Battlefield 4 shipped with "dirt all over it," says Oddworld creator

Lorne Lanning blasts the AAA game market, saying "F**k that business."

Electronic Arts' multiplayer shooter Battlefield 4 shipped with "dirt all over it," according to Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning, referencing the bugs that marred the game's launch last year. Lanning's comments came as part of an interview with VG247 wherein he blasted the AAA market overall.

"F**k that business. I don't want to play with that business, because it was a losing business," Lanning said. He claimed that AAA game publishers can become beholden to shareholders and as a result, run the risk of building games by the book instead of branching out and trying new things.

"I'd rather not make games than go f**king be a slave for public companies who care more about their shareholders than they do about their customers," he added.

Lanning pointed to the release of Battlefield 4 as an example of publisher executives putting the desires of its shareholders ahead of gamers.

"Why did Battlefield 4 ship? You know that team was crying. You know that team knew that game wasn't ready to go," Lanning said. "You know that team f**king spent a lot of sleepless nights building that sh** out to look as good and play as good, when it was able to be experienced, being played as they were intending it to be played."

No Caption Provided

"Someone made a decision that the shareholders are more important than the customer. And we see a lot of that," he added. "How do you blow that? How do you take that f**king jewel and ship it with dirt all over it?"

It's not just Battlefield 4 that "shipped with dirt all over it," but also predecessor Battlefield 3, according to lead designer David Goldfarb. Writing on Twitter, he said, "So did BF3." Goldfarb has since left EA to join Payday developer Overkill Software.

We've reached out to EA/DICE for a response to Lanning's comments.

Defending Battlefield 4's rocky launch, in February EA chief creative officer Richard Hilleman acknowledged that the game had some issues at release, but said that the product overall has been "exceedingly successful" from both a sales and gameplay perspective. He also brushed aside a question about Battlefield 4 not being tested before release, saying more than 10,000 people beta tested the game.

I just find it hilarious that EA and Activision charge us all $60 to play their games and then charge us all at least $50 more for the complete experience. Basically, these morons are shipping half a game. I don't mind paying $20 for a Season Pass but $50 is just greedy. Just another example of corporate greed. I remember the days of Goldeneye when we got the full game with all the maps and we were just fine playing it over and over again.

Listen to this guy Lome Lanning! He speaks the truth. The developers here wanted to delay BF4 release date. But EA had already promised its shareholders that the game would be released at a certain day and so therefore no delay. So EA went ahead and pushed BF4 out onto the market knowing that it had flaws. The mindset here was that whatever flaws the game has can always be patched later through updates. This is a clear case of EA putting its shareholders in front of the consumer. This is the essence of what Lome Lanning is talking about.

Its true the stockholder are the reason why it shipped before it was ready, simcity before that and so forth. Publisher/stock holder should have no say in when the game comes out/ is ready.

Take2 is only publisher that gets this rockstar says when the game is ready and shipping * the developer* not the publisher

right. Oddboxx package had severe compatibility, crashing, not just minor bugs or glitches. 2 of the games would not even run at all for people.

I was never a BF 4 fan until about 2 months ago. I rented it and liked it. Bought the game for PS4 and couldn't believe what I was missing. I rarely lag, glitch out, or have any problems. Obviously that is because I bought it later then the true fans. Everything is good, about to play naval assault. Ns if its broken or not, but BF 4 is epic.

Its sad to see DICE go through this, they are having to release games before they are even ready to meet deadlines for EA. What will happen if they do not meet that deadline well then shareholders get upset. This is what happens when big business gets involved. The same goes in all aspects of life as well, things lose their more personal feel.

Is that what you call letting a load of people who own battlefield 3 play a demo of battlefield 4?

And just yesterday DICE indefinitely postponed the release of Battlefield's latest DLC on the day it was supposed to be released. The delay is for PC gamers only which is their biggest consumer base. A little heads up would be nice, or atleast a future release date. EA/DICE just keep fucking us over even though we bought "PREMIUM" membership like fools from them. I swear I've had it with BATTLEFIELD.

By the way. THE GAME STILL HAS A LOTTA BUGS!!! Game breaking ones that too.

As someone who has played these games since BF 1943 and loved them, it is so frustrating dealing with this game when all you want to do is enjoy playing some video games.

The fact that BF4 has been so heavily advertised and has been allowed to release a game that is so fucked up systematically boggles my mind.

I spent almost $700 in total buying an xbox one and BF4 Premium and still to this day it doesn't function in the way that it is supposed to. The sound in multiplayer doesn't work, constantly the game crashes, and all sorts of small other bugs are still present. Today Naval Strike is supposed to be available to me, oh yeah can't even see that on the menu!

It's an absolute joke to me that these guys are still making money off of hard working people like me who unknowingly buy into their false advertising. The developers and companies involved with BF4 are going to lose everything if they forget who pays theyre pay cheques.

I know I'm in the minority here, but this is my favorite game of 2013-2014. I can understand the frustration of the first month or so, as I suffered through many lockups and reboots myself. However, my system (PS3) has not locked up or booted me from a server in months. The problem is corrected. I played BF3 the whole year prior and plan to play this until the next release. Of course I play other games, but always seem to come back to the online play of Battlefield. The new DLC is awesome and have had no apparent issues.

Now... I'm not saying there haven't been issues in the beginning, however, the good here highly outweighs the bad. At the end of the day, its about something that you have fun playing and keeps you coming back. BF4 does that for me (even though I suck at it and have a k/d ratio of .50)

done forget whiny gamers that demand a new iteration each year then complain its nit finished. Takes 4-5years to make these new Battlefield games to run the way they are meant to. Not 1.5 years. Its just as much fault for these type of gamers as it is the developers for putting it out there. EA should use MS Azure servers for XB1 and their normal servers for PS4

Paying hard earned cash for a product that doesn't work as advertised and then calling them out on their bullsh*t doesn't constitute as whining.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not whining when there are legitimate problems my friend. If the game didn't have bugs and glitches galore and gamers cried then they'd be whining, but the game is FUCKED with issues, and after shelling out 60 I don't want to hear ish about (how it takes 4-5 years) if it's not ready don't release it, and when you do release a game make sure it's functional. How is it that people call gamers whiners for wanting a product that isn't riddled with bugs and problems. Some people are just delusional and so fanboyish to a product that it's sad.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The world was better when PS1/PS2 were not online. The games shipped when they were done. They did not/could not "patch" the games later, so they had to be done right, and Sony QA would not allow a game to ship with the PS logo on it until it passed quality testing.

The "patch" has lowered the bar for what can ship to retail.

I'm old now, and play less, and am always behind, so I play games like Metro: Last Light from PS+.

My experience with PS+ games is that after a year or two, the patches have all been incorporated and the games all play well.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>I too come from the old school era, where gaming didn't have this patch mess that allowed devs to release a 50 percent game. This is why every chance I get I voice my opinon, especially to those that damage control/defend/support this garbage. I remember getting a game, coming home, and popping it into my ps2 without the need to install and download day one patches that really don't do much of anything. Over the past few years I've bought less and less games, because too many are busted. I completely agree with your statement, and I don't buy games either until I'm certain they work and are worth the 60 dollar price tag. I hope others start doing the same and vote with their wallets, it's the only way to get thing back on track.

Well, with Unreal Engine 4 being offered to developers at $19.99/month and Cryengine 3 at $9.99/month, developers are more enabled than ever to develop amazing games with incredible visuals all the while free of greedy publishers, and I'd wager that companies like EA brown their suit pants at the thought of developers leaving en-masse, simply saying "we don't need you anymore," and then paying ultra-low prices for professional game-making tools to the best game engines in the industry.

He is spot on! Large companies beholden to the shareholders. This is quite accurate and also a larger problem that not only extends to the gaming industry, but to many large corporations.

He says, "I'd rather not make games than go f**king be a slave for public companies who care more about their shareholders than they do about their customers," You could simply swap out the word "games" for anything else and it would describe so many other large greedy ass corporations today.

We are seeing so many game companies going under and it's turning into a few massive AAA game studios and everyone else becoming indies. The middle of the road studios are becoming so rare today. Kind of like America today: The super rich, and everyone else. There is no balance in this.

Btw.. no I don't play Battlefield games or many other AAA titles anymore. There are some amazing games out that came from Indie, or smaller devs. Getting really tired of most huge AAA publishers. EA has so much hate for a reason. The only huge AAA left that is in a league of their own is RockStar. They are the exception.

@lateralus1 Except...when you peel past the shine on GTA V, you can see that yes, even GTA V, was released without a major portion of the game which was promised to be ready...simply unfinished.

How about those heists, anyone? Oh, right. Still not there yet.

@Darth Cola i feel the EXACT same way. ive played bf since 1942 and everything in between, im a loooong time vet. they have killed this franchise for me, sadly im done buying battlefield. if i ever think about going back, IF. they would have to make bfbc3, and i would HAVE to see reviews. those reviews would have to say it plays/feels like bfbc, and no major game breaking bugs. then maybe i would get it.

Yeah, I know... I read Gamespot, but there's not a lot of choices.

This site gave an 8 to seriously broken games released last fall. So, don't believe the 'mercy rate' 8.

Amazon reviews were livid, GS gave it an 8.

Ok, I repeated that three times... for emphasis. Sorry.

I recall they gave Killzone a 7, which was not 'broken.'

It caused me to pause and consider....

@biggamer194 @Lawdog1521 That's just the typical entitled gamer response. There was nothing wrong with the GTAV single player campaign and with the exception of a rocky start, which they warned us about, there's nothing wrong with the online. Just because some people ruin the game trough hacking or because some aspects of the game aren't what you want it to be doesn't mean it was a bad game or shouldn't have been released.

<< LINK REMOVED >> No it's not typical whiny gamer response. When a game has several rendering issues (GTAV online you drive so fast that the game objects don't populate). When the game crashes and freezes constantly, when you loose your saved data, when the servers you connect to online are extremely laggy, when you ban people for using money exploits that should've been fixed in the first place and state it ruins the game yet you allow them to buy shark cards which is the exact same thing except you have to pay real life money (basically saying if you pay to get more money it's ok, but doing it on your own is). I never said it was a bad game, but I did say like MANY of the games that are out as of now it was definetely not ready and the level of issues and lack of features it was supposed to have are proof of it.
