Classic Star Wars PC Games X-Wing and TIE Fighter Coming to GOG

"About" 30 LucasArts games are headed to the digital games site.

Digital PC games distributor has been teasing that a new publisher was coming to the platform, with an announcement planned to be made tomorrow, October 28. Before that could happen, GOG forum members were able to identify not only the publisher--LucasArts--but a number of games that will be released on the site, forcing the official announcement to be made early.

Most notable among these games are Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: TIE Fighter. Released in 1993 and 1994, respectively, both are acclaimed space flight sims--we commemorated TIE Figher's 20-year anniversary in May--but they've become rare in the absence of recent re-releases. This GOG launch will resolve that issue, making sure both games are playable on modern hardware. To make things a bit sweeter, it's the Special Edition of both that are being released; these versions feature improved graphics and the games' respective expansion packs.

Sam & Max Hit the Road is also among the games releasing on GOG. Not to be mistaken with Telltale's recent episodic adventure games, Hit the Road is the original point-and-click Sam & Max game, having been released by LucasArts in 1993.

Whereas all three of those games are making their debuts on digital distribution services, GOG will also offer several games you can already download elsewhere--not that they're slouches themselves. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis are all headed to GOG.

GOG says the new partnership with Disney (the owner of Lucasfilm) will bring "about" 30 LucasArts games to the site. It didn't indicate which other games were part of the deal, but did say we can expect to see the rest in the months ahead.
