Big Xbox One Update Changes Home Screen, Is Out For Some

Check out what the Xbox One's interface will soon look like.

Despite reworking the Xbox One's user interface back in March, Microsoft has previewed another redesigned version of its UI. Among other things, this includes a revamped Home screen that "focus[es] on speed, customization, and expression."

As seen in the video above and image gallery below, this presents a similar aesthetic but radically different layout for the system overall. The initial Home screen features a new bar that lets you jump back into whatever you were previously doing, presents two suggestions (such as recommending a new friend who might play similar games as you), and highlights a deal that should be relevant to you. Immediately below that is an area that houses a link to My Games and Apps, as well as games and apps you've previously played, along with links to other things. In the video, one lets you see the new Games With Gold titles, while the other is used for advertisements.

Now Playing: First Look At Next Major Xbox System Update

From here, you can scroll down to other screens of your choice. You can save a game or Xbox Live friend as a "content block," which creates one of these screens that can house different things. These won't always be the same--a game's content block includes a link to its Game Hub and might show an Activity Feed post from a game's developer, what friends are currently playing it, an Achievement you're close to earning, and so on. You can also choose to have a screen that houses Xbox Game Pass titles or your pins, or you can opt to have nothing but the initial Home screen.

"The team is always pushing to make the Xbox experience faster and faster," Microsoft's Mike Ybarra explained. "In this release, we've eliminated the wait between Home, Social, and My Games and Apps by consolidating them into one dashboard experience. No more splash screens means you get to fun even faster."

The Guide has also been changed once again, and like the previous revamp, speed is the emphasis. In this version, tabs are horizontal, rather than the current vertical arrangement, and it features an "action center" that houses a link to system settings, among other things.

One other change includes a redesigned Community tab on the Home screen that shows you more at once. Like the main Home screen, you can customize what's displayed using a filter system.

No Caption Provided

All of this will be available as part of an update releasing later this year. However, Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Ring will start seeing the changes today, with more Insider members receiving the update in the weeks ahead.

Coinciding with this, Windows 10's Game Bar receives an update that allows Game Mode to be enabled or disabled right from the Game Bar. It'll also be easier to customize the audio you broadcast through Mixer, and the Setting menu of Windows 10 gets a new Xbox Live Network Troubleshooting option.

@dante9006: I liked the original too.. before I got rid of my xbox one.. the UI was getting very cluttered. And sort of laggy.

I got it today and at first I didn't like it but once I realized what they were going for and I started to customize my dash it was much better.

The social stuff is also really cool and videos in the community section play instantly which is awesome.

This is a great update that people will probably hate at first but once they figure out all the custom things you can do I think they will find it really useful and good

This looks absolutely terrible. It is way to blocky and cluttered.

They make changes, I don't really care as the old UI worked fine. They make more changes, still don't really care. It's all kind of moot to me.

Well, games aren't selling the POS, perhaps constant UI tinkering can.

@onehitta323: mother of God, Grow up. If you are calling people xbots you are exactly the same as they are. You are still acting like a petty fanboy.

Be a GAMER and play games not the box it's running on. Only a complete derp would deny themselves some excellent content because they love another brand.

Guess what, whatever you're in love with doesn't give a crap about you. You are money not a person. Remember that.

@neoistheone: Correct, hence the X1 sells like shit and nobody wants one. It has flopped relative to the competition, why do people deny facts.

@Random_Matt: Why don't you go and tell Sony to start doing real updates instead of whatever it is they put out every couple of months that adds nothing new to the console.

And FYI MS makes money every time someone buys a Uncharted,HZD etc actually they make money on pretty much every AAA game out there thanks to Havok and Simplygom that's on top of the billions they make on XBL so keep counting consoles while they take your money.

@Random_Matt: who cares how it's selling. If someone wants one they buy one. Why give them crap about it? Omg someone bought a console that's not the best seller...the world is ending.

@Random_Matt: correct you are it has flopped compared to the dust collecting ps4s selling wise but Xbox is huge and doing better than ever. I will always choose pc for graphics and modding but games are enjoyable with people so multiplayer doesn't get better than on Xbox live, Xbox is killing it this generation when it comes to customer feedback.

I wish we could remove the tabs for like Mixer/Entertainment. Not interested in either. Want more notifications about new games and new add-ons. I seem to miss things these days. Overall they focus on the stuff they want to push and neglect things of interest.

Awesome. This is why I love Xbox. Constantly improving and updating their UI and adding new features. It was the same on 360 and the OG Xbox and is just one of the reasons why Xbox is just better than the competition.

Should be getting this soon as I'm in the insider program. Can't wait to try it out.

Some hints of the old 360 blade system too I see.?✌️

@gamerbum: Indeed. Cant stand these fanboys standing behind companies that are stuck in the past, just because they dont fell like they need to invest in improvements. Its ok, they are the ones who have to bear with the painfully slow download speeds, for example.

@gamerbum: I didn't get to use the blade system for too long since I got my 360 around the time they changed it, but it seemed pretty easy to use and very organized. Not sure why I kept hearing people say they didn't like.

Looks like its nearly all can get along with. While its great they listen to the feedback,i dont like we get every year a drastically different UI.

With that said, the option to set up the dashboard to your likeness is highly welcome.

Hope this UI lasts a while

@onehitta323: it hasn't been slow for about 2 years. Why don't you actually use one before you insult it.

This new dash is faster than what you get on the PS4 pro and it includes way more stuff. Stuff that Sony has copied many times but Microsoft just does it better. Especially with this new dash. It's only an early alpha and it's already excellent.

Fanboys...just play games for Christ sakes. Who cares what box they run on

@teamparadox2k: newsflash. It's been a slow, stuttering, and cluttered mess from the start. Maybe they will get it right after the 100th attempt. ps4 is way smoother and better in all ways. Sony had it right from the start :)

@onehitta323: like your brain. If you hate Xbox so much, why keep banging on about it? Over and over and over. Then when someone calls you out on the unintelligible nonsense you spurt, you just call them "xbots" because that's the best you have

@mickpunx: probably because hes about 15 and hasn't grown out of the fanboy phase of gaming yet. I remember being a fanboy and it sucked. I missed out on tons of amazing games because of stupid brand loyalty. Now I buy them all and get to enjoy everything..

Just bought setsuna rage on PC. It's absolutely gorgeous maxed out at 4k 60fps. If I was a stupid Xbox fanboy I wouldn't get to experience it. If I was a stupid Sony fanboy I'd never have gotten to have tons of fun with forza horizon 3.

Every box has games worth playing. One day the fanboys grow up and figure it out. Sadly they get replaced by more kids.

@uubershikamarux: you don't have to press anything. Just say Xbox go home.

But I'm sorry it's too much trouble for you to press a couple of buttons. It's better that it doesn't go home with one button. That way you can do whatever you have to do without ever going home.

Why go all the way home to start a new game if you can do it from the start or guide menu. Going home would be a waste of time imo.

I like most of what this update has to offer except the main thing it seems to want acknowledgement for, which is it's customizable home screen. Though I'm pro customization, if it's not at the top of the screen then what's the point. This is basically just a more advanced pinning system. Creating pinning blocks that can only be seen by scrolling down to what's off screen, booo!

Hopefully this gets improved before it makes it's way out as an official release.
