Big Xbox One Update Changes Home Screen, Is Out For Some

Check out what the Xbox One's interface will soon look like.

Despite reworking the Xbox One's user interface back in March, Microsoft has previewed another redesigned version of its UI. Among other things, this includes a revamped Home screen that "focus[es] on speed, customization, and expression."

As seen in the video above and image gallery below, this presents a similar aesthetic but radically different layout for the system overall. The initial Home screen features a new bar that lets you jump back into whatever you were previously doing, presents two suggestions (such as recommending a new friend who might play similar games as you), and highlights a deal that should be relevant to you. Immediately below that is an area that houses a link to My Games and Apps, as well as games and apps you've previously played, along with links to other things. In the video, one lets you see the new Games With Gold titles, while the other is used for advertisements.

Now Playing: First Look At Next Major Xbox System Update

From here, you can scroll down to other screens of your choice. You can save a game or Xbox Live friend as a "content block," which creates one of these screens that can house different things. These won't always be the same--a game's content block includes a link to its Game Hub and might show an Activity Feed post from a game's developer, what friends are currently playing it, an Achievement you're close to earning, and so on. You can also choose to have a screen that houses Xbox Game Pass titles or your pins, or you can opt to have nothing but the initial Home screen.

"The team is always pushing to make the Xbox experience faster and faster," Microsoft's Mike Ybarra explained. "In this release, we've eliminated the wait between Home, Social, and My Games and Apps by consolidating them into one dashboard experience. No more splash screens means you get to fun even faster."

The Guide has also been changed once again, and like the previous revamp, speed is the emphasis. In this version, tabs are horizontal, rather than the current vertical arrangement, and it features an "action center" that houses a link to system settings, among other things.

One other change includes a redesigned Community tab on the Home screen that shows you more at once. Like the main Home screen, you can customize what's displayed using a filter system.

No Caption Provided

All of this will be available as part of an update releasing later this year. However, Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Ring will start seeing the changes today, with more Insider members receiving the update in the weeks ahead.

Coinciding with this, Windows 10's Game Bar receives an update that allows Game Mode to be enabled or disabled right from the Game Bar. It'll also be easier to customize the audio you broadcast through Mixer, and the Setting menu of Windows 10 gets a new Xbox Live Network Troubleshooting option.

@7tizz: My biggest issues with this new UI is the fact they cut down the pins by about 40% and there is not enough pin to Home blocks to make up for the loss. I needed more pins, not less. Not a real fan of the way they reorganized the Home landing either as it obscures the background even more and is less transparent making it even harder to see the background. I need to make a new screenshot to counter the real estate Microsoft occupied with those lower blocks, several of which are useless (like the recommended friend).

@7tizz: If I could go back to the BLADES dashboard on the 360, I would. It's the fastest one on the 360 aka the most responsive and efficient with no lag. It got worse with the NXE and Metro dashboards.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: LMFAO, Blades were fine when there was very little content available on the Xbox. While it was faster it was also the most limited of all the user interfaces and I fail to see why anyone would want to go back to that antiquated UI.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: So what you're saying is we should deny a specific audience the chance to play previously console-exclusive games? Check out how cool and friendly this guy is.

I main an Xbox with 215 games and I don't care one bit that the games come to PC as well.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: There won't be any X1 only games anymore because they want them available to PC players also. And honestly that's a good thing. The more we move away from exclusives the better it is for all players that way it doesn't matter what system you own.

@Lord_Sesshy: Too bad, for a lot of players the exclusives are the selling point. No exclusives mean no reasons to own it, best stick to PC.

@Random_Matt: Yet the highest selling exclusive game on the PlayStation 4 by a margin of essentially 3x (Uncharted 4) only has a 14.5% attach rate, and exclusive games in general on the PlayStation 4 average about 1.8 million in sales which is an average attach rate of 2.98%.

Exclusives are great for fanboy arguments, in reality they mean very little.

@Lord_Sesshy: But they have been lacking even if you count the PC-Xbox games. Pretty much all they released that is noteworthy in the last couple years have been Halo Wars 2, Gears 4 and like 4 different versions of forza. It's good and all but their production of games has been way down lately.

Nice looking interface, looking forward to downloading it but nothing will ever beat the psp/ps3's XMB interface. It was super wallpaper friendly, easy to use and organized.

They keep changing it every few months or so, and you can never get used too it. Keep as is for a couple years for crying out loud.

What REALLY needs an update is Playstation Bore. I'm trying to get thru their store, and it's like pulling teeth with all the lag. Same dashboard as PS3, except horizontal rather thann vertical. THEY need change, not on Xbox's dashboard.

@ButDuuude: In your opinion. The PS4's dashboard is a long row of tiles with a row of icons above. I don't know why some people rate it so much, it's like a basic version of Xbox's pins.

@killercondoms: Because software needs to advance bring new features for the end user. Operating systems on PCs and phones are improved on all the time yet Sony gets away with little effort for the PS4. Compare the features of the Xbox One compared to the PS4 and you'll see why they need to start putting more effort in.

@readysalted: Perhaps you didn't read my other comment, why fix something that isn't broken? So you're saying they should change it every other month like Xbox? Because that seems to be going real well for them, I see a lot of complaints every time they mess with it. Sony gets away with it because it works and there is no need for change.

@readysalted: In your opinion. Maybe you forgot that the PS4 is outselling every other console, if it really wasn't as "advanced" as the Xbox as you claim then why is it still on top? Maybe MS should focus more on what people actually want then trying to "improve" their dashboard.

@killercondoms: You've got me there. If only I thought about sales figures when playing games I would have so much more fun! Here's me thinking Looking For Groups, Clubs, Arena custom tournaments, co-streaming (soon to support 4K streaming), Creators Program, Play Anywhere and the Insider Program were improvements for gamers, but they're pointless when PS4 gamers can say their console has sold more than Xbox One.

Suppose you'd better get ready for the 'big' fall update for the PS4 which, unsurprisingly, does not add much:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-08-09-playstation-4-firmware-update-5-0-will-add-1080p60-twitch-streaming

Still no CD playback, I see. Maybe Sony should listen to fan feedback like Microsoft does?

@readysalted: Bells and whistles. The PS4 updates have always been lackluster and I doubt that's gonna change. The people want games, MS is not doing so good in that department whereas Sony has been killing it. Both consoles have their pros and cons but back to the original topic the dashboard on the PS4 IMO is one of the pros. We're on opposite sides of the fence so this little so called debate is just gonna be us disagreeing and trying to one up each other until someone rage quits.

@killercondoms: If you like the OS, then that's fine. There's no need to worry about asking Sony for more features, though. It's not like they'll stop releasing games to focus on software improvements. That's the point.

@readysalted: I'm a simple gamer, my PS4 is used for gaming. I have no need for fancy gimmicks or features, I just want to load up a game and enjoy playing it. The more crap they add, the more hoops you got to jump through just to play. It's getting ridiculous.

This looks quite a bit better and seems faster. I'm glad you can customize it and make it minimal. I dislike crowded dashboards full of useless crap. Good to see, although I never really use the dashboard anyways. I basically live in the side menu.

I haven't been too happy about "power saving mode" being ignored recently, with both systems turning themselves on regularly to perform background network tasks. Super "evil-empire, no consent"-type stuff. No, it's not updating the OS, and it's not updating games. ...and the "yes, we're going to accept the power-down request but actually go into sleep state" is likewise uncool.

Old-fashioned mechanical power-strip switch installs incoming...

@Pyrosa: Power-saving mode on the One does no such thing, it is truly off and does no updates nor accesses the Net when set this way. I know this for a fact as I had to resort to turning that on a couple of months ago when I got dangerously close to my data cap (after dropping an external 1TB drive and having to download most of the content again). It is not a sleep state but genuinely powered down as I had no network traffic AT ALL to the One when powered down this way.

Stop with the tin foil hat conspiracy theories and misinformation already.

@dlCHIEF58: I've been in the living room working on my laptop when the system turns itself on. I've always -- always -- had both of them set to Power Savings mode, and always power them down each night. I can no longer count the number of times I've walked in the room mid-day with one or both of them turned on while the wife and kids have been gone all day.

Google "Xbox One turns itself on." Many others have apparently been asking this for years -- I only noticed recently.

I know they're not actually doing "evil tinfoil" things (marketing cache updates at worst), but frankly I don't want them doing ANYTHING while the system is supposed to be off.

The theories around other wireless devices using the same spectrum are the only viable alternative explanations IMO.

@Pyrosa: Well for one thing you can rest assured that it is not being turned on remotely by Microsoft, the machine doesn't work that way (even if they were gathering marketing info). Something else is turning it on, either activating the capacitance ON switch(which doesn't take much) or off a controller. Whenever mine would turn on randomly the solution was pretty evident...CATS. They would either walk close to the console or more often step on or knock off a controller. That or your last statement is the cause, I think I had some of that going on a few years ago when we had neighbors to the south of us on my 360 which did that for a while.
