Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Not Having A Campaign Is Not A Big Problem, Boss Says

"We're telling stories differently this year."

Unlike pretty much all of the previous Call of Duty games, this year's Black Ops 4 from developer Treyarch will not have a single-player campaign, at least not in the traditional sense.

In place of a single-player campaign, the game will offer an assortment of solo missions that focus on Specialist characters. These missions will have a similar style of bombastic set-pieces that Call of Duty games are known for, and there will be story elements divulged in these missions. So in that sense, there will be something in Black Ops 4 for players looking for a campaign-style experience. But it's not the kind of campaign fans are accustomed to.

Now Playing: Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Takes A Gamble With A Nostalgic Mashup

We spoke to Call of Duty executive VP and GM Robert Kostich about this recently, and he told us that Black Ops 4 lacking a traditional campaign won't be much of a problem. Activision has more work to do in the messaging department to let fans know that Black Ops 4 lacking a campaign doesn't necessarily mean the game won't offer a solo experience and story beats.

"As we go forward [through the year], fans are going to learn a lot about the story that is embedded in this game," Kostich said. "Look, it's not a dedicated campaign like it was in the past. We're telling stories differently this year. We think our community is going to love this game from end to end, because it has so much to offer. The core focus of it, I don't think that's going to be a problem really. I think what our community is going to love at the end of the day comes down to the gameplay and the fun you have with it. And I think that's what this game is going to have in spades. This is a little different from what we've done in the past."

Black Ops 4's solo missions are set between the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3. A handful of previous Specialists return in this instalment, including Ruin, Firebreak, and Seraph, and Treyarch says they've been reimagined this time around. There are also a number of new Specialists in the game; so far, we've seen ones named Recon, Crash, and Torque.

In other news, Black Ops 4 has a battle royale mode called Blackout, while the Zombies mode looks bigger and better than ever. The package of course also includes head-to-head multiplayer--here's our latest preview. The PC edition will be available on Battle.net for the first time in franchise history. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 12.

I have not been able to enjoy a Call of Duty game since Modern Warfare 3. Once a game becomes a yearly or less release, the wow factor is spread thin and the game no longer has that new feeling to it. Every game just feels like a big expansion DLC pack, not a new game in the series. Call of Duty is so stale, "But the kids love it so why not milk the living **** out of their parents wallets?" says Activision.

Not to worry though as soon as it releases it will be at the top of every chart, and will break sales records, get ready for a single player-less future

it's always a good idea to shake things up a bit. definitely if you followed the same trend for 20 games. Dark Souls 2 did it and it did a lot of good for the series trying out new stuff, also helping to make Dark Souls 3 a better game.

so, off the old ways!

Here's a choice quote:

https://kotaku.com/5912984/why-call-of-duty-still-has-single-player-campaigns

"We want to create a campaign," Treyarch studio chief Mark Lamia said. "We have a whole team that's focused on creating the campaign. It's what we do. It's what we want to create. We want to create a campaign, multiplayer and zombies."

Guess Activision tells them what they want to do now. Nice to know they have no creative freedom whatsoever.

Another funny article in retrospect:

https://www.nowgamer.com/why-call-of-duty-will-never-be-multiplayer-only/

No one could conceive of how pathetic Activision would get.

There will be thousands of uninformed people buying this game for the single player campaign, only to discover there isn't one.

Can't imagine anyone responsible would outright admit that these clowns squandered their 3 year development cycle meant for better campaigns on just more online maps. But they did spend their time wisely trying to spin this positively. It's like Fox News watching/reading these guys squirm about this topic.

Less is more! Up is down! Black is white! You're going to love that it's not what you want!

They're going in the totally wrong direction, and it's because they can widen that profit margin if they don't bother putting together a story, hiring as many actors (especially high-end ones) and having to bother creating a cohesive visual experience generating good maps with major set-pieces involved.

COD fans are just blind as hell. They think its going to be so good but it's not. I do not care about MP at all. I only play COD for single player. The excuse for it is so BS. Why not have both but no they want to less work and still charging 60 bucks. You know there are going to be loot boxes and a pay to win model. This isn't innovation. It's just a copy and paste of Fortnite and PUBG. 1 of them is free so wtf are they even thinking.

Its all about the money.

When you ditch the campaign you save on:

1: Voice Acting, Story board and writers
2: lots of map generating and..
3: directors and other supervising staff.

In other words, keep staff at a minimum..

With multiplayer only, Activision can:

1: Cram it with lootboxe$
2: Put little effort in making maps, weapons and characters and...
3:Release a COD game 2 times a year instead of just 1.

= Win Win $$$ Profit.

So to charge full price for this garbage is greedy.

1: Make a game with little staff and effort
2: Charge a game full price
3: ???
4: Profit

It's not a problem. The problem is making basically an expansion to BO3, stripping its parts, and still charging full price for it..

And it arrives.....the day COD went map pack only for £50 and upwards.

Im not saying it isn;t a smart move it may be, let the fans have their say when it arrives and see if treyarch learn from any feedback.

I totally understand this from a developers point of view. Single player costs far more to produce and is usually a small amount of the time players spend playing in total....BUT-

Black Ops is known for its great stories. Calling it Black Ops 4 while having no campaign screams cynical misdirect. Its like they are hoping a bunch of casuals without all the information buy the game expecting another single player experience in line with past installments....then get over their anger by playing the new Battle Royale mode.

There is still a measurable percentage of CoD fans (myself and my brother included) who bought CoD mainly for the campaign and have fallen off the multiplayer in the past few years. We knew even if we werent that into MP, there was still something worth having with the package....something we would often go back to months later for another play through. We wont be buying the game this year.

Im sure BMOC guy Kostich thinks he will make up for those like us with millions of new battle royale fans....but i dont see it.

Its a huge gamble, and for whatever reason, CoD execs think its a good one. I guess we will see.

Although, if they think the battle royale mode will keep CoD relevant longer, and thus able to sell more microtransactions, even if its to a smaller player base....thats a deal with the devil that will end up turning you into EA, as the hunt for every nickel overrides whats best for the game. Ask Battlefront 2.

If a lot of people who still bought CoD every year, almost out of a habit or tradition, are broken of that by these decisions, dont expect to ever get them back. It could legitimately cause the beginning of the end of CoD yearly dominance of the sales charts.

Mark it on your calendar- 2018 - the end of an era?

1. I'm bummed that there's no campaign, I actually enjoy the stories and big set piece moments in the past campaigns like modern warfare 1-3 and ghosts and black ops 1-2.

2. That being said, if it turns out that there are big epic set piece moments in these small character driven missions, and if there is a mission per character, and if there are lots of characters, then it could add up to a similar amount of content as a campaign, without the coherent story. I know that's a lot of ifs but if it were true, it could be decent.

Sidenote: I don't buy Cod every year, haven't bought one for several years. Just playing devil's advocate

People saying this is less effort and game for the same money, you're crazy. They are taking the money th why would put on the single player and making a more robust multiplayer that is probably going to offer more on day one than any other CoD game launch. I rarely buy CoD games but this looks like a step in the right direction for treyarch and the series. Release a campaign when your heart is in it and you got something to say, a story to tell, not just because it's become the norm.

The boss clearly is a complete idiot to say that. Today's day and age a game without a campaign mode is not a game. Even worst they gonna charge you a full price for the freaking game. I don't even play co up with this games and i'm always looking for the campaign mode and this one is not gonna have one. The boss don't care that he's loosing my money because there will still be millions of idiots all over the world that don't care and will still buy it without any care in the world.

I love how they say it isn't a problem like they're speaking for the playerbase. I guess they were also speaking for the playerbase when they decided to make another futuristic cod even though everybody wanted a modern day game. They don't listen to the people who buy their games and they never will. Anybody with eyes can tell that BO4 is nothing more than a reskin of BO3 without the jetpacks. It literally looks like they only worked on it for a year and just recycled everything out of their last game. That franchise is so pathetic now.
