Though it wasn't supposed to be officially revealed until later tonight, the next Call of Duty game has been unmasked early. The official Web site of the game, subtitled Black Ops, went live this morning, revealing its launch date of November 9, 2010. The bare-bones site revealed no other details about the game, which is in development at internal studio Treyarch, developer of the 11-million-unit best-seller Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.
Call of Duty is gunning for early November...again.

[UPDATE] Activision has now officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops, which it says will "take players behind enemy lines in an entirely new chapter" of the first-person shooter series. The publisher confirmed that the game will have a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a co-op mode. It is unclear if the co-op mode will be for the entire campaign or will have a more limited scope as in Modern Warfare 2's Special Ops mode.

Today's revelation follows rumors that the next Call of Duty game would focus on either the Vietnam War or, as now appears more likely, various regional and guerrilla conflicts that broke out during the Cold War. Silicon Valley blog VentureBeat went so far in an article yesterday as to say that the game would be titled Call of Duty: Vietnam, which is now obviously not the case.

[UPDATE 2] UK retailer GAME has apparently confirmed the multinational Cold War setting in its product description for the game, which reads: "Call of Duty Black Ops is the next installment in the thrilling Call of Duty franchise. Packing an amazing single-player story that will see you fight across the globe in locations such as Cuba, Vietnam and the Arctic." Since Vince Zampella and Jason Ward's lawsuit against Activision said Infinity Ward had control of all Call of Duty games set after the Vietnam War, a Cold War setting is almost assured.

The Black Ops announcement is a positive piece of news for Activision's Call of Duty series, following weeks of negative press surrounding the franchise. Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has been at the center of Activision's problems, with more than 26 key staff members resigning and many joining the studio's fired cofounders Jason West and Vince Zampella at their new startup, Respawn Entertainment. On Tuesday, 38 former and current Infinity Ward employees sued Activision for $150 million to $625 million, claiming nonpayment of Modern Warfare 2 bonuses and royalties.

For a closer look at Treyarch's last game, Call of Duty: World at War, watch the video review below.

I was excited til I realized that treyarch is making this. World at War was Garbage except for nazi zombies. Treyarch doesn't have a clue what they are doing when it comes down to multiplayer games unlike infinity ward. Its real obvious if you look at which call of duty games were good and which weren't cod2, cod4, mw2 all infinity ward but cod3 and waw were treyarch and they blew, they blew hard so yeah not excited however before iget crap from everyone I really wont know ti li play it and get pissed off and throw my controller across the room :D

Okay, how is a game like this going to have any meaningful characters, if the game spans several conflicts? Hell, I even heard Black Ops will have the 1980 Iranian Embassy Hostage Crisis with British S.A.S. Really? How can you expect to have any central characters if you have a game that spans several conflicts over the course of like 30 years. Now the whole 80' Hostage thing isn't a sure fact, but if it is true, then this will be weird.

World at War was a piece of garbage, didn't deserve to be released at all, horrible. Not even close to Modern Warfare, if you believe that, kill yourself right now. Take a knife and stab your own face, because you deserve to die. I had more playing the first mission of Bad Company 2, then I did playing the entire campaign of WaW.

Can't wait for the Medal of Honor release...did I mention Dice is doing the multiplayer part?....Call of Duty is becoming the next sports type game...a new one every year...but it isn't even as good as getting the new madden because of roster updates.

No matter what any IW fanboy says Treyarch did a GREAT job with World at War. That game was great. They supported that game since release too with lots of DLC and the zombies. It's more violent than Modern Warfare and to me a better game. I'll be looking forward to their next COD game.

Call of Duty World at War was like the game that has touched me. Whether it be single player or multi player. Mostly because of zombies. I like their maps in multi player and Treyarch did a great job on most of them. To hear Treyarch coming out with another one with new weapons, better graphics and a completely new structure of the game. Cold War sounds very interesting to play. Can't wait for the zombies to continue, however calling the nazi zombies doesn't sound right during the cold war. And for those of you who are saying only a year?..., no it took them 2 years, because they start working on the next one as soon as World at War came out. And I'm one of those people where a new Call of Duty game every year works for me and gives me that "new" game feeling unlike Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk.

This should be a awesome game! Treyarch did a great job keeping World at War fresh by releasing new content every couple months. Hopefully they can get out a couple of DLC's before Activision kills this studio like they did IW.

WaW was amazing, but dated and underappreciated because of the WWII setting. But if you do compare it to MW2 though, it's significantly better (minus the flamethrower spammage). Treyarch did one hell of a job with World at War and I frankly can't wait for a Cold War game which I have been asking for, for quite some time now. People think IW got screwed over, but they were actually the money hungry thieves in the first place. Some people need to look into stories more, rather than just read the headline.

@IcyToasters yeah in my opinion that is too many too soon, it doesn't give enough time between games to get your full money's worth out of it, especially if your someone who likes to buy COD games right when they come out. Frankly the franchise is just becoming stale, it doesn't have heart anymore.

Say no to milkage. Help the video game industry improve by not buying this game. Take that money and buy a game that isn't an FPS. Expand your horizons and ours as well.

Too bad MW2 will be the last CoD game I ever buy. I've only been interested in the IW games anyway and they're no longer what they used to be. I'll be looking out for what Respawn Entertainment comes out with rather than waste my time with Activision shovelware. Pass

I wish people would stop Treyarch bashing because of COD3, they made World At War and it was awesome. Plus, they made COD3 in 8 months when most COD games take 2 years, and with 5 ports to boot. Plus they had COD3 out at PS3 launch which is pretty impressive since most developers were struggling trying to program for the Cell processor. Sure COD3 wasn't great but doing what they did for COD3 in 8 months, as well as making World At War (which again, was great) I think they've more than proven themselves to handle future COD games.

I wish thery would slow down making COD games. Everyone complains when Nintendo use mario, link and samus all the time, but COD is way more used and no one complains. I'm am still playin COD4 and even though i have rented 5,6...i have no intention on stopping from playing 4. They are only good for mindless killing. there is no replay in the single player and TDM is TDM, no matter what game ur playing.

I really hope there isn't much sneaking around, that gets way too boring too quickly, I have ot set of every alarm to keep myself interested. They should go and get some ideas from cod 2 and weave that in there. Doesn't have to be WWII but some of those missions were so freakin cool. For example Hill 400, the tank ones didn't involve ducking from rockets and slowly moving through forests like Cod 5, it was an all out drive like all hell over open desert under artillery fire. After you did all of that oyu had to hold it from god knows what, you were even allowed to mount an .88. This a really long post srry. So i'll just say you want something to throw at Treyarch play cod 2.

At emacdaddy08: You do realize that Treyarch is completely separate from Infinity Ward and make completely different CoD games, just because another one comes out nearly a year after another its not like there being pumped out on a production line they have their own developers and are most likely being created around the same time as one another.
