Brink dev's Extraction changes its name back to Dirty Bomb

Splash Damage's free-to-play shooter will now go by the name it was originally announced with.

Jokingly stating that this is "almost definitely" the last time it does so, Nexon America has announced the name for Splash Damage's new free-to-play shooter has been changed again, this time going from Extraction to Dirty Bomb.

If the name sounds familiar, that's because it's the one the game used when it was first revealed. In a post on its blog, developer Splash Damage explains, "This not only better reflects its personality, but also ensures that we have a single, consistent name across the globe." It also signals the use of a new phrase--"Play Dirty"--that will be used to market the game.

In addition to announcing the name change, the game's website has been revamped, although it's still not home to much information about the PC-only shooter. What it does offer of note is the opportunity to sign up for the beta, which registrations are being taken for again. Registrations for it originally began last September, prior to the beta's launch in October.

Set in an abandoned London in the year 2020 following a disaster of some kind, private military companies now do battle over valuables that have been left behind. The game promises to have a wide variety of mercenaries--each with different weapons, abilities, and personalities--to play as, and claims it places a premium on teamwork.

The London-based Splash Damage has a history with online multiplayer shooters, having developed Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Brink. It also worked on the multiplayer components of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Doom 3 prior to announcing Dirty Bomb in 2012.

So the "disaster of some kind", it must be some kind of massive dirty bomb I guess?

These guys should've packed up shop after doing Batman: Arham Origins multiplayer. Really, how many chances as a developer you get before people realize you're just not that good?

"Ermagerd this is F2P this is going to fail!"

You lot sure seem to like Unreal Tournament, though...and that's already F2P in a sense.

"Ermagerd this game's made by the Brink guys, this is awful!"

Yeah, but they also made a couple Enemy Territory games, and did the multiplayer clients for a fair few id Software games. And as far as I remember, they worked well.

I'm staying on this train to see where it leads. If you want to jump off, be my guest.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah but as far as Unreal Tournament goes they're doing F2P right. From the sounds of things you'll have all the basic stuff unlocked, and the stuff they'll be charging for is mods.

It's not so much that free to play is bad, it's that the way a lot of devs use the system to screw the consumer over for every penny they've got that has given it a bad name. The concept isn't bad, it's just how most people use it with the primary intention of ripping suckers off that has most people feeling less than optimistic about the whole model. There are, at least from an ethical and consumer friendly standpoint, right and wrong ways of using it, and most use it the wrong way. Though given Unreal Tournament has quite the following behind it, we're hoping they'll rely on the community making mods and them taking a percentage of the earnings from those sales. That way if you don't want the mods you don't have to by them, because even then there's still a good fun game there that doesn't have everything locked off. It's a good way of doing things if you ask me (and I do believe rather similar to Team Fortress 2 in that sense).

This game is going to be F2P? Then it is doomed, since F2P shooters are lousy (Dust, Warface, etc). This game will go down the tubes faster than the "Dirty Bomb" I just flushed down the toilet.

At least if it was still called "Extraction" I wouldn't be so temped to make a toilet joke!

At least Brink had a style of it's own and tried a few things out, this looks generic and boring. Nobody needs another mediocre near future F2P Multiplayer Shooter.

What's in a name? Shakespeare gave that some serious thought when he made the dialogue for Romeo and Juliet. "That which we call an IP, by any other name would look as sweet".

<< LINK REMOVED >> Free to play isn't always bad. Gotham City Impostors is great!

That said, this will probably suck, not cause it's F2P, but because of the developer. I only played two games from Splash Damage; Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Brink, and both were god awful. Quake Wars couldn't even get things right like controls. Bought it for $10 during a Best Buy sale years ago, and traded it in to a local game store for $11, so I actually made a dollar.
