Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours

Internal speed-run competition yields 2:16:10 playtime for studio's latest sprawling Elder Scrolls fantasy role-playing game.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed a reputation for offering hours of gameplay spread across reaching open-world environments. However, for Bethesda Softworks QA tester Sam Bernstein, "hours" is just barely plural with his speed run of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.
Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.

With Skyrim closing in on its November 11 ship date, Bethesda recently held its traditional internal speed-run contest, and Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speed-run time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bernstein and the development team's Jeff Browne were likely candidates for the top of the speed-run charts, as they also clocked the fastest times in Bethesda's previous release, Fallout 3. Although they took totally different routes through the game, Bernstein finished only a mere 20 seconds sooner than his competitor.

There are no special rules in play when it comes to these speed runs, according to the Bethesda blog. The only stipulation is that no cheats are allowed.

What is the point of this? So yeah if you focus on only the main quest, do the bare minimum, skip all the dialog, and stay at a full on run for the whole game you can beat it in a couple of hours. But who is going to actually do that?

The QA guys must be sick of looking at Skyrim! I'm looking forward to being sick of the sight of it too ;)

You could beat Morrowind in 20 minutes. Doesn't mean Morrowind was anything less than epic.

Yea a speedrun's gotta be only the main quest. The whole game is supposed to have at least 300 hours of gameplay on offer!

Take away: the speed run for Skyrim took almost twice as long as the speed runs for Oblivion and Fallout 3, so even if you do only the bare minimum, there's probably about twice as much stuff to do. If you actually want to play the game and live in the world for a while, there's also more content than it's predecessors to explore.

Why would they tell people this. Now people unfamiliar with the game or stupid people will think this is like a 2 hour game and not worth buying.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just did the main quest. I mean they are there developers they already know whats gonna happen and where everything is and what not.

Not surprising, and it doesn't bother me. Bethesda's main questlines have always been the weakest part of the game (Morrowind's was okay, with Oblivion and Fallout 3 being just plain bad). If people really want story that bad, they're better off looking for a linear RPG.

@The_Fro you can also skip certain parts entirely in bethesdas games , atleast you could in fallout 3 and i think it was also possible in oblivion i think . i won't mention names for the sake of avoiding spoilers , but in fallout you had to do a quest that lead to a person you had to talk to , but you could just skip the quest and talk to that person immediately if you knew who and where he was. So they probably took some huge shortcuts that way also it was only the main quest :)

"no cheats are allowed" I was hoping that they would remove the cheats that ruined oblivion. Its hard for me to grind for a little money when I know that I can duplicate items much faster but it really ruins some of the great experience that they create with these games. Please Bethesda, no cheats this time. Take a page out of Dark Souls' book and don't dumb the game down for kiddies.

Is the speedrun just for the main quest? or for every quest? I can't imagine anyone completing it in that time for the latter, whereas if it's for the former & it took the professional speed-runners that long, you just know the game is gonna be massive.

People need to realize that the main plot is still going to be considerably longer then this since the testers were definately skipping all of the videos and dialog options (not that these game are particulary heavy on plot anyways)

In order to beat Oblivion for the fastest time possible, you have to use a glitch which transports you directly to the final boss fight. I suspect something similar is done in Skyrim to achieve such a low time.

My mind can't even begin to rap around the fact that Fallout 3 and Oblivion was beaten in only 76 minutes. It takes me double that to actually start moving on to a different town. O.o

wow thats fast...but its nothing to worry about, these people manage to rush through all these games with extreme speed, for everyone else im sure it will take considerably longer...also there are lots of side quests and exploration to do which you can spend many, MANY hours doing.

the games never been about the main mission really. in fallout 3 and nv and elder i searched out every sub quest and rare loot etc. Single is important for the closure of the game but hated the fact you couldnt carry on playing in nv anyway. this wont affect my purchase

It's normal that a gamer tester which work at least 40 hours a week for 6 to 8 moth to the same video game, complete it game fast. Usually, theses guys know the whole game, all glitch, secret passage and more tricks to complete the game... I'm not suprise at all.

Bare in mind this is a internal speedrun! So its people who have been working with the game since it was being made, so they pretty much know the game inside out! And also it did say that it toke them about an hour more than Oblivion! So it is saying something, if anything it means that its just twice as long as Oblivions main story line, is that not saying something?

Just proves the main storyline is going to be dreadully short like Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Not to worry though, these kind of games revolve around the side quests/mini quests etc rather than the main story.

Even had morrowind on my xbox aswell as my pc...Heres the kicker, I havent finished any of them yet.I have only finished arena and daggerfall so far.

@Risako9 Sorry not sure what your comments are in releation to? Are you commenting on what the QA team normally does or that you think thats what they should be doing instead of the speed runs? The speed runs were part of a end-of-project contest so doing all those things multiple times would be how they knew exactly where to go and what to do.

How is this bad press? It says quite clearly in this article "According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speedrun time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3." That's a hell of a lot longer than two games that took me weeks to get anywhere near completing. I think some people just saw "Skyrim" and "2 hours to complete" and guessed at what the rest of the article says.

How about exploring every inch of the game. Finish each and every sidequests and play all difficulties(if there are any) to make sure the game is polished and optimized properly. Just to make sure we get what we pay for. No hate. just my opinion.

heres the thing the speed run doesnt include any side quest and you know that is a lot of content no mage quest nothing jsut main story line. heck i put in 120 hours of game play in oblivion before i did the 2nd story quest. if anything the main story has always been short. its all the side quest that make it so long and deep. can wait to play it my pre order is already paid for.

I'm not concerned about the length of the main quest in Skyrim at all when they've completed Fallout and Oblivion an hour faster. Oh boy, this is gonna be a long trip.... fun, fun.

Well, and another thing I just hope they actually helped test out the bugs this time around. I'm hoping for a good game with few exploits - I have a hard time leaving the exploits alone. It seems like speed running the game would be something once you couldn't find anything else to test.

i agree with @couly this game isnt to be rushed or in my eyes to be finished until all has been explored around this huge world. The whole point for me is getting lost in it all for hundreds of hours.

the people that do these speed runs usually can preempt where the story is to take them and cut chunks of the story out due to logical gaps like how in fallout 3 you can skip half of the story if you speak to some scientist lady on the giant ship city before you are prompted to.

If they QA all games like that it's no wonder Rage didn't run on any PC when it came out.
