Bungie Addresses Destiny Microtransaction Concerns

"We aren't (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver."

Destiny's new microtransactions are currently limited to emotes only. Though Bungie may one day expand the offerings, don't expect to be able to buy items that buff drop rates for the new King's Fall raid.

Writing on Twitter, The Taken King creative director Luke Smith said, "We aren't (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver."

His comments come after players discovered (via IGN) new items in the raid, such as buffs for armor and weapon drops, well as one that lets you acquire additional Moldering Shards. Some thought Bungie might sell these items for Destiny's new in-game currency, Silver. But that's not going to be the case.

Some have also wondered if Bungie might sell level-boosters, like the one that comes with The Taken King, for Silver. Smith did not respond to this specific item. It wouldn't be uncharted territory for an Activision game, however, as World of Warcraft also sell level boosts.

Destiny's microtransactions arrived on Tuesday through the game's major update, which also made a number of other tweaks, refinements, and adjustments. For more on Destiny's new in-game store, check out GameSpot's breakdown of all the emotes available in the store and what they cost. You can also watch the video above to get a closer look at the motes, including one based on "the Carlton" from Fresh Prince.

People buying into this just shows Bungie that they can go freemium and no one playing will care when they're stripped of content they have to pay for. Next it will be weapon/armor skins, before you know it, it'll be engrams, mats and exclusive store only equipment and Destiny players will support this.. lol

I for one cannot wait for Halo 5 to come out so I can retire this joke of a game.

@davillain-: Why wait for Halo 5? Destiny isn't the greatest game that's ever been released up until this point in time. There's plenty of other games you can play instead of Destiny.

@davillain-: Theres one thing that you can easily predict, and that is that greedy companies like Activision will do anything they think will generate more money. Whether or not Bungie is caught in the middle I do not know. But as long as Activision runs this show, the future you describe is more than likely.

@davillain-: Your argument relies entirely on a logical fallacy and your apparent ability to predict the future. And you can't stop playing Destiny until Halo 5 comes out? Do you not have free will?

I think it's unnecessary for both destiny's and halo 5's microtransactions.

@lrdfancypants: Totally agree. Microtranscation will try to stimulate the Human brain into spending money meaning taking the easy way out then earning them in the main game itself.

I won't buy them on either but I don't know how it's changed in the future because many will.

People will defend them on whatever their favorite title is as the good kind of microtransactions.

@repetitively: That's true. Assurances they wont abuse microtransactions in one specific way doesn't really make me feel a lot better about them. But lets not blame Destiny for sins it hasn't committed yet.

@repetitively: dude they wont, it simply wont happen. it would not only kill the game in its tracks but kill any chance of a squeal. its not a manner of knowing what there going to do, its a manner of common sense.

@neowarrior793: It wouldn't necessarily kill the sequel. If anything, it's preparing the gamers for what's to come. Stranger things have happened. If WoW can introduce a paid option to go straight to level cap, microtransactions that affect gameplay performance in Destiny are definitely possible. It'll probably start as a Destiny 2 pre-order bonus, but then will be offered via microtransactions later. You're quite naive if you think that "it simply won't happen".

@93ChevyNut: yea wow implimented that 10 years later because they knew people wold be flat-out bored if they tried to level to 90, it also just not going to happen, bungie knows this game has a bad wrap they know full well people would stop playing if they implemented anything like that. it would be the death of the game, right now bungies trying to get people to play not turn them away.

Micro transactions in a game that is already really limited on content is a kick in the teeth to its hardcore players. It's just greedy

@xzerocarnagex: You'd think, right? Also, you'd have thought a fully funded live team would be part of the plan from the start for a game like Destiny, but given the weird state Destiny launched in, who knows what the plan was. But we've got a measuring stick in the form of the Year One events to compare with whatever the live team does going forward. Hopefully it'll be more and better.

There's also the fact that Destiny is supposed to be a decade long thing, so if they over do it with the micro transactions and turn everybody off, they've got time to take them back out again. For all the hate they get for this game, Bungie/Activision have shown they willing to rework stuff when the community doesn't like it.

@virtuasega: remember when Destiny had content? oh no, you gotta buy a bunch of 1-3 hour piece DLC packs. Vanilla WoW had more content than Destiny does today, but good try dude. Rather pay a monthly sub for a quality game rather than get milked for any little bit of content.; oh and btw, ive been spending gold on my "monthly" sub since the WoW tokens came out. so, yeah.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah for those of us that paid $60 for the game and another $40 for the taken king plus the other two $15 DLC packs, it's kind of a slap in the face to get denied more content.

@neowarrior793: think of the bigger picture though. First it's silly dance moves no one cares about then it'll be things like shaders, that people do care about. All I'm saying a game that is very bare bones especially for the money their charging. It just seems greedy

@sammysc89: the problem with that is there is no "bigger picture" your simply making a picture and trying to persuade people that, that is the outcome. why not stop thinking about making imaginary pictures and wait till it becomes the actual bigger picture then say its problems.

@neowarrior793: I'm not trying to persuade anyone. It's an opinion. I personally hate micro transactions. I never buy them. Your telling me that activision has made a loss on destiny so it needs micro transactions to keep going? Hell no. They've made a fortune and will continue too. I bought the special edition for £75 when it came out. Then they bring out this new DLC with the old one bundled in with the game for £45. It's a rip off.

@sammysc89: non of that contributes to the point, you simply made something up because of your hate of micro transactions. thats the blunt truth, why do that when there simply no need for it. do you not walk down a street because you think your going to get mugged because some guys wearing a hoodie? no you dont, that would be ridicules, this is the same mentality, you saw something utterly minute and started screaming and shouting like its the end of the world with no logical bases. if you want to talk about micro transaction that aren't warranted, look at halo 5 thats going to be one of the biggest selling games they will make bucket-loads on game sales alone, they wont need micro transactions but its still going to be in it. micro transaction are in every game these days so that logic falls on its face fast.

@neowarrior793: I'm not shouting and screaming at all. My point is people who invested a load of money into the game already and being denied content. Even if they are silly things like dance moves. Micro transactions to me feel like a plague on video games. Not all games have them at all. Dlc can also feel like that, when it's £20 for some multi player maps. If the content is worth the money then it's ok. The fact is a lot of games companies now will plan the dlc before the game is released. And hold content back from the full game

@sammysc89: that a complete contradiction, you even confirm there silly dace movies. clearly you dont care for this content so why scream and shout about it like you are very clearly doing. your getting angry over something that you dont care about, i dont care about people who smoke they kill there own lungs but i would never start going up to people who smoke call them out in the middle of the street. just because your on the internet doesn't make it right to be like that either, no matter what micro transaction feel like to you it makes no sense to dis something in-which you dont even want the content for. is it so hard to ignore? can you not deny yourself from going onto an article to display your hate? now if this was actual content thats was impactfull to game-play i would be right with you because it would warrant the displeasure but not matter how you slice this you just posted empty opinions.
