Captain Marvel Takes Inspiration From Terminator 2, According To MCU Boss

Of course, Captain Marvel is going to space.

While it's been known for quite a while that Captain Marvel would be set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is finally shedding some light on what that means for the movie--both in terms of plot and storytelling. As with Black Panther, it looks like Captain Marvel is looking to break the Marvel mold once again, though in a very different way.

Not only will it see the return of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be in a very different position that fans have seen him thus far. "We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world," Feige tells Entertainment Weekly in a wide-ranging interview. "You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, 'You're part of a big universe. You just don't know yet.' Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn't know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within [the] timing of the MCU."

While clearly, this movie comes at a time when SHIELD already knows about Captain America (Chris Evans), it sounds like the Avengers Initiative is still a ways off. Introducing Fury to the idea of superheroes should be interesting to watch unfold on-screen.

However, Feige also makes it sound like Captain Marvel is going to play with certain genre tropes, as well. "It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the '90s action film," he says. "We hadn't necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite '90s action films within Captain Marvel."

What does that mean, exactly? He continues, "Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements [of] Terminator 2. That's about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street-level car chases, and fun stuff like that." Of course, he also confirms that "much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would."

However this particular movie turns out, it feels like a real swing for the fences, where the MCU is concerned. Then again, in a world where Marvel Studios can make movies as varied as Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther, that might be exactly what it needs. Captain Marvel, which stars Brie Larson as the titular hero, arrived in theaters on March 6, 2019.
