhivago_x you're right is either Quake or Doom those 2 started the FPS genre, not Halo. Halo is not the father of the FPS at all lol many and I mean many FPS games came before Halo did. granted, Halo controls well no doubt, but mouse and keyboard still better.although I admit that I like using a controller better.

OK, I think Rock Band is a great game and everything, but how does Guitar Hero + Karaoke Revolution + drums = innovative? Is it because no one's done drums before? Even though the core gameplay is basically just Guitar Hero? There's no kind of fun like a Rock Band Party, but just how does it beat out Portal, Mario Galaxy, and Bioshock for Outstanding Innovation? I also think Guitar Hero III has a better soundtrack but I suppose that's personal preference.

I have to disagree here,Bioshock should of won Game of the Year, that game is awesome. it has a great story, amazing atmosphere, is one of the most original games in a long time.don't get me wrong here,CoD4 is a great game as well.but the war theme is been play out so many times already ,theres nothing original about it anymore.still congratulations to CoD4 and Infinity Ward for the award though.

How can Halo 3 not win Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play? Everything about the game is multiplayer: you can watch a saved film with friends online, you can edit maps with your friends online and you can even play the single player campaign with 4 people online. I know it's "cool" to underrate Halo 3 as it is one of the biggest games ever released but I really think Bungie deserved that one award. The game has such a good sense of online community, which is what the 360 is all about.

The fact that Motorstorm won best racing game and Mass Effect wasn't even nominated for best original soundtrack....I think I've lost any respect I might have had for these awards.

This just reinforces the point. Call of Duty 4 was by far the best game of 2007. Cant wait for the new maps!

With the exception of best racing game, this isn't a bad awards list.
