BioShock Hands-On

We take the PlayStation 3 version of 2K's acclaimed shooter for a test drive.

BioShock made some big waves when it was released for the Xbox 360 last year. The unique game wrapped a rich story with first-person shooter mechanics in a stunning art style that made for one of the most engrossing experiences seen on consoles in a long while. Thankfully, PlayStation 3 owners will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about with the upcoming conversion of the game for Sony's console. We've seen demos of the game in the past few months but only just had the chance to try the game ourselves courtesy of a recent visit from 2K.

Get ready for more creepy underwater fun with BioShock for PS3.
Get ready for more creepy underwater fun with BioShock for PS3.

2K has roped in a cavalcade of development teams to handle the conversion of the game for the PlayStation 3. 2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia, and Digital Extremes are tag teaming the project, which aims to come up with a faithful conversion of the original game. The teams are also including a few bells and whistles in the form of content, as well as visual tweaks. Fans of the original game will be familiar with the single-player Story mode, which follows the trials and tribulations of plane crash survivor who stumbles onto a mysterious underwater utopia called Rapture.

The PlayStation 3 game, as we've noted before, is on the right track to capture the look and feel of the Xbox 360 game. The visuals are comparable, although there are some subtle differences in color and texture. The controls map intuitively to the PlayStation 3 controller and feel a bit better. The PS3's D pad seems like a much better fit for the hacking minigame. The controller's rumble support also had a nice feel to it. Although the experience is pretty much the same in the single-player mode, we noticed subtle tweaks, such as manual cycling of the load screen stills. The game also incorporates all the downloadable content that's been available on the Xbox 360. In addition, the game features trophy support, some of which are the same achievements seen in the Xbox 360 game, while others are different.

Outside of the proper single-player experience, we had a chance to try the Survivor mode, which offers a greater level of challenge that forces you to be smarter about how you play the game. Enemy behavior has been tweaked, and the damage you cause has been modified, so you won't be sailing through the mode even if you're familiar with the original game. We also got a look at the other big addition to the game, the puzzle rooms, which are a very slick brain-busting addition to the main game. 2K reps noted that the rooms will vary in scope and size, which will affect how long it takes you to play through them. While some, such as the Ferris wheel, we've seen before and can be done in short order, others will require more work.

BioShock remains a must-play game for this generation, so if you haven't checked it out yet, the PlayStation 3 version of the game is one more chance for you to give it a try. The game is coming together really well. The faithful conversion of the main game is looking good and might even be sharper in places. The additional content, challenge rooms, modes, and trophies are nice extras to have, although we obviously would have liked to see more. BioShock for the PlayStation 3 is slated to ship this October, so look for more soon.

buying it. i have waited a long time. Both bioshock and mass effect tempted me but those are the only 360 games i wanted and now i have now. now only if the other came over (sequels will likely be multiplatform)

I find it disturbing that PS3 makes graphics all blurry when you "port" a game from 360. If this had been made for the ps3 from the start, or remade ground up ( not just the 360 engine with 360 textures on a PS3 ) the quality would probably be better. But for now, it's just a blurry version with new stuff added. My PS3 gets play with MGS4 and coming up Force Unleashed, but had Force Unleashed been made for 360 first, then ported to ps3, the quality would suffer too. Luckily, they were made side-by-side and are of the same quality. Bioshock, will be and always will be played on the PC and 360. The Ps3 just blurs the graphics too much for my enjoyment.

This game was fantastic on the 360. Looks like it'll be even greater when it comes out for the ps3 because it has everything the original had (including downloadable content) and more! It's times like these that I wish I had a ps3 :-(

Ra-Devil: I love your opinion. I hope this clears the console hating gong on all over the place. A balanced view from one who owns and plays both consoles.

I played it last year on the 360....hmmm I just might give it another play through. I loved killing Big Daddies. Trap Bolts are the best. But anyway, I am glad that other ps3 owners will get to play it. It seems they are putting a lot of time and energy into making a good port.

i'd like to know if this performs better than oblivion frames per second, load times etc. Also, think chronicles of riddick should come to ps3, maybe even a sequel as well.

At times the game was quite boring and I don't think the shooting mechanics are implemented well. I enjoyed the dialog as much as the next guy but the gunplay was not very satisfying. I quit after performing a few chores for "the artist". Picky FPS fans should check out a demo and not buy it blindly.

too many games for ps3 in october, not enough time to play or money to buy them. i'd rather play something new like far cry 2, force unleashed or one of the exclusives rather than something over a year old that most people have already completed.

My friend got it on PC a little while back, and had me play. I hate FPS games, but I LOVED this one. I could tell it was brilliantly put together. He told me it will be out for PS3, so I put the controller down and aved myself for this. After reading this article, I'm glad I did. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

@Ra-Devil Got a few points to make about your points... First of all, yes I own both. I have Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, and Tales of Vesperia for 360, along with some XBLA games. I enjoy playing 360. Let's make that clear. The first thing that jumped out at me was you said the 360 was "a console, with 4 controllers made just for it." Thats weird, you can use 8 controllers with PS3...(mind you I don't know of anyone who does, but still lol). Second, R&C: Size Matters was not released for PS3. It was a PSP game that got a PS2 port. The PS3 game is R&C Future: Tools of Destruction. Short load times? Thats the reason PS3 installs, to cut down on load times, which in MOST cases, it does. And hopefully nobody will think you are "mean" for saying nothing is coming out...but what about LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles, SOCOM: Confrontation? Would have been able to say Killzone 2, but stupid delays...anyway, and yes, I know about the 360 exclusives, I am picking up Gears 2 and Fable 2. I realize our taste of games may differ, but those are just a few I plan to get. BTW God of War 3 was revealed at E3, slated for a 2010 release right now. And Team ICO is rumored to have a project TBA in Tokyo next month. Anyway, not arguing, just clearing up some of your post.

Why can't people recognize that both consoles are great? Both systems have a bunch of great games out, and coming out soon. I own a 360, but i don't hate the PS3 at all. So just recognize that its a good thing that more people can play bioshock when it comes out on PS3. And btw shanzor, you missed left 4 dead :)

@briansevenfive I have no idea what you think you're talking about. The 360 only has Live and Gears? Are you serious? What about Mass Effect? What about Ninja Gaiden II? What about the upcoming games like Fable 2 and Banjo Kazooie? What about all the great downloadable games on Xbox Live like Braid, Castle Crashers, and Geomtery Wars? Seriously, you have no clue what you're talking about. Halo 3 wasn't a disappointment either. Maybe to you, but a lot of people still play it right now. It's just wrong to put a console down because of your opinion. These consoles are about even now so stop trying to put one down.

briansevenfive, Dude, really? I hate argueing, and really just wanna' tell you to shutup, but did you really just say that the online for Halo 3 "sucked balls?"... I don't even know how to take that. It's wrapped in so much ignorance... that's like saying "Resistance's online was aweful," when it clearly wasn't. There's no lag, getting into a game is easy, and when you're in that game, you're usually in with people about your skill range, what's more to ask for?? As far as whether PS3 or Xbox 360 is better, it's like argueing with a brick wall... there's nothing to argue about, and you can't ever win because of that. You'll never convince anyone anything, or prove your point, which is the point of an arguement. I hate the online, internet community, because you can't completely cloak their brains in pure logic after they say something as ignorant as, "PS3/360 is ownz!" PS3 is a much better console... hardware-wise. That's undeniable, I mean, Blu-ray, built in wireless, completely Blu-Tooth, multi-memory unit support? Yeah. 360 is gear much more towards gaming, and that's blatantly evident in it's design. It's a console, with up to 4 controllers made just for it, and a HDD that's completely optional, with memory units optional as well... yeah, it's not going to last as long as the PS3, nor is it as fancy, but M$ has done 2 things to keep it going. They've kept Xbox Live loaded with new content every single day, and they bring out great games every year, throughout the year. The only games that I've owned or played for a PS3 at this point are R&C: Size Matters, Resistance, Uncharted, and MGS 4. They're the only games I wanted to play, and I didn't even like R&C or Uncharted that much, but MGS 4 was a complete masterpiece... but it's not worth the $400 I had to pay. The 360 is usually where I go for games. Why? Short load times, Achievements (I know they're stupid, but they really do make you feel like you're doing something), and a slew of games I like playing. That "I" like playing. They arent' the best games even, "I" like playing them, don't misconstue that into "They're the best," they aren't, those days have gone and passed (we'll miss you 8/16-bit era). I have a total library of 32 360, and only 2 PS3 games. I've had the PS3 for a year less, and that's it. I could have 12 games for it, if I bought the cross-platform games for he PS3 instead, but I didn't. Installing games onto a console just feels really silly to me. It's like when load times first showed up... I remember thinking, "W-T-F IS THIS??" Nobody else seemed to notice. There were PS1 and Saturn games that didn't need to load, and other that needed 5 minutes. Now that load times are finally being cut down on... they make installations? And in MGS 4's case, ROLLING installations? No, let me install the whole thing. A single mission only takes about an hour, maybe an hour and a half (longer for those of you who don't like being seen). A mission from the first Halo game was about that long, and they didn't need to install? I don't want to be mean, or rude or anything, but, what's coming out for the PS3 this year other than Resistance 2? Cross-platformers aren't what I'm talking about, it's the first party support. I mean, I can think of at least 3 games right now that are exclusive to the 360 that I'm willing to buy and play coming out, and other 3rd party games for both consoles. I'm not looking to buy Blu-rays for my PS3, I'm looking to game on it, and I just seem to game far more on my 360, and I keep getting games for it, 3rd party or not. What came out last season for the PS3? I keep waiting for Sony to suddenly unveil their holiday season of games, and it be this cavalcade of great titles, like God of War III, Shadow of the Colossus 2(or whatever), plus a few more games. I haven't seen it yet, hell, MGS 4 didn't even come out in the Holiday season, which would have sent PS3 sales through the roof if it had. Sorry, but I feel like I get more bang for my buck with my Xbox. Sony's PS3 is a great piece of technology, but there's not much I play on it. If that somehow makes me a fanboy, even though I didn't claim console supremecy in any way (Wii sucks, yay!), then I'm a fanboy by your wierd definition...

Hooray for PS3 owners. Now you can add another game to that collection of 2 games. I would have so bought a PS3 if it wasn't for the fact that there are almost no games, so it's good to see the gaming-ness get spread around

I too played the PC version, and thought it was alright. I played it 3 different ways: Saving all the girls, Killing all the girls, and a combination of the two. Past that, the replay value is "meh", so I doubt I'll get it for PS3. Good game though.
