BioShock Movie Writer Is Excited To Dig Into "Great Big Sprawling Nightmare"

The writer of the upcoming BioShock movie for Netflix, Michael Green, has shed new light on how the project is coming together, saying he and the team are optimistic that it gets made. Speaking to Collider, Green said Netflix has been "amazing" despite the difficulty of getting started due to the Hollywood strikes.

"They were excited about it before the strike, they're excited about it now, post-strike. Yes, I got called, the, 'How's it coming along?' the minute the strike was over, 'You about ready…?' Been meeting regularly with [director] Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. We're all optimistic. We all love it," Green said.

Green described the world of BioShock as being a "great big sprawling nightmare."

The Hollywood writers in the WGA union have come to terms with movie and TV studios to end their strike. Actors in the SAG-AFTRA union are still on strike, though, and George Clooney is trying to do something about that.

A BioShock movie was planned many years ago from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, but its R-rating proved to be an issue. Now that it's being made for Netflix, Lawrence said there are "always discussions about rating and tone," but he is feeling free to execute on his own vision.

"I certainly have not felt stifled in any way, or sent in any directions with Netflix," he said, adding that the key creative team can basically do "what we want to do" with the movie.

In November 2022, Lawrence said there was a "real possibility" that BioShock would be his next movie, but nothing is certain yet. His latest film, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is coming out this November, and he's also lined up to make Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves. So it might be some time before the BioShock movie gets made, if it ever does.

A new BioShock game is currently in development at Cloud Chamber Studios, notably without the involvement of series creator Ken Levine.
