Borderlands 3 Director Says More Characters Aren't Coming

Four Vault Hunters are enough.

Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel both added more playable characters post-launch, but don't expect the same from Borderlands 3. At a Q&A near the end of the Borderlands Show stream, game director Paul Sage ruled out the possibility and explained his reasoning.

According to Sage, Gearbox's data from previous expansions has shown that most people don't stick with additional characters, and so the decision was made to differentiate the four main characters through different kinds of builds.

Now Playing: Borderlands 3: Which Character Is The Right For Your Playstyle?

"Probably not. No," he answered in response to a question about additional characters. "You were asking me earlier about data that we use. And one of the things we actually saw was that once people have picked their character--not everybody, there are no 'everybodys,' but a lot of people--stick with that character and want to remain. Furthermore, in Borderlands 3, we really concentrated on diversity within the characters themselves and having a lot of different builds. So that was where we put our eggs, in the basket. Now some people might want more but I don't think that's the way to go, not for Borderlands 3."

He went on to say that in its data collection from previous games, they "might see people play five levels [with a DLC character] and then back to their main."

Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel both added two additional characters in addition to the four starting classes, for six total. Borderlands 3 again has four starting characters, but introduces active skills for each branch of the skill tree, each with their own modifications. This is likely what Sage was referring to as diversity within the existing characters. If you need a hand picking which one is best for you, refer to our Vault Hunter guide.

The Borderlands Show stream also detailed the Bloody Harvest DLC, a free piece of Halloween content coming in October. And the show also dropped a Shift Code, so be sure to visit our Shift Codes index to claim it and the rest of your Golden Keys.

Fl4k is the only character I like the look of so this is disappointing news if I get bored of him.

@krystal69: Did you even play the first game? BL1 only had the original 4. BL2 only had 2 DLC vault hunters... You sound like you have never played the games before. If DLC toons ruin the game for you then yeah, get out of here and go play Fortnite.

@krystal69: this is the first BL where I'm actively playing all four characters so I mean...opinions.

Makes sense, actually creating new content is effort. Modern gaming doesn't do effort, which is why microtransactions exist.

So wait, they are blaming players and not their horrible DLC character options? At least give us older characters like Zero to play as. If everyone stuck with a main, then carry over characters from BL1 and BL2... Why did I buy a season pass then? I thought it was supposed to be new levels and characters. Now I fear the new levels will be as short as the 'collect a fragment' missions that are only like 20 minutes long.

Gaige was my favourite character in BL2, And I only got into BL2VR after the recent release of all the dlc including Gaige.

I didn't feel any interest in the BL3 characters as they felt like BL2 wannabe characters so didn't bother buying the game, And it seems I won't be picking it up at a later date if they aren't gonna add extra characters.

Dunno what their data showed, but Krieg and Gaige are my 2nd and 3rd most played chars after Zer0, and I've played all 6 all the way through UVHM. The "play new char for 5 levels then back to main" bit sounds like it was just because those players were not done with their main yet when the new chars came out, so of course they switched back.

@DLuf: Data is key to information needed to figure out if resources should be emphasized heavly into certain aspects of the game. Look on the bright side, no resources being used to make characters MOST people generally dont play, the more spent on other aspects like events and such.

Well that's really disappointing. I beat BL2 on regular difficulty with EVERY character class, DLC included, true vault hunter with Gaige and Krieg, and ultimate vault hunter with Maya. Even though I found it too hard to beat the game on ultimate vault hunter with Gaige and Krieg solo, they were BY FAR my favorite character classes.

Well, that's pretty dumb. Looks like "data" has won again, so let's ignore all the fans asking for more characters to play. Well, it's their game and their profits anyway. Personally I don't see any dlc more worth spending money on than new playable classes. And I sure as hell don't play these games to only ever play one single class.

Maybe because in order to play as a new character, assuming you already played through Borderlands 2 and its DLC twice as your 'main' so that you could experience the game 'as it's meant to be played,' you would then have to go through a 3rd entire playthrough before you could experience it fully with a second character. I mean, if you play nothing other than Borderlands ever, I suppose that's okay. But it's asking a lot from players time-sink-wise over here in the real world. Phew. Okay, Borderlands True/Ultimate Vault Hunter vent done for the day. Sorry...

@howlingfantod: You only need to play through the game once with each character now though. TVHM seems purely optional now with Mayhem Mode and the ability to level to 50 in NVHM.

Eh? Gaige was really popular in Borderlands 2, and Double Jack was popular in TPS due to how crazy OP he was.

Ah, well. I don't really believe him anyway. DLC is practically more valuable than the core game and there is no way they're gonna let this potential obvious content slide.

@Barighm: I think it might be more about them running out of ideas or that it would require a lot more effort now that they've got these more complex skill trees with lots of different variations of each characters main ability. Or at least Amara has multiple variations for each skill tree. Don't know about the other characters. And with all the dialogue they've added, which is completely meaningless from what I've seen so far, it really sounds like they're just too lazy.

Actually Gaige was my favorite on Borderlands 2. Pretty sure that's not the real reason because I've heard nothing but love for the DLC characters. We may not play through all the characters, but having a nice selection helps us find what we want to play as.

@bloodmutt: Agreed. I may not have stuck with any of them for very long, but I still leveled all of them and I always intended to get back to them later...like before B3 released. I find it hard to believe so many people would buy characters and then not play them.

Also, it's Gearbox. They say stuff.

@Barighm: Lol yeah... They probably just don't want to do it or something along those lines. Would be nice if the changed their minds later on. I would love to see more characters. I guess I'll rock Moze for now.

I agree with him, I will never get around to all 4 of these, I’ll play through and keep playing with maybe 2. Same with games like diablo, I only ever had maybe 3 maxed out classes for D2 and D3. Same with destiny. I don’t want more characters, I always just wanted more content, or further abilities for the current classes or characters.

I really don't agree or believe there answer to this is true it all and some sort of fancy cop out answer. I know a'lot of people return to games because they release a new class . hell i return to BL 2 for both the mechromancer / and kreig . I got the mecromancer to max level and beat kreig 2 play throughs . also I return to Wow / Diablo and many other games when they add a new class. BL 3 dosn't need a new class anytime soon . and it's fine they aren't working on one right now and they may never . but don't give us some BS answer.

My favorite character in BL2 ended up being the Mechromancer (Gaige), and a very close second with the Commando (Axton). That makes my most played character a DLC one. I finished BL3 recently with Fl4k, he's fun. But I really miss Gaige (and Axton, too). I think it's a mistake to not include at least one new DLC character. It would also be an opportunity to create a back-story DLC for a new character including new maps in relation to his (or her) story.

If anything, DLCs could at least expand on the current characters' skill trees even more over time. I'm pretty sure they'll increase the Level Cap at some point and if they do they could easily implement entirely new skills in each one of the three skill trees for each characters. I only hope that the DLCs for BL3 won't be just generic additions like 1 new map and that's it. It has to be substantial.

@rekonym: Your idea sounds plausible. Instead of adding characters, they might just add new skill trees.

@rekonym: my favorite character is also gaige, I have mine at level 70 op8, my friend mains Krieg and although he has since stopped playing Borderlands 2 his Krieg is still level 70. He just cannot make it through the digistruct peak area to raise his characters level he doesn't even bother trying the other characters because he has gotten too used to Krieg.
