Best PS4 Controller In 2022

Here are the best PS4 controllers still worth picking up in 2022.

The PS4 is technically outdated tech at this point, but most major game releases still find their way to the PlayStation 4 in addition to the PS5--at least for now. Plus, if you're playing PS4 games on PS5, you can save some cash by picking up extra PlayStation 4 controllers for multiplayer rather than shelling out for $70+ DualSense controllers. Additionally, the DualShock 4 and other PS4 controllers are still wonderful options for gaming on PC or mobile devices. With that said, we've rounded up the best PS4 controllers in 2022.

The first-party DualShock 4 still remains one of the best PS4 controller options for its affordable price, wide range of colors, and familiar, comfortable fit. It's proven to be one of the most popular and reliable controllers for experiencing all the best PS4 games--especially since all it takes is the push of a button to share incredible moments like a hilarious glitch or beating a Bloodborne boss without getting touched. But the DualShock 4 isn't the only PS4 controller worth considering.

The DualShock 4 is a great pad, but when you look at what Microsoft has done with the best Xbox controllers, it can feel a little disappointing not having an official PS4 Elite controller on par with the Elite Series 2. Sony did release a back-button accessory last year that maps two of the DualShock 4's buttons and lets you keep your thumbs on the analog sticks when you want to crouch, jump, reload, or anything in between, but it doesn't bridge the gap entirely. However, there's no shortage of third-party PS4 controllers that offer unique features for enhancing your gaming experience, with excellent options available from Scuf, Razer, and more.

If you've managed to snag a PS5, make sure to check out our roundups of the best PS5 controllers and best PS5 accessories. We also have lists covering the best PlayStation gaming headsets and the best keyboard and mouse combos for PlayStation.

Editor's Note: Article updated on June 21, 2022. Some of the controllers on this list are hard to find in new condition. Since new PS4 controllers aren't being manufactured, stock is low across the board. You may have to settle for a preowned controller. That said, you can still get multiple DualShock 4 color options in brand-new condition.

I wish Sony had better controllers for the PS4. Gone through like 6 controllers since 2015 and it's always the analog stick drift.

Yeah the 23 ps4 dualshocks laying around my house that have a floating left stick proves that the stick on the dual shock is not for the "good" category.

I have THE ASTRO! It has all the bells and whistles.

But it has a major neg= it's heavy af & it's noticed.

*But aside from the weight= i love it. I bought it used from a friend for $30 and AssCreedValhalla. He only used it once. i believe it as i trade with him alot.

(Anyone interested in my trades can pm me. i only say this caus ei would be interested in hearing gamers trades etc.)

**PROS~ It comes with a awesome case similar

to BeatsStudioHeadphones/XboxElite etc..

~Unique high Quality USB charging cable.. The female port on the Astro is deep and needs a super skinny USB. Which is good since we've ALL lost many a devices due to stripped out female charging ports. bah! But the cord has a mesh like quality weave of material. it stands out amongst my 120 USB cables for sure.

~Bells & whistles~ comes with different size/shaped thumbsticks and back buttons.

I use none of these & neither does my wife. Back buttons are the coolest useless invention lol.. in theory they sound great but i cant get used to em.

~The case has a built in spot for all the pieces similar to XbxoElite..

My Bottom Line~ i don't need a controller this fancy but the quality is AWESOME!

And just holding it feels powerful.. It's fun to bust it out every now & then when my regular PS4 controller dies.(i don't have a PS5 yet). I don't even know if they work on PS5...

~As far as the weight goes~ i just bought a cheap WIRED Xbox SX controller

for $25bucks @ Wlamart or Target. i think WM. for my unused XboxOne that i now moved to bedroom next to PS4.. It is th elightest controller ive ever felt. Lighter is lower quality but feels great imo. im not a lil dude either, i lifted for most of my life.. Whatevs..

The Razor Elite is probably identical to the Atro except newer..

The Scuff one looks & sounds great & i want it since my PS4 controllers are suspect..

**ps4 Controller ocmplaint~ i can't get it to not Sync to steam whenever i try to use it on console again since... I turned my PC OFF and it still wouldn't sync back to PS4. Even after resetting it.. i thought for sure i was a idiot until i saw pages of google complaints about it... Lesson learned= don't sync to steam unless it's forvever ur PC controller lol

I would have liked to have seen a non-modular option (less parts to go wrong/get grimey) where the left analog and d-pad are swapped (or as I feel, in their right places 😏).

What is with the opening sentence statement of this article, which really has nothing to do with controllers.

The PS4 has had an excellent generation, despite its slow start when it came to must-play exclusive games. But while those big marquee exclusives trickled out slowly, the PS4 held on by delivering the best console versions of most third-party games.

Just do a quick google search, ps4 and xbox1 opened with plenty of games as well as exclusives. And within a year both consoles had nearly 160 games both multiplats and exclusives covering a wide range of tastes.

Throughout the PS4's lifespan, however, Sony's DualShock 4 has proven the best wireless controller to experience all of the PS4's games with--

Yeah, ....as controllers are heavily licensed, adding around 30% to the cost of a controller just to work on a console system. Meaning that wireless third party controllers were rarer then unicorns and would cost so much higher then the OEM, that no one would bother. Maybe razer might put out a $150 specialty controller.

This is an Eddie written article for sure.. Nope a Mat Paget, well at least not a click bait copy past article from another site. D for effort at least, weird effort though.

Astro c40 is bad. Do not buy. Bought the controller from amazone and the buttons gave up in 1 week. one by one the x square triangle required hard press to work. now the controller is in a trash can.

Scuf is the worst controller I've ever had. Entirely customized, it cost me around $250 and it didn't last a year before the joysticks were staying stuck far from the center. And no, I'm not the volatile throwing controllers type, even my PS1 controllers work properly.

Make the Option and Share buttons much bigger and make that stupid touch pad much smaller, and I'm in.
