BioShock 2 multiplayer goes to Digital Extremes

2K Games tasks studio behind PS3 port of original underwater shooter with group-oriented prequel mode set during "the fall of Rapture."

Prior to BioShock 2's official reveal in October, speculation appeared to indicate that the 2K Games-published game would be a prequel to the first, detailing the fall of the idyllic underwater city of Rapture. However, as explained in GameSpot's first look at the first-person shooter, BioShock 2 is very much a sequel to the events in the first game, taking place 10 years after the conclusion of Jack's escapades with Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine and featuring big sisters.

A big sister in the wild.
A big sister in the wild.

Today, the source of that early speculation appears to have come to light. 2K Games has announced that BioShock 2 will indeed contain a multiplayer component, one that will be set "during the fall of Rapture." Digital Extremes, the studio behind 2008's long-in-the-making Dark Sector as well as the PlayStation 3 edition of BioShock, has been tasked with creating the BioShock 2 multiplayer component.

BioShock 2's multiplayer will tell a story of its own, positioning players in the role of a plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, "a premier provider of plasmids and tonics" that eventually turned the underwater city's denizens insane. 2K Games notes that the multiplayer component will continue to flesh out BioShock's backstory, providing a look at the corruption that led to Rapture's demise, as well as revisiting a number of locales from the first game.

2K Games didn't delve into specific game modes for the multiplayer component, and it didn't indicate whether it would focus on cooperative or competitive play. However, the publisher did note that an experience-point system will be at work, wherein players will be able to upgrade and unlock new weapons, plasmids, and tonics as they advance. 2K Games also promises that these abilities can be used to form "hundreds of different combinations."

BioShock 2 is expected to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I dunno, BioShock didn't really feel like multiplayer would work for it, but we'll see.

so glad Take Two didn't try and half-ass a prequel. The prequel should be its own game: BioShock3, and has the potential to be the best story of the 3. I still think that BioShock2 should have been a prequel to the first. Imagine playing as a citizen of Rapture as it starts to fall... awesome.

REA24409, both systems have plenty of exclusives and I'd say you shouldn't include unreleased exclusives in your list...

"Bioshock is not a multiplayer game." You're right, but Bioshock 2 is...some of the complaints on here are really pathetic. Has anyone ever forced you to play multiplayer? you don't have to. Plus, for those worried about "the multiplayer taking away from the single player experience" bullcrap, if you read the article you will see that a compeltely different team is working on the MP aspect of the game, meaning the people working on the SP aspect will only work on the SP aspect, so if the game does turn out screwed up, its got nothing to do with MP.

@Adziboy I agree with you 100%, I am sick of people saying multiplayer will ruin a game, that's just stupid. It can only make it better, but if it sucks does it really matter? Then you still got a great story mode to play. @TripSe7en Um, no exclusives? The PS3 has more exclusives than the 360. What good exlclusives does the 360 have? Gear and Halo? Wow, awesome... We have MGS, LBP, Killzone, Uncharted, inFamous, and M.A.G. Haha....no exclusives... you bet your ass we have exclusives

Wait a second, so instead of fleshing out the 'fall of rapture' via a good single player experience, they will use the multiplayer aspect to fill it out? We are going to get a prequel AND a sequel in the same package? This game appears to be trying to do too many things at once and I have real concern that they aren't going to pull it off.

Everyone should stop complaining. Every game that gets multiplayer, everyone complains and nobody honestly knows why. MGS4 had multiplayer, sure, not very good, but the single player was still absolutely fantastic. Okay, so Naughty Dog aren't the size, nor have the experience of Konami, but they are implementing multiplayer and now everyone thinks its fantastic. For once, have faith in a developer to create something you like. They won't destroy what made Bioshock amazing, and will keep everything good and rid of the bad, and then include multiplayer to make an awesome game.

@ monkeyspoon: Why would they even think of doing anything like that? The PS3 barely ever gets any exclusives as it is, they were fortunate enough to get bioshock a year after its debut...

Sounds like this multiplayer will be a bit too complex for the Halo kiddies. Maybe we won't get any racist 12-year-olds this time. And by "Halo kiddies," I don't mean people with 360s. I have one myself, in addition to a PS3 and a Wii. I'm talking about the kids who play Halo 3 multiplayer and cheat at it and haven't even touched the campaign because they suck so much at the game. Then they use the router trick and start mouthing off the "n-word" when you score a kill. They think they're so cool with their names like "InstaKilla69" and their little MLG emblems (as if they're athletes or something) and teabagging gestures. But with a story in multiplayer, that won't happen. Doesn't happen in GTA IV's multiplayer (with the whole Kenny Petrovich storyline), so I don't think it will happen here.

I'm glad this went to a different studio, and thus, should not affect the single-player game at all. This should add more replay value to the game and give us more back story. I may delve into the multiplayer; I may not. Regardless, this is win no matter how you cut it.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm excited about the multiplayer, more if it ends up being what I think it would be. There seems to be a lot ot possibilities, who knows, maybe Bioshock's multiplayer will turn out big, people is just used to seeing developers fail, on this aspect *cough* The Darkness *cough* Besides, they are doing it regardless of our comments, so let's just support them.

Appears that the many people who were looking for a prequel story have influenced them to create a component of the game to serve those fans. I doubt I will really play much of the multiplayer, but I will give it a try. Who knows? Maybe it will be pretty good? Co-op could be sweet if done right. _

Sigh. Another game where they throw in a gratuitous, completely unnecessary multiplayer component with resources, development time, and development budget that would have better off focusing on an immersive singleplayer experience.

@Rustynailrdm They said in one of the interviews that you are playing as the first big daddy created but you were put into some kind of sleep. So even though you saw all the other big daddys in Bio 1, they were created afterward just put into motion before.

well, im still not sold on the idea of tacking on multiplayer just to increase appeal. it will probably (hopefully not though) affect the single player experience. however, im glad they didnt just make it 'run through maps youve played and shoot.' this will appease those who wanted a prequel (myself not included as i didnt want a prequel) so it should be neat.

I agree with Darth Psychosis, the replay value couldd ahve been higher. I only played through Rapture twice and Bioshock is one of my favorite games. A multiplayer would be nice, and for 60 dollars, why the hell not? It doesn't have to affect the single player in anyway.

@ Cthulad: These are the people that piss me off me in particular, I love co-op play and multiplayer and a game like this could benefit from it. To tell you the truth I haven't put Bioshock back in my 360 that many times after I beat it cause its replay value to me aint to high. If you don't like multiplayer there is a simple solution for you... Oh yeah DONT PLAY IT THEN!!! If it does nothing to the single player than whats the harm done

they have a whole other team working on the multiplayer aspect of the game so how in the world will this interfere with the single player component? If anything, a multiplayer aspect to the game will keep you coming back to it long after the game has been released. This all sounds really good so far, can't wait to hear more.

Not a fan of tossing in multiplayer where it does not need it. If they can pull it off then I'm in, if it takes away from the experience, make it a download, and give me more of what the first one was. It didn't need multiplayer, unsure why this one would.

multiplayer is terrific for some people, but I really prefer to play single player. It concerns me that the concept of playing by oneself is going the way of the dodo bird. Sure hope not as I feel there are a great many people like myself who like to enjoy a game by finding all the trophies, exploring the complete game rather than a quick play then on to the next game.

Nappan: my thoughts exactly. Bioshock doesn't seem like the type of game that needs multiplayer and hopefully it's not something they just tack on and waste disc space for something that could have been part of the actual single player story. But even still. I guess it would be awesome to have a co-op side story, or even an arena. Could you imagine 16+ players all at the same time using all different sorts of plasmids?? It would be a sight to behold.
