BioShock Infinite's religious themes led dev to consider quitting

Irrational Games developer so offended by scene in upcoming action game he wrote resignation letter (but did not quit); situation was a breakthrough for Ken Levine.

One Irrational Games developer was so offended by the religious themes of a certain scene in BioShock Infinite that he sought to quit the company immediately after completing his playthrough of the level.

No Caption Provided

"There was a scene in the game at the end where there's a gentleman here--one of our artists--who got to a point in the game, played it, turned off BioShock, opened up his computer, opened Microsoft Word, and wrote a resignation letter; it had offended him so much," Levine told GameSpot in a new video interview.

After it was brought to his attention, Levine spoke with this developer. His discussion with this "extremely religious guy" helped Levine better understand how to write the game's Comstock character, something he had struggled with for a long time.

"And I ended up having a conversation with him; my first impulse was I don't want this guy to go because he was a good guy and a talented guy," Levine said. "And we actually ended up having a long talk; he was an extremely religious guy and when we started talking, I realized that something I could connect to was a notion of forgiveness and what an important part that is of the New Testament and why Christ was such a revolutionary figure."

"I realized that something I could connect to was a notion of forgiveness and what an important part that is of the New Testament and why Christ was such a revolutionary figure."

"And thinking about how I would incorporate the power of that notion to Comstock into his world was, to me, the key. Because who hasn't done things that they don't want to be forgiven for?"

This developer did not end up quitting Irrational Games.

This was a breakthrough for Levine. He explained that writing Comstock, the religious, ultranationalist antagonist of BioShock Infinite, had been a long and difficult struggle due to his lack of personal religious knowledge.

"[Comstock] was one of the toughest characters for me to write because I don't have a religious background, let alone the darker side of his beliefs; the racist side of his beliefs. So I really had a lot of trouble writing him for a long time," Levine explained.

"And it occurred to me I had to figure out why do people follow him? That was the key to his character. Why do people follow him? What does he provide to them? And I struggled with that for a long time because obviously an ecstatic religious experience is something that a religious leader provides but I don't have a connection to as a writer," he added. "And it's always hard when you're trying to write something that you have never felt. And that would feel dishonest to me."

BioShock Infinite is due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on March 26. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

@Gravity_Slave @JunglemanchiId @AyatollaofRnR Haha, no he's not. I never intended to buy/support BioShat Infinite myself, something about that game just throws me off, and i'm really open minded about most games... I don't know if it's the fact that it just doesn't look good to me or the fact that something about it just doesn't appeal to me, i've just never felt such a dislike for a game until this one...

This might lead irrational games to have layoffs too... This seems to be the trend with games that bet the farm and fail to produce... Good thing 2K games has Rockstar in their pocket otherwise i think this game might usher in the layoffs again...

my question is, what ended up changing about the game to make the guy keep working there? because if nothing ended up happening then this article had no purpose to having been written.

So... How far along into production was the game before the major villain's story/character fleshed out?

@powerdesignkid SOunds like he's been the subject of many revisions and last minute rewrites. Because that always makes for the best characters, right?

Unless done in extreme distaste(just constant bashing for no artistic reasoning what so ever) if it fits the story i don't see the problem with it. If the story is a story about an obnoxious atheist, you're not exactly going to be respecting of any deity. However he learned from this experience, so i guess it's all copacetic.

Why do you guys hire someone to develop a character that has characteristics he can't relate to? Makes me think that the character develop is going to be poor. I'll wait for a significant price drop for this one after all.

@moncealyo ...You do realize that writers tend to have to develop and design characters that are impossible to relate to... Imagine the kind of person you'd have to be to really be able to relate to say, Andrew Ryan. This is a really ignorant statement to make -- stuff like this is the whole reason why writers do research and study history/lore before delving into a project. Even still, it is a difficult thing to do -- hell, even when you CAN relate to a character they can easily end up being poorly developed because you're so engrossed in your own stake in their ideals. Seriously, don't pretend like your limited knowledge of the writing process has anything to do with your desire to be a cheapskate.

@ViolentDjango @moncealyo there's something in everyone we can relate to. i would think that a character writer would have more tools to be able to relate with their creations more effectively, so if he can't relate at all, that wouldn't make for a very good character in my opinion.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that thinking a character is impossible to relate to is a bit absurd. you may not like the character or truly understand or justify his motives, but successful characters are ones you can find something with which to relate...

This is awesome news. I hope this offends the shit out of religious fundamentalists. Its been a while since we have had mainstream games approaching controversial topics, im hoping Bioshock serves as a scathing indictment of religeous doctrines and political structures.

@Prats1993 I think you will be disappointed. Since most christians even fundamentalists aren't extremists and thats what its tackling. It'll be controversial but far enough removed from everyday polotics that I doubt it will offend unless you are thin skinned.

@petez34 @flamingboard Eh, I think in order for interactive entertainment to evolve, we need to abandon the whole "games have to be fun" argument. I'd like to see a game test me to do things that make me question myself, who I am, in ways that may not be entirely comfortable or enjoyable.

I have no issues with religions; true religious people are rather rational and very selfless, and will go the extra extent that others may not; in helping people and voluntary work. Most charities are run by religious individuals. Having said this, there are the black sheeps of the community: pedophile priests in churches, Terrorists in mosques and extremist Jews in Cinegogs and Buddhist Monks that Ethnic cleanse rohingya Muslims in Burma and others as such that are too many to list. I feel that Levine did a right thing for trying to work things out with the developer, it shows that he wasn't of those who agree with individualisation and self determination, while when the time comes, they couldn't be more stereotypical. The developer should have been a little more tolerant and talkative over his religious issues, he should have also taken a deep breath and tried Yoga. Other religious people are very intolerant and emotional, they should be made aware that we are all individuals and will come to our own conclusions, even if that led us to the grave. The subject of God is very subjective and no one can approve or disapprove God. Regardless of what the general consensus is, 200 years ago, that consensus was "keeping slaves are a good thing", so much for consensus. For those who nonsensically talk about Charles Robert Darwin's "Theory" of Evolution, I Project a dilemma, How on earth did a theory ever pass of as a fact?! If we came from Primates, why didn't all primates become homosapians? Why just that lucky one? Why the need to evolve, while the un-evolved version still survived? Why have primates and gorillas since ever being recorded in journals and depictions or since records of gorillas began not changed at all? "There are 2 infinite things, Human Stupidity and stars" (Albert Eintein). Why did Darwin say in his book "Why if species have descended from other species by insensibly fine gradations do we not everywhere see innumerable transitional forms? Why is not all nature in confusion instead of the species being, as we see them, well defined?" "The theory that birds evolved from Quaderpeds will be the 20th century's worst disgrace in the field of Paleontology" (A. Feduccia) New scientist, 1 October 1997. p 28. To conclude, there is sufficient evidence to prove that there is much work needed in the theory of evolution, and that it is not as clear cut as some Agnostics, Atheists, Materialists would like to think. Think for yourself, don't let others make your decisions. "The Theory of Evolution is a racist, discriminatory outdated ideology that brings more harm than good" Harun Yahya. Do your research fellows. Just Google Harun Yahya I believe he is some sort of Evolutionist Scientist.

"How on earth did a theory ever pass of as a fact?"

Just because we still can not explain the mechanism of gravitydoesn't mean it doesn't exist. The same goes for evolution. While there seem to be many theories about the details of the inner workings of evolution it is a fact that it exists.

Any scientists among reading this may correct me if I'm wrong.

And yes, Darwin's theory was used to support a lot of pretty f*cked up ideas. But that doesn't mean that he was wrong. The same goes for Karl Marx, by the way.

But I guess in the end I wasted my time because you seem to be a creationist. And even if evolutionary theories might not be able to explain everything properly I'm okay with that. It's still better than the ridiculous story you find in the bible. I agree with you in one point: Scrutinizing ideas, no matter how established they are is a good trait. You win, even if you just end up agreeing with it, because now you've understood it. But I seriously doubt that you really confronted evolution as a phenomenon without any prejudice. You only read books that support your own view or you read meaning into what people say that really isn't there.

For example: Harun Yahya is an islamic outspoken creationist. That's what wikipedia says, at least. So please, do yourself a favor: if that subject is really important to you read something about this from someone who is not biased.

Not to offend or anything, but it doesn't seem you quite get the theory of evolution. We have common ancestors with gorillas, but it doesn't mean we came from the gorillas. Let's take two hypothetical different "tribes" of our ancestors and try to simplify. One of them leaves near fruit trees and have plenty of that to survive, no predators literally chasing your tail, and the need to be protected from the cold with hair. The other one, lives in a jungle where the tail was nothing more than something a predator could get, the climate was hotter, and fruits weren't as plenty so we needed to hunt for food. One of them evolved to grow hairier, an evolved tail for balance to get to higher trees and the ability to need only fruits to survive. the other one eventually lost it's tail (because the ones that had would die before they breed) his hair, and now need protein in its system instead of only fruits.

Of course this is an hypothetical situation, but just to exemplify how two species can coexist and have the same ancestor. The theory of evolution has some gaps, because we do not have 100% of evidence, but those are filled with predictions, and a great number of those predictions were found to be true, and most of the theory is pretty solid, those gaps are mostly details that are missing.

@matrixman2k A word on Darwins, evolution and primates: Nobody just looked at Darwin's theory and left it as is. It's now known that men are cousins of primates, we do not come from them. The two races come from a fish that split into two different genetic branches. The roots are similar, but not parented. Research is also being successfully done in tracing back the evolution of a chicken, resulting in primitive, fanged chicken embryos. Research in the theory also explains our lizard brain, our tailbone and our appendix. It also explains why we now face so many eyesight problems and other handicaps, because we have no excluded ourselves from the normal cycle of evolution through our way of life: the "weak" no longer die because they can't survive. There's something you have to understand about theories, they're not just hypotheses. A scientific theory is the explanation of a natural phenomenon through repeated and precise observations and facts. Theories change as more facts are discovered, obviously, but that's the point of it. So, I would tell you, practice what you preach and do your own bit of research.

@matrixman2k Nailed it.

As a christian who plays games, offensive themes are nothing new. Anyone who has played an RPG can tell you that most developers think Christians are sheep, and the shepherd of the flock can be easily swapped out for Mother Theresa, or any genocidal dictator. In real life, it doesn't work that way.

I think it's great that they discussed it as people, and not from some ideological corners or in an angry notepad letter. I also liked that Ken is smart enough to know the limitations of his own encounters with religion as a difference in perspective, without making it sound insincere (although I'm not sure the words 'extremely religious' was a great choice).

The concept that we could be wrong should never be ignored, but it shouldn't be assumed for others either. I look forward to being shaken next month to some degree, when this game hits shelves, because after all, I could be wrong... If someone finds a body in that grave, all bets are off.

Man what a world we live in today, had to rephrase this comment several times due to how I want to say this. Religion is a strange subject. Religion is one man's salvation and another man's burden or death. It gives a man strength and hope in bad and dangerous times, and it is the salvation for a human on their death bed. Again I had to redo sections of this to better say what I should say. A good story based on religion will be a good one. AAH, sheesh Ill stop right here!
