Barbie 2? Margot Robbie Says She Can't Rule It Out

Actress Margot Robbie has once again commented on the possibility of making another Barbie movie, saying she can't rule it out. Speaking to Variety, Robbie said she and the team "put everything" in the first Barbie, which is 2023's highest-grossing movie worldwide with more than $1.4 billion. She said she's proud of the fact that Barbie had so much success as an original movie in a landscape dominated by sequels, prequels, and remakes. Going back and making a sequel might be challenging for a number of reasons, Robbie said, but she didn't close the door entirely.

"Part of me is like, 'Oh no, if we do a Barbie 2 then...' I don't know. But then at the same time, I would do anything to be back on that set. I'd do anything to be back on that set with [director Greta Gerwig] again; with [Ken actor Ryan Gosling] again. Playing Barbie is just so joyful. So it's not no but also it would take a lot for it to live up to it," Robbie said.

Before this, Robbie said she "can't imagine" a Barbie sequel. Her latest quote on the subject seems to leave the door a little more open in terms of the possibility of making a follow-up, but nothing is confirmed at this stage.

Gerwig is making a Chronicles of Narnia film for Netflix as one of her next projects, so she's likely busy with that right now. As for Robbie, she and Gosling are teaming up again for a new Ocean's 11 movie that will be a prequel to the George Clooney films.

Money talks, and there will certainly be executives and stakeholders calling for a Barbie sequel given its enormous success at the box office. Whether or not it ever happens is another story.

Also in the interview with Variety, Robbie talked about how a producer on the movie Oppenheimer--which released the same day as Barbie in July--called her to say she should move Barbie's release date. "He was like, 'I think you guys should move your date.' And I was like, 'We're not moving our date. If you're scared to be up against us, then you move your date,'" she recalled.

The two films launched on the same day, sparking a phenomenon known as "Barbenheimer."

Barbie will be available to stream on Max beginning December 15. There will also be an American Sign Language (ASL) version, featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi signing throughout the film.
