Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours

Internal speed-run competition yields 2:16:10 playtime for studio's latest sprawling Elder Scrolls fantasy role-playing game.

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed a reputation for offering hours of gameplay spread across reaching open-world environments. However, for Bethesda Softworks QA tester Sam Bernstein, "hours" is just barely plural with his speed run of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.
Skyrim will likely take a bit longer than two hours for everyone else.

With Skyrim closing in on its November 11 ship date, Bethesda recently held its traditional internal speed-run contest, and Bernstein took the top finishing time at 2:16:10. According to a post on Bethesda's blog, that speed-run time is about an hour longer than the top times for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Bernstein and the development team's Jeff Browne were likely candidates for the top of the speed-run charts, as they also clocked the fastest times in Bethesda's previous release, Fallout 3. Although they took totally different routes through the game, Bernstein finished only a mere 20 seconds sooner than his competitor.

There are no special rules in play when it comes to these speed runs, according to the Bethesda blog. The only stipulation is that no cheats are allowed.

I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing Bethesda wants to announce. Still, it's hardly discouraging for anyone familiar with the series.

@ADDADAC @mtait01 hmm, I think my original comment might've been misinterpreted a bit, I meant that a for a game this long that a player would have to be scary good to beat it in such a short time. But beating the previous game's prequel in 15 minutes, that sounds insane.

@squidbilly22 If I was playing COD and shot someone in the leg, they should be falling over themselves in pain. Instead the dude turns around and gets a headshot for the easy kill. What you're complaining about happens in nearly every game out there...

It's QA's job to play every single part of this game over and over and over and over in order to find bugs and other problems. This guy was only able to do this that that fast because he knows the game inside and out. It's literally his entire job to do this.

A bigger map was not the problem, what about the horrible combat ? a pretty band aid on a broken leg I never finished Oblivion because i just got bored reading random babble bubbles from nobodies throughout the world and the combat was clumsy at best.I hope they fixed the combat and made dialog more fun or it's just a bigger world of the same ol thing.Real damage at least -c'mon when you hack someone with a 6 foot sword body parts should come off.And no the COD servers will not be empty because a RPG is released.

This can be done with every game pretty much. In Oblivion just make a Redguard Warrior (amazing starting stats) and stay at level 1 the whole time. You are much, much stronger than the level 1 enemies. With fast travel and doing the bare minimum, it's easy to get under 2 hours.

Huh, but i dont think that goin out to look for new gear to buy and stockin up on potions, herbs or whatever you need or even side quests are included in this speed-run. I think its just the main story plot. If your aming for 100% complete in Skyrim then i dont think 2 houers will cut it. But then again the length of the game depends on how mutch you play.

That's longer than it took to beat oblivion and fallout, and I spent a couple hundred hours playing each of those games, if anything this is good news.

i dont like such open world games i always go off exploring the world doing dumb sidequest after side quest cuz im a completionist, i just get to lost in these type of game so i never end up even making it halfway past the main story, then i lose intrest cuz theres just to much random junk to do, thats why im probaly one of the few that prefer a finalfantasy game over these kind, just enough exploration, at least in the older ones, an the main story is always moving foward no matter what your doing, i prefer a straighter line than absolutley no line!!! an ps im not hating on this game im still gonna try it out!

oblivion was too short as of main story so this is not acceptable! i bet sidequests will be all the same like oblivion...go to a cave kill some monsters...absolutely boring...well Bethesda you just lost a customer right here! @Daishi512 i bet around 20-30 hours unless a player is absolutly usless n00b!

@eva02langley People like you don't realize that you can skip most of the Story in these games if you know how. And that is a good thing, because it's more realistic, you don't need to go through a certain story to reach your goal if you know how. According to Bethesda this games main story ALONE is 30 HOURS for the AVERAGE gamer. So stop making stupid assumptions like the game not having a real story. @Smokescreened84 Do you really think a gamer could and would try to acomplish this without knowing the game by hard. Speedrunners play a game a lot more than the average gamer and probably discovered every secret. Plus this guy is a game tester, what do you think he did the whole day? Trying to speedrun it?

Thats fine and all, if you wanna cheat yourself out of a potentially content packed game. Anyone know what the full game time would be including all side quests?

This goes to show how much freedom the game has but for anyone to race through the game is only cheating themselves out of the other things it has to offer.

most amusing thing out of this is that someone whined about cheats... wow. simply wow. please do elaborate how you can reasonably stop cheats on pc... for a non-mmo game. a brain dead monkey with proper software can cheat in any game on pc. and the choice to cheat or not is pure preference. i almost always cheat because i find it more fun that way. and i don't give a flying banana what somebody else might think about it. well... single player wise anyway. hate cheating in multiplayer robs the game of fun. anyway back to topic. while its amusing to read peoples comments with estimates on how big/small game is or how it will supposedly affect sales all im going to say quote is: "Bethesda QA tester beats Skyrim in just over 2 hours" yes you guessed it its title for this topic TESTER for crying out loud. someone who is sick and tired of that game who could do most of things with his eyes closed -_- "you listen but you dont hear" in this case its more like its RIGHT there in your face and yet you still fail to read it

Interesting, but of course it says nothing about the length of the game or even the length of the main quest. If Skyrim is anything like Fallout 3, big chunks of the main quest can be skipped if you already know where to go next -- since sometimes all you get for completing a quest is information about what to do next. Of course, none of us will know how to do that on a first playthrough. In Fallout, I think I took more than 2 hours just getting out of the vault...

@eva02langley It was a speed run, that's kind of vital in the article. Meaning that the tester did the main story to finish the game without anything else. He probably has gone through the game multiple times in testing and knows exactly what to do. Even still, Bethesda stated that the time recorded was an hour longer than the previous Scrolls speed run and I've played 240 hours of Oblivion, so don't count the game out yet.

The reason I love Bathesda... >:/ No, seriously, this is just ridiculous. Another sandbox game without any real story or objectives. Guess The Witcher 2 is by far the RPG of the year then... still, might be fun, so I am giving it a shot if I finally got some time >XD

Well it's a good thing I won't be doing the speed run thing that others like to do, what's the point in speed running your way through a game like Skyrim and Fallout without taking the time to explore and see all there is to see and do? A game like Skyrim can last for months if the player slows down and takes their time, it isn't like you need to rush your way through game after game.

For once I don't care about the negative comments people are making.. as long as I get to have this game on release and enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed and that it is not just playing the main quest which is about 10% of the game.. you see I like to play the whole game when I buy one, dont know about you guys but I plan on playing all of it.

Why does anyone care? Do you honestly buy Elder Scrolls games to beat the main quest and be done with it? No you play it for the hours you can spend defeating side quests and exploring the land - Not to mention the countless mods you can add that give you a ton more content to play through. Bottom line is that no one cares how fast you can beat the main quest - Also this guy is a tester, He played through the game numerous times already so I would love to see anyone who plays Skyrim for the first time beat the main quest in 2 hours.

Granted the main storys of the elder scrolls games have never been terribly long, Iv always been the kind of player that dose every little thing in the game and enjoys what it has to offer everyware else first. then when im finaly geting tired of looking at the same old stuff if that happens even (i still play ovlivian) around 500 hours or more i will then go for the main story. so its not a big thing for me really, i like the WHOLE expriance the game has to offer you not just the main story the whole thing of living a life in another world. heck i havent even beatin FO NV yet and i got it when it first came out (yes i beat FO 3 loved it more then NV so far. so thats where i stand.

That's pretty long for just playing through the main quest. If you take into consideration the rest of the side quests and many other things you can do for fun in the game, it's easily +20 hours
