The Call of Duty series is soaring right now, as Activision has announced that the series has climbed to around 90 million monthly players, while Modern Warfare 2/Warzone's microtransactions are putting up big numbers. Not only that, but Activision revealed how much money Call of Duty: Mobile has earned so far, and it's a lot. This information came out of Activision Blizzard's latest earnings briefing.

Call of Duty: Mobile saw engagement and net bookings remain "stable" year-over-year, Activision said. Lifetime spending on the game since it launched in October 2019 recently surpassed $3 billion. That is a massive number, but it's only about half of what Pokemon Go has earned during its lifetime. For what it's worth, Pokemon Go was on the market for several years before Call of Duty Mobile launched in 2019.

According to Sensor Tower, Call of Duty Mobile earned $1.5 billion by February 2022, a figure it has now officially doubled in the time since.

As for the console series, a new game is coming this fall to PC and console, and it is "proceeding well," Activision said. This is rumored to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, a game that could carry forward the Operators, weapons, and bundles from Modern Warfare II/Warzone.

Sales of Call of Duty games during the latest quarter "grew sharply," Activision said. Microtransactions are booming, too, as Activision said Modern Warfare II/Warzone Season 3 was the highest-grossing in-game season to date. In particular, Activision called out the new BlackCell DLC, which costs $30.

"Our teams are looking forward to releasing additional seasons of new content and ongoing community updates in the coming months," Activision said.

Out of Call of Duty's 90 million monthly players, "over half of all engagement" for the series is on mobile, Activision said. To that end, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is planned for release at some point in the future, and regional testing is underway right now. This will be the next big Call of Duty game for mobile, following Call of Duty: Mobile from Tencent's TiMi Studios. The new game, however, is developed internally by Activision's Solid State Studios.

In other news, Activision and Microsoft just extended their merger agreement by three months, giving the companies more time to clear the remaining hurdles and get the deal done.
