Burnout Paradise Remastered Is Significantly Improved Over The Original PC Version

It's been given a new coat of paint to play nicer with high-powered systems and high-resolution displays.

Burnout Paradise Remastered launches soon, and it'll give players access to a much better-looking version of the beloved racing game from Criterion. However, it was uncertain if the remaster really would deliver substantial improvements over the original PC version. According to analysis carried out by Digital Foundary, PC players have something to look forward to in the remaster.

Digital Foundry looked at Burnout Paradise Remastered and compared it to the best version of the original release: the PC version. This original release had some graphical hitches and issues, even though modern systems can comfortably max it out at high resolutions. The analysis discovered that the remaster fixes these problems, especially regarding ambient occlusion, and it significantly improves all-around visual fidelity. For example, the game will be able to run at much higher native resolution across all systems, and the remaster's developer, Stellar Entertainment, has remade certain textures in higher resolutions.

Now Playing: Amazing Jumps, Crazy Crashes, Stunts and More In Burnout Paradise Remastered

There are also a number of more subtle changes that enhance the overall graphical quality. Collisions between vehicles throw off more sparks; doing donuts produces a lot more smoke; and shadow map quality has been improved.

Digital Foundry does point out a few places of disappointing visual quality, including the full-motion video sequences and the fact that motion blur has been completely removed. However, overall Digital Foundry concludes that the remaster is much improved over the original.

"The verdict is that Stellar Entertainment's remastering work is exactly that--an honouring of the style and spirit of the original game," Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan wrote. "It refreshes the content for the current-gen machines, and the displays they are typically hooked up to. Nothing sticks out and everything is authentic to the original vision--in effect, the developer has delivered the Burnout Paradise experience you always thought you had in the first place, even though head-to-head comparisons reveal anything but."

Digital Foundry has a lot more in its full analysis, which you can read here. Burnout Paradise Remastered launches Friday, March 16 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you're an EA Access member, you can play 10 hours of the full game right now on Xbox One as a free trial. You can buy the game for $40 / £35 / AU $48.

Unless you're going to zoom in on pixels in telephone poles, it's the same shit. I appreciate Digital Foundry and what they do, but most people in reality won't notice 98% of what they go over after 15 minutes of playing any game.

I loved the original, and I've been playing it again via BC (mostly DLC), so this is a day 1 buy (again) for me. I look forward to doing the whole thing over again from the first race to the last -- it'll just be spread out over months due to scheduling now. ;)

Hopefully they're seeing the Criterion BU with the funds from this, for dev of a new entry.

criterion took the game mechanic to most wanted and other nfs games like smashing boards, jumps, even nudging other cars into walls.

Not that this isn't great, i still own and haven't finished the original, this is another game with similar traits as the rest (all be it one of the originals to use them). Even ridge racer did on last gen !!!

Iconic maybe on release but now done to death imo.

To be honest i got bored 1st time round, the open sandbox approach different from previous burnout titles kinda lost its "urgency" or excitement appeal to me., but i totally understand why they changed it to that style.

Gamespot in 2018, not ONE mention of the Xbox One X version running native 4K 60FPS, Digital Foundry uncertain about Ps4 Pro hitting native 4K

Gamespot in 2015 : Every single game on og Xbox One runs in 900p and PS4 Godstation 1080p

@wayneextremity: They seem to be concentrating on the improved assets across the board rather than individual differences. As the Pro version hasn't been tested yet they can't say what it does or doesn't do. The original game ran at 60fps on both 360/ps3 so it's a given that its 60fps now I guess.

I own the original PC Version on Origin, but sadly never got a chance to really play it since it would always crash after the intro. I wonder if owners of the original PC Version will receive a key for the new version as compensation like Codemasters did when they released DIRT 3 Complete Edition on Steam?

@SoNin360: There kind of is for some people. Not sure about console versions of the game but the PC version of the Ultimate Edition doesn't even give you all the content when you buy it. You know. The version that promises you all the DLC for the game, and there was a SHIT TON of good DLC for this game. They shut down the store long, long ago (it wasn't even up for that long it seems like) to this game so there hasn't been any access to it for for nearly 7 or 8 years now. So... I'm going to buy it so I can experience it all again and the DLC I never got to try. Also because I get the feeling this is the last chance for Burnout to potentially get a sequel or remaster/remake of 3 or Revenge in the very least. EA fucking loves taking companies then killing them the moment a game doesn't meet their stupid ass expectations after all.

It looks like they (barely) up-resed some textures and threw a Reshade on to change the lighting and some post-processing effects. Not impressed, to be honest.

If I am going to buy this again (for $40...), I'm going to need more than some more particle effects...

@The_Stand_In: Road surface textures look much better and these are probably what your going to spend a lot of time looking at. Shadows are much better too (no more obvious change from low blocky shadows snapping to high res ones when you get close). I wasn't blown away by the game first time around so I wont be getting the remaster either.

@aross2004: Better than original PC version. Will have to see what DF say about the PC remaster edition. Should run pretty well at 4k on my gtx 1070. . . but I doubt I'll be getting unless it appears very cheap in a sale.
