Capcom defends on-disc DLC - Report

Purported statement from publisher says there is "effectively no distinction" between on-disc DLC and downloaded add-ons save for delivery method.

Capcom has no problem with on-disc downloadable content, according to a company statement obtained by CinemaBlend.

What do you think about on-disc DLC?
What do you think about on-disc DLC?

A reader sent the site what it claims to be Capcom's response to a Better Business Bureau complaint lodged against the company in regard to Street Fighter X Tekken's on-disc DLC. In the statement, Capcom said the best way to go about offering add-on content is by including it on game discs.

"While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle," reads the statement. "There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being 'locked' behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism. We hope that this addresses [name withheld] concerns."

GameSpot has contacted Capcom for comment on the matter, but as of press time, the publisher had not responded.

On the eve of Street Fighter X Tekken's launch earlier this month, Capcom admitted that the 12 "downloadable" characters announced as PlayStation Vita exclusives were actually on the discs of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. These fighters will be sold for $20 (1,600 MS points) sometime after the PS Vita version launches this fall.

I chose not to purchase Street Fighter X Tekken specifically to speak with my wallet against this kind of behavior. Will I miss out? Meh, maybe for a bit, but there are plenty other great fighters out there that I gladly purchased the complete product at full price for. Am I a mere drop in a rushing river, my action most undoubtedly going unnoticed? Most likely, but that won't dissuade me from sticking with it. If a developer thinks that my $60 for services rendered isn't enough for the entirety of said service, then don't hide behind post-launch, on disc DLC. The difference between on-disc and digital DLC, is that with digital DLC, at the very least, the consumer has the illusion that the developer gave the core game their full attention, providing a top of the line experience, and then after feeling content, released the game and started to work on more content for the devoted gamers who chose to give them their business. DLC should be a reward, for both the gamers and devs, not a punishment for the former. "Well, if you don't like it, don't buy it." Like I said...I won't.

The point of DLC is for developer's to allow for mini-expansions that they develop after the game's release. It allows the developers to devote time and resources to adding more content to an already released game and still get paid for their work. Day one DLC is a scam the developers are using in order to try and combat the used game market. See, this way, if you buy your used copy of Street Fighter X Tekken for 15 bucks, you still have to give Capcom some money when you get home so you can get all the characters. The problem is that they are robbing the people who bought the game for full retail price. We pay full retail price for what should be all the content they had developer up until that point, but instead we get 95% of the content and have to pay extra if we want all the content. It is a scam, and I have stopped buying games that do this no matter how good they may be (looking at you Mass Effect 3).

You don't buy a car fitted with a radio, but one that you can't turn on or access without paying an additional fee. You don't buy a cheeseburger from McDonald's and only be able to eat the bun part of it. Why would you want to buy a physical disc at full price but be locked out of accessing portions of it without paying an additional fee? People complain about online passes, but imagine if you bought a brand new EA multiplayer game at full price, but STILL had to pay money for the online pass to access those modes. That is precisely what Capcom is doing here.

The motivation (or should i say defense?) for "some" developers to have day-1 DLC ready to download was that while the game content was "locked down" for rating purposes they could work on other stuff as DLC that would be ready in time. With the content clearly ready in time to make the disc and be included in the rating procedure this is just a dirty money grub

@Harker409 People feel ideas and things were pulled out of the game to sell it as DLC. People would just feel better in general if there was no DLC period that way they won't have to wonder whether or not they got the game or are being played as suckers.

With the Mass Effect 3 ending and Day 1 DLC (also in part on the disc), I think I am going to stop buying games until the GOTY versions or the bundled packs come out with everything already unlocked and ready to play. IF they say they will stop making games, fine. Others will rise up to fill the void in time. That is natures (and the capitalist) way.

And they are right, if only because one way or the other we gamers end up paying for content that should be included/unlocked from the start.

I honestly don't care if it's on the disc or it's downloadable. We pay for the right to use WTF Capcom says we do....it is their intellectual property.. NOT OURS. What is more amusing about this entire affair is that I guarantee %90 of the complainers and whiners will end up forking over the $$ for the disc-locked content anyhow. This will make all the cussing and complaining moot point in the end. The only way this is gonna change is a MASSIVE PSN wide boycott of the content and personally I don't see that happening..... so save your breaths and just suck it up or play a different game.

@RedHer0 - I disagree, I think it very much matters. If they have the resources to place this pathetic excuse for 'DLC' on the disc and then subsequently 'lock' it, then they most certainly have the resources to place it upon on-line vendors and distribute the way actual DLC is supposed to be.

Oh, what a cute explanation. Except, of course, for the fact that it completely misses the point. The point isn't whether you have the DLC on the disc or not. Having it on the disc is only more insulting, but they're right, there is no difference. The point is, if it's ready at a point that it can still go on the disc (that is, before certification on consoles), just include it in the damn game. Deliberately removing content from the game just to sell it for DLC is a SCAM. And yes, there is such a thing as planning DLC releases during development, but again, that's not the case here. As I said, Capcom's content is ready before the certification process starts, it was developed along with the game. That is not planning, that is saying "what can we remove from this finished game to rip costumers off?". An example of actually planned DLC: Borderlands. They already had in mind what the expansions would be, but they WEREN'T ready by the time the game was released. So they sold us the game, then went to work on the expansions, then sold us expansions. That's a legit business practice. People, if you want this trend to stop, just don't buy Capcom games. Simple as that.

there is a difference... if it is on the disk which you purchased then you should be able to access it on your own property! If you have to download it then fair enough!! Capcom have only done this to save themselves some cash mainly on PSN because developers have to pay Sony some money for (i think) every gigabyte downloaded. On-disk DLC is ridiculous... if it is on-disk, it is not DLC.

I wonder if Capcom realizes that defending this blatantly greedy practice is only creating more animosity towards them and causing more gamers to take their money elsewhere or result to pirating the content off the disk. F%$# you Capcom, you'll never get another cent out of me until you stop this legalized theft.

Capcom very much has a point here. Capcom is saying if the characters weren't on the disc, they still would have been finished before release. You still would be paying for content that was done prerelease, however putting them on the disc at least makes it easier distribution. It's the exact same thing either way, except on disc just makes it easier for everyone. We should still be mad with them that they willingly admit they sell finished material as extra, but if it's on disc or not doesn't matter.

There's technically no difference, but it still makes people angry that they already have the content in their hand but you just won't let them access it without paying up. It would seem the whole reason for having dlc is that either it won't fit on the disc, or more likely, is something new that wasn't available at shipping time.

It will soon become a trend delivering incomplete games and charging full price. As long as gamers are dumb enough to keep spending money, all the whining in the world won't change a thing. The day people stop supporting devs like Capcom and Bioware is the day when this nonsense will cease. Simple as that.

So basically, "We're going to rip you off either way, this way is just cheaper for us." I mean, I get what they're saying. Most DLC is planned in pre-production nowadays, so the content sitting locked on the disc really isn't much different from the content sitting locked on a server somewhere until a release date. Both are slimeball practices though, and people need to stop purchasing this content.

Yeah of course it doesn't bother them. They get to cut content from the game and sell it day 1 to make a profit. And the distinction between on disc DLC is that the content locked on the disc is already completed, whereas releasing at a later date means it was worked on after launch (unless they just cut the content and then held it for a month)

Crapcom, there IS a difference. On disk dlc means it was part of the original game, then monetized. Downloaded ones means that it either was made AFTER the game, or (if the publisher is greedy) that it was part of the game, cut off and THEN monetized. On disk is simply worse.
