Borderlands 3 Release Date Leaked Before Reveal Event

Get ready for a billion guns this fall.

Borderlands 3 had weeks of build-up for a PAX East announcement that put a proverbial ring on it, officially announcing the anticipated loot-shooter. But while we did get a trailer showcasing the game, there weren't many other details shared beyond that, leaving us to wait for additional information to be shared later. Before that could happen, though, Gearbox accidentally slipped one of the most crucial bits of information: the game's release date.

The official Borderlands account tweeted (and subsequently deleted) word that the game is coming on September 13, and teased a Gold Weapon Skins Pack for pre-orders. The tweet is still visible through Archive.org, so we can say with certainty that it did exist at one point. Another tweet made a second mention of a Gold Weapons Skins pack, and yet another contained a video ad that showed the Epic Store logo. Both the release date and the Epic Store exclusivity turned out to be legitimate, and the latter led to a wave of review bombing.

Now Playing: Borderlands 3 Release Date Seemingly Leaked By Gearbox - GS News Update

Previously, publisher Take Two had hinted at a highly anticipated sequel to a 2K franchise would be launching this fiscal year, which would have placed it between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020. Additionally, Gearbox called 2019 the "Year of Borderlands," which implied a release this year. Other announcements from its PAX East panel included a Game of the Year edition of the original Borderlands, an Ultra HD Texture Pack for the Handsome Collection, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 on PC, and the DLC for Borderlands 2 coming to PlayStation VR.

For better or worse, the initial reveal trailer left us a bit underwhelmed, so the May 1 reveal will give Gearbox a chance to show off the game in detail. So far we only know what we could glean from the initial trailers, so check out everything we know and details of the new Vault Hunters.

There's going to be riots if it's an Epic Store exclusive. Mark my words.

Well Randy Pitchford's Twitter basically confirmed a 6 month exclusivity.

Cool, but they wouldn't withhold additional details for another day unless there was more to it than just an announcement date and storefront details, although I'm sure hoping there aren't any more details.

Not sure what to believe today. What with it being April Fools and all.

If this leak is genuine (which I can absolutely believe.) then this is yet another highly anticipated and longed for title that is going to fill an already jam packed year.

Gamers better start saving their pennies. Either that or pick up another job.

I don't get why companies would want to hurt their sales by selling on Epic only. Gotta be an April Fools joke right?

@Decoy77: Well with Borderlands it kinda makes sense. Borderlands 3 will be running on Unreal Engine 4. Which is Epics in-house game engine that they let other developers use. And if your game runs on an Unreal Engine variant, Epic gives you even MORE incentives to launch on Epic Store.

@Decoy77: I think Epic offers a revenue guarantee, right? Plus, they take a smaller cut.

And I imagine most publishers assume gamers wont be so crazy as to not buy a game they want just because it's on a different free store app than the several that are already in use.

Sept 13th is a Friday and certainly makes sense to get this out before the true holiday rush, and we'll know for sure by Wednesday.

It's unfortunate that some of the excitement will get marred by the inevitable backlash that the Epic Store (if it's exclusive) will bring from the community.

I called it that this and potentially RDR 2 would be Epic Games Store exclusives. Honestly Steam needs to stop sitting idly by on their profits and give a fairer cut to developers.
