Keyboard switches, explained

Different types of switches will appeal to different and whether you're going with a Cherry MX switch like Cherry MX Red or Cherry MX Blue, there are plenty of keyboards worth your time. It can get confusing quickly, especially if you can't test these keyboards yourself and truly tell the difference with your own fingers. Thankfully, it's easy to understand exactly what you'll be getting if you understand the terminology.

First off, linear versus tactile switches keys. Linear means there is no physical feedback mechanism to indicate when a keystroke is registered. It's smooth, relatively quiet, and preferred for rapidly tapping on keys. Tactile means there is a bump or click to indicate you've hit the actuation point; it's louder, but some prefer having physical feedback for keystrokes. It really comes down to preference. Actuation point is the distance at which a keystroke is registered; a shorter distance means you don't have to press the key down as far, but can lead to errant inputs. Actuation force is, well, the force needed to press the key down. Of course, there are all the quality-of-life considerations to think about, too, like multimedia keys, whether you want a programmable key row and such.

While Cherry has been the long-time dominant manufacturer of mechanical switches, some gaming peripheral brands have started making their own proprietary mechanical switches for their keyboards, namely Razer and Logitech. For a brief overview of the most common mx switches, see below:

  • Cherry MX Red Switches: Linear
  • Cherry MX Blue Switches: Tactile and Clicky
  • Cherry MX Brown Switches: Tactile with a Bump
  • Cherry MX Speed Switches: Linear with a very short actuation point
  • Romer-G Linear Switches: Linear
  • Romer-G Tactile Switches: Tactile with a Bump
  • Razer Yellow Switches: Linear
  • Razer Orange Switches: Tactile with a Bump
  • Razer Green Switches: Tactile and Clicky
  • Steelseries OmniPoint Adjustable Switches: Linear with adjustable actuation point

@pillarrocks: I tried a RD wireless kb 90%, red keys... not too bad.

No board flex, metal construction, backlit, reasonably good feel. Plenty of macros, and memory. Wheel at top for volume and light intensity.

Typing was decent, not full sized keys but their feel was good enough. Gaming no lag, I could notice.

Dependability... who knows, but at 1/3 the price of a logi wireless G KB, maybe worth a try.

Bunch of overpriced LED trash for zoomers. Get yourself a Filco, Topre or a Ducky. Real keyboards without gimmicky trash, and will last you 20 years of daily use.

How is the Everest Max Keyboard not even on this list? It's better than any of the ones listed... Is even a single one of these a hot swappable board? This is a shill post and not an actual best gaming keyboards list.

Also any Glorious keyboard is also better than any of these. Imagine charging $230 for the black widow in 2023. LOL

You lost all credit with Razer as best high-end k/b. Razer is nothing more than cheap, breakable trash, with a high end price.

I go through keyboards pretty fast, from work to home I spend way to much time around them. My coworkers used to use the apple Magic keyboards at $125 a pop, but they eventually all started using Logitechs with keyboard side macros. Lg510. I use the logitech wave wireless with macros and change them out frequently - a few times a year. Tons of keys and macros, decent ergonomics, and good cushioning. Great price.

At home I still use a ergonomic Logitech gaming kb, not only because of the angled wrist reliefs but also because you can switch out the keys if they lose cushioning and the whole board. Since I play mostly MMORPGs along with adventure, CRPGs I just do not need mechanical over comfort.

I know friends that will wear out their cushions until it feels like your hitting a rock- so much damage to your hands. Mechanical keyboards are awesome with great tactile feel but rarely are they comfortable or will they last - save for the ones you can replace the wasd keys easily, including the springs. I would love a G510, but if you spend a lot of time on a KB... go with comfort, by replacing them often.

Been gaming with a PS2 genius keyboard for more than 10 years. Call me cheap if you want, but call the keyboard reliable too. Also, no USB problems when installing Windows for the first time, EVER. :D

@santinegrete: I have seen those before, terrible layout. Small delete key, and where the sleep and power buttons are- accidental hits will be a funny logout of games.

They have sold millions of them though. But they have almost no padding, your finger joints must be made of steel by now.

I prefer brown switches for quiet and comfort. And wish all keyboards would tone it down with the RGB lighting, it is getting out of hand. STOP with the Unicorn puke!

@jenovaschilld: Matter of fact, my buddy Barry was going on an on about some MP matches, so I took a picture of his keyboard, mouse, and mouse pad and posted it on Discord - he got roasted with the my little pony, fairy dust ribbing.

Hey you get what you deserve.

@flueburn:

Hey, why should you opt for these wired keyboards? In today's generation nobody literally uses even for gaming. However, who will not opt for some Wireless mechanical keyboards if you really get similar features at the same price range?

i'd have to say the Corsair K70 model(s) should be included if only to replace the K68. it has almost everything the others shown here have to offer incorporated into a single package; nice switches that are easily accessible, nice RGB options, a better look than most, nice wrist rest, multiple switch types available, multimedia & volume controls, optional additional textured gaming key caps included, multiple models/colors available and competitive pricing. the only thing i'd say they may really be missing is added extra macro keys, which i don't actually have room for on my keyboard/mouse tray anyway.

the K70 LUX RGB is the nicest keyboard i have ever used out of many over the last ~20 years of heavy PC use.

This sucks compared to the PC Gamer article of the same topic. I had to see what Gamespot had to say on this, and just as I thought - weak. Go with PC Gamer, Tom's Guide, Tom's Hardware, PCGamesn, RockPaperShotgun.

This has never been much of a site for PC Gamers - at all.
