Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours

Internal speed-run competition yields 2:16:10 playtime for studio's latest sprawling Elder Scrolls fantasy role-playing game.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed a reputation for offering hours of gameplay spread across reaching open-world environments. However, for Bethesda Softworks QA tester Sam Bernstein, "hours" is just barely plural with his speed run of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.
Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.

With Skyrim closing in on its November 11 ship date, Bethesda recently held its traditional internal speed-run contest, and Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speed-run time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bernstein and the development team's Jeff Browne were likely candidates for the top of the speed-run charts, as they also clocked the fastest times in Bethesda's previous release, Fallout 3. Although they took totally different routes through the game, Bernstein finished only a mere 20 seconds sooner than his competitor.

There are no special rules in play when it comes to these speed runs, according to the Bethesda blog. The only stipulation is that no cheats are allowed.

I wonder how long it would have taken them if Skyrim did not have the fast travel function?

@Rivenearth Did you even read this part? "According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speedrun time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3." It's a bad sign if you consider the main quest being longer than Oblivion and Fallout 3's a bad sign.

Please note that this record is an hour longer than the records for both Oblivion and Fallout 3.

How did they do it you ask? It's called a "Speed Run Conest".. They speak only to the people you need to speak to, and know exactly what to do and where to go - doesn't mean the game is short, they just know how to fly through it quicker than anybody else on the planet Stop worrying lol

I don't understand why people are passing judgement like this will efffect the game length, the QA testers will know every line of code, ever hill top, every cliff, every location something could be hidden to fight, and will use the information they have to register such quick times, panic over now? hopefully

How the hek do u finish such a game so fast? I mean, yeah they obviously mean the main storyline but still, damn, especially since u usually need side quests to level up high enough to beat the game.

I will save this in notepad and try to beat this time when the game comes out, but I don't think I'm going to beat this score. RPGs aren't where I'm best at. I do have the quickest RE4 score... At least, I think I do. I haven't seen any better times than mine.(posted a photo of the score on this site) I cannot wait for this game. I already pre-ordered it.

To truly enjoy a game is to take your time with it. I spent 400h with Oblivion and Skyrim won't be any different.

@RadView Unless they are simply lying Skyrim has a lot more content than Oblivion so don't start thinking you'll be done with it any quicker...

@blacklace I would also guess they set the difficulty to the lowest possible setting so they could breeze through combat quickly and without any fear of death.

I just hope the main quest is more interesting than Oblivion. The main quest was kinda dull.

I'm sure they didn't do any sidequests. All they did was the main quests and skipped all the dialog. I'm pretty sure they both had already played through the game over 100 times already. Once you do that, it's pretty simple to speed through the game. I'd like to give them a better challenge. Lets give them Dark Souls and see how fast they play through that. LOL!!! Only if they have never played it before of course.

In a time where gamers are complaining about today's games being too short and/or shallow, it seems strange that a company would choose to advertise something like this, especially with the game's release date being just around the corner.

@Rocker6 I completely agree with you. It would generally, in my opinion, take out all the fun in a game if one were to play it as fast as possible..

They beat Oblivion in 15 minutes. Not buying Skyrim, looks consolized but I'm sure people will spend hundreds of hours in the game.

Not too shabby, but my favorite is the youtube video of someone beating Morrowind in a bit over four minutes of gameplay. << LINK REMOVED >>

Well if I spent 300+ hrs roaming around and doing side quests in Oblivion and still havnt finished that game than I guess Skyrim will be just long enough.

I could never understand the point of these speedruns,if someone enjoys doing them,I have nothing aginst that,of course, but I would never try them,I want to experience the game to the full, also, some of latest games already seem like a speedruns, they are simply too short.
