BioShock Hands-On

We take the PlayStation 3 version of 2K's acclaimed shooter for a test drive.

BioShock made some big waves when it was released for the Xbox 360 last year. The unique game wrapped a rich story with first-person shooter mechanics in a stunning art style that made for one of the most engrossing experiences seen on consoles in a long while. Thankfully, PlayStation 3 owners will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about with the upcoming conversion of the game for Sony's console. We've seen demos of the game in the past few months but only just had the chance to try the game ourselves courtesy of a recent visit from 2K.

Get ready for more creepy underwater fun with BioShock for PS3.
Get ready for more creepy underwater fun with BioShock for PS3.

2K has roped in a cavalcade of development teams to handle the conversion of the game for the PlayStation 3. 2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia, and Digital Extremes are tag teaming the project, which aims to come up with a faithful conversion of the original game. The teams are also including a few bells and whistles in the form of content, as well as visual tweaks. Fans of the original game will be familiar with the single-player Story mode, which follows the trials and tribulations of plane crash survivor who stumbles onto a mysterious underwater utopia called Rapture.

The PlayStation 3 game, as we've noted before, is on the right track to capture the look and feel of the Xbox 360 game. The visuals are comparable, although there are some subtle differences in color and texture. The controls map intuitively to the PlayStation 3 controller and feel a bit better. The PS3's D pad seems like a much better fit for the hacking minigame. The controller's rumble support also had a nice feel to it. Although the experience is pretty much the same in the single-player mode, we noticed subtle tweaks, such as manual cycling of the load screen stills. The game also incorporates all the downloadable content that's been available on the Xbox 360. In addition, the game features trophy support, some of which are the same achievements seen in the Xbox 360 game, while others are different.

Outside of the proper single-player experience, we had a chance to try the Survivor mode, which offers a greater level of challenge that forces you to be smarter about how you play the game. Enemy behavior has been tweaked, and the damage you cause has been modified, so you won't be sailing through the mode even if you're familiar with the original game. We also got a look at the other big addition to the game, the puzzle rooms, which are a very slick brain-busting addition to the main game. 2K reps noted that the rooms will vary in scope and size, which will affect how long it takes you to play through them. While some, such as the Ferris wheel, we've seen before and can be done in short order, others will require more work.

BioShock remains a must-play game for this generation, so if you haven't checked it out yet, the PlayStation 3 version of the game is one more chance for you to give it a try. The game is coming together really well. The faithful conversion of the main game is looking good and might even be sharper in places. The additional content, challenge rooms, modes, and trophies are nice extras to have, although we obviously would have liked to see more. BioShock for the PlayStation 3 is slated to ship this October, so look for more soon.

Pretty freaky, even for a game. Not the greatest visuals, but amazing art direction. Quests are kind of boring, but well worth playing despite the slow pace.

I wish there were more features added. But then again, I doubt many people who played the original will care to play this version, too, and I'm just glad that I'll finally get to try it. So I'm pretty excited.

Can't wait to play this version! I beat the 360 version twice and almost got every achievement, so I can't wait to get some trophies on PS3! Just hope this time after beating the game you can keep all of your power ups...

Why do they list trophies as an added extra??? Ridiculous gamespot just call them out when they dont add enough to a game, they always sugar coat everything

@ Ahson_Khan Yes but the Bioshock looks sorta crap on a computer with only the minimum. Sure its cheaper but unless you are intending on getting an upgrade around the same time of buying the game then it would be worth the extra money to get the better GFX on the ps3 (or 360).

I like how it's compared to the 360 version continuously, and not the superior to both, PC version. I've been messing with the thought of getting in PS3 just to experience it again, and on a much bigger tv. We'll see how my bank account looks toward the end of the month... Kind of a bummer that it's full price.

You guys are in for an EXPERIENCE!! I played this on the 360 last year and plan to get it for my PS3 too. I'm thrilled that all gamers can finally play this. It's that creepy. I hadn't been this freaked out since playing Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube at 2am. Cheers.

I'm pretty sure the gaming industry is wanitng me to lose weight. Really, my choices are: "Should i buy food or this game?" October is gonna be such a burden on my wallet. Bioshock, Midnight Club, Fallout, LBP, Dead Space, Motorstorm, and that's just October! Damn it feels good to be a gamer!

I think they're gonna put some more content out for 360 now, seeing as they left 150 achievement points open.

Had this already on the PC and it was one of the best games I've played - definately wouldn't mind getting it again for the PS3 just for it's extra content.

I have the PC version, but I wouldn't mind some extra bells and whistles, and maybe now I can play it at full speed, because my comp could barely run it.

I wish this wasn't coming out in the gaming release storm that starts in August/September and ends sometime after the new year. I really wanted to show my support twice for this game. It really is a lot of fun and well made. I am glad the PS3 owners now get to experience what the 360 owners did last year. Awesome game.

Bioshock cannot be compared to other typical FPS games, especially multiplayer ones like Team Fortress. As a single player experience, Bioshock is easily the best first person perspective game I've played. Like so many others have said, it incorporates so many different experiences other than shooting, that it cannot be compared to other games that have a first person viewpoint. Saturndust - you're totally right. Those that are just comparing it to their run of the mill FPS games are missing the point entirely...

BIOSHOCK IS NOT TO BE COMPARED WITH ORANGE BOX OR COD4, YES, THEY ARE FPS BUT NOT THE SAME KIND, THEY'RE NOT EVEN CLOSE, BIOSHOCK FOCUSES SO MUCH INTO A MIX AF FPS AND SURVIVAL HORROR (AND NOT SHOOTING EVERYTHING) SO STOP IT GUYS

Team Fortress is the best part of the orange box. Thats the best fps multiplayer experience Ive ever had, on the pc at least. In no way does Bioshock deserve all the praise it gets. Its an ok game not Game of the Year material.

The Orang Box and COD4 are a million times better. I dont own a PS3 but I found Bioshock to get boring fast. Its worth a rental. The first few hours youll be amazed with the atmosphere. I couldnt finish it.

One of my favorite games of 2007. As a PS3 owner I can't wait to get my new copy. Also, there are lots of great exclusives for PS3! MGS4, Warhawk, Resistance: Fall of Man, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III, Uncharted, etc.

@King_louis51 I hope you were kidding about Gears 3 coming to the PS3. Microsoft is willing to shell out almost any amount of money to keep Gears exclusive. Microsoft is actually trying to buy Epic Games.
