Big Ark: Survival Evolved Update Out Now On PS4/Xbox One, Here's What It Does

Evolving all over again.

Ark: Survival Evolved's latest update is now live on PS4 and Xbox One, introducing an inventory overhaul as well as lots of new features, such as underwater bases, aquatic creature breeding, wireless generators, teleporter pads, and four new animal types. Take a look at a trailer showing off the new v. 256 update above.

Many of the new features revolve around the game's TEK Tier, a category of sci-fi-based endgame content. As part of this, you can now breed waterborne animals and create wholly sealed underwater structures. You can also use power generators to fuel new TEK structures and utilize teleporter pads to travel around the island more quickly--however these are "very expensive," according to a press release. Obtaining TEK Tier loot involves gathering the recently introduced Element resource, which is handed out after completing Boss Arenas.

Now Playing: Ark: Survival Evolved - Patch 256: Equus, Leedsichthys, Underwater Bases, and More!

The four new creatures, meanwhile, include a tameable ancient horse, a huge species of fish, a "plain old" seagull, and a large, herbivorous dinosaur. Lastly, the update--which is already live on PC--adds a new weapon: the lasso, so now you can pretend to be a cool ancient cowboy.

Developer Studio Wildcard announced in February that the dinosaur game had reached 1 million copies sold on PS4. As of August 2016, Ark: Survival Evolved had sold 1.5 million copies on Xbox One and 4 million on PC, though it has been available on those platforms for longer than on Sony's machine.

Disappointingly, it doesn't look like the game will come to Nintendo Switch--for the time being at least. The developer said in February: "We don't have any current plans for the Nintendo Switch, though I will be closely watching how that console does in its launch." Nintendo's console has since gone on to sell very well, however: the Japanese publisher recently announced that 2.74 million units have shipped to stores worldwide.

I really love this game and can't wait for the update and I really want the to remove the host barrier and they can't use the excuse that it has to load the world for every player when it can do it on the online servers and games like GTA can do it they are just worried no one will play online but they are depriving the opportunity for people with only 1 Xbox to play with just their friends and to not have to do what the host wants

Andddd, it's crap.

I like the game, one of the best I play.

But the private servers should still have a choice to put the flyer Nerf into affect.

And on top of that, I can't see worth crap. The blue on blue with tiny numbers and tiny words do nothing but give me a migraine. There should still be a way to change that spec. Until that's changed, I'll sadly drop off.

@renegade67rick: I know what you mean, but you could be missing out. I bought Ark on Game Preview (the xbox version of Early Access), for about £17 and certainly got my money's worth out of it before I stopped playing it. I'm not really into playing MP (either co-op or PvP) and I just got a bit bored of the PvE game - you can build up a decent supply of stuff, then explore for a bit and get wiped out in a few seconds by one of the dino's then haave to grind for another 5 hours to get back to where you wwere, then it happens again. Arrgghhh!!!! Though, as I mentioned, I definitely got my money's worth out of it.

Also, I paid about £18 for The Long Dark, again on Game Preview, and have put in at least 100 hours into that game. It's still Game Preview now and it's turned into one of my favourite games of all time.

Also, Astroneer is getting some very good reviews.

Early Access / Game Preview may be worth taking a look at...

@renegade67rick: Yeah im the same, not a fan of early access. Well i did buy Dirt Rally on early access and that worked out good, also bought Wreckfest which is going into almost year 4 of development.

Reason i got DR on ea is, i knew Codies would deliver, on the other hand i went by BugBear's reputation from great Flatout series on PS2 and Rally Trophy. I hope they dont go Duke Nukem route and take 10 years or so haha

"Developer Studio Wildcard announced in February that the dinosaur game had reached 1 million copies sold on PS4." "As of August 2016, Ark: Survival Evolved had sold 1.5 million copies on Xbox One"

This is interesting. The PS4 has more consoles out there but Ark is selling a half million more copies. Makes you wonder how many games is this happening with. If Sony is winning in consoles and Microsoft is winning in games bought who is actually the winner?

I have a PS4 and I'm getting a Scorpio when it comes out.

@Hellcat_1: The rest of the quote you showed here states "....and 4 million on PC, though it has been available on those platforms for longer than on Sony's machine."
