Capcom Responds To Controversial Street Fighter 5 In-Game Ads

Ads are staying in Street Fighter V.

Street Fighter V recently released an update that introduces advertisements to the fighting game's loading screens, player models, and stages. While the advertisements can be toggled off, the introduction of ads in the first place went over just as well as you'd expect.

Now, Street Fighter executive producer Yoshinori Ono has responded. In a statement posted Sunday evening, Ono thanked fans for their feedback, adding that Capcom will continue to consider this feedback to think about how it may "improve" the sponsored content feature in the future. Advertisements in Street Fighter V seem like they are here to stay.

"We value and thank our community for providing feedback on the new sponsored content feature added to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition this week," Ono said. "We will continue collecting everyone's feedback to consider how we can improve this new feature for players in the future."

Advertisements came to Street Fighter V in an update released on December 11. Some people immediately criticised the move, and made silly mock-up images of new skins for brands like McDonald's and Mtn Dew. Right now, the ads in Street Fighter V are for things like the Capcom Pro Tour series and extra content sales for the game. Players who view the ads earn extra Fight Money (the game's currency) from Ranked and Casual matches, but the sponsored content, as Capcom calls it, can be toggled off for those who don't want to see it.

In other Street Fighter V news, Capcom just today launched a new character, Kage, and introduced a big new balance patch. You can learn more in GameSpot's coverage here.

It may take a while but our collective voices are being heard. The more we as gamers make our concerns vocal to developers the more likely they will have to make changes to their business models/practices in the future.

Even if this time it has little effect on Street Fighter 5 it may very well be something Capcom (as well as other developers.) reconsider in their future releases.

@videogameninja: Do you think the small amount of our voices on Capcom ads are being heard, or the millions of Fortnite gamers paying for microtranactions are being heard?

@videogameninja: The only real voice publishers hear is money. Resident Evil changed back to survival horror because Resi6 didn't recoup to costs of development. DmC was replaced back with actual DMC because it sold like garbage, and DMC4 was actually the series best selling game. Street Fighter V is also one of the worst selling SF games ever made.

They rarely care for voices over money, only state they do for better company image.

@Jinzo_111887: The thing its that the minority its the one that wants those services to be free, the rest have no problem.

@johnnyboy787: I have my doubts it's a minority. In fact, I find the timing of Steam going from 65 million to 125 million users to be very odd. It took 10 years to get 65 million, but not long after the PS4 launched, it jumped up significantly.

@Jinzo_111887: I dislike paying for PSN but sadly I'm weak and do so for certain games. Couldn't care for the terrible 'free' games service.

@Jinzo_111887: For me personally, its because PC games are now console games. No longer are they just keyboard and mouse and pc oriented games only. They have backwards compatibility so I can use my 360 controllers and fightsticks and even new system controllers like ps4 and xbone controllers. Its not just for free online but games are also cheaper and easier to obtain. Also I can play games I played on last gen and the gen before it on the SAME PC. And I dont have to buy a new one every 4-6 years. Just too many benefits to being on pc/steam than to be on console.

" We will continue collecting everyone's feedback to consider how we can improve this new feature for players in the future."

If you listened to everyone's feedback you'd know that the way to "improve" the feature is to remove it. Simple.

Players: Please remove the ads

Capcom: We have listened to your feedback! We shall keep the ads but...

I guess its not unexpected from a company which sold a game's ending as DLC once to consider adverts as a "new feature".

@lionheartssj1: Asura's Wrath! You had to buy the last episodes in a DLC pack, otherwise all you've got is a pretty mundane cliffhanger for the base game.

@koospetoors: Technically they did a similar thing with Operation Raccoon City. Main game you played as Umbrella operatives throughout the events of the RE games but all through the game you fought against BSAA or whoever the other faction was (I cant remember). There was another half of the game where you played as that other faction and they sold it as dlc. They tempted you buy giving you the first episode of it for free.

@Renunciation: The only way anyone might possibly want them is if the ads made it possible to play these games online without PS+, XBLG, and NSO to play online. Doubt Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft would let that happen, though.

@Jinzo_111887: It's already a thing for companies that want to wholly do the online thing themselves. Square runs their own online service for FFXIV and PS+ is not needed to play. You do pay a subscription to play FFXIV. Also these games supposedly do not require PS+ either. So really it's up to the developer/publisher.

@darkelf83: Yeah, but aren't those also free as in "not for sale"? That's the issue with the premium membership fee. From what I can tell, they won't let game companies sell those games without any online multiplayer functionality locked behind a premium membership.

Capcom have always been a the forefront of screwing their customer base over, because they know that you'll keep coming back whatever.

I look forward to sitting through a 4 minute commercial break before each round in Street Fighter 7.
