Assassin's Creed Odyssey Dev Wants Future Games To Feature Male And Female Protagonists

"I don't know why we would go back."

This year's Assassin's Creed Odyssey allows players, for the first time in franchise history, to choose to play as a man, Alexios, or a woman, Kassandra. Game director Scott Phillips said in a new interview that he hopes future games developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the lead developer on Odyssey, will also offer players the ability this kind of choice.

"I think it would be a mistake to limit our players, limit our fanbase from as many people as possible," Phillips told GI.biz. "I don't know why we would go back. We should continue pushing in this direction, bring in more players, more fans to enjoy this experience and make it their own experience."

Ubisoft Quebec's last Assassin's Creed game, Syndicate, also featured male and female protagonists, but not on the level of Odyssey. That older game featured brother and sister assassins Evie and Jacob Frye with a character-swapping setup throughout. In Odyssey, you get to choose right at the start if you want to play as Alexios or Kassandra.

Playing as either Alexios or Kassandra does not affect the story or gameplay. However, both characters have different voice actors and character models, similar to how the male and female Commander Shepards were treated in Mass Effect.

The spinoff Assassin's Creed III: Liberation features a female protagonist, Aveline.

At E3 2014, Ubisoft made headlines for stating that none of the playable characters in Assassin's Creed Unity are women because it would have doubled the workload.

The quote from Scott Phillips, the director of Odyssey, seems to suggest that he's talking about future games from Ubisoft Quebec and not necessarily Ubisoft overall. Development on Assassin's Creed games is headed up by one studio with Ubisoft's other teams globally acting as support teams. For example, Ubisoft Montreal led development on last year's Assassin's Creed: Origins.

Odyssey launches on October 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game is also coming to Nintendo Switch, but only as a streaming title in Japan.

i really liked the way syndicate let you swap characters. one of the things im most bummed about is that i do have to choose between characters because they both look really awesome. they should definitely do more of that going forward

Well, duh. They need to add character creator, though.

The default Shep and FemShep are both meh imo.

Well sure, if you want the story to suffer from replaceable protagonist syndrome such that your story barely changes with a completely different character slotted into it.

Oh wait, that's Ubisoft open world games for ya.

Does or does not..? Which is my nr. 1 question since this was announced.

Off topic, but did anybody else prefer Assassin's Creed games when they were 30-50 hour, city-focused, story and character driven adventure games instead of 200 hour open-world giant RPG collectathons mostly set in a wilderness? The games have no soul anymore.

@tom_cat_01: afaik there are plenty of those types of games you are talking about, why not change it up? you can always go back and replay them if you enjoyed them that much. this way nobody is saying "it's the same thing every year" anymore

@tom_cat_01: Assassin's Creed 1 is my favorite AC game. It was actually about planning and executing assassinations.

Now, it's just about you being Forrest Gump to history and following the glowing spots to where the devs want you to be, then pressing the buttons to kill the targets where the devs want you to do so. Oh, and 30+ hours of meaningless open world fluff.

No, Origins was excellent and the series needed to evolve.

Of course that's when the AC series peaked , everything that came afterwards was DLC skimming and extending the main game into real boredom.

Maybe Hollywood needs to follow suit and have 2 versions of every movie with a version for both sexes. Hell, maybe 42 versions for those multiple genders too.

Ubisoft, I demand an Attack Hellicopter protagonist option in future games!

I think thats dumb to be honest - i much rather have a distinct and well written character than a washed down one because you need to make him/her playable in all shapes and forms.... i don't want a female Geralt of Rivia nor do i want to have a male Lara Croft - all this will lead to is what we have been seeing in movies as well in recent years - worse and worse writing with weaker and weaker characters...

Of course its a different story if you do not play a distinct character.

ps: Gamespot why is your website so unbelievably slow???

@Nemesis7884: Uh, you do realize that RPGs and the like have had selectable-gender (and race, species, etc.) player characters since the early 1980s, right? The idea is that you define the character yourself, through the choices you make during gameplay.

And let's face it, the only really memorable protagonists this series has had are Ezio and arguably Altair, so it's not exactly like they're losing much with this approach.

@bigdavex: Because in those days there wasn't voice acting, so silent protagonists didn't seem so stupid and they were able to get away with one of the party members having zero character and limited interaction with lots of text.

Doesn't work so much anymore. And games that didn't feature a checkbox creator protagonist (like Deus Ex) had stronger protagonists.

@Thanatos2k: We've had fully-voiced protagonists with selectable genders (and backgrounds) since the first Mass Effect game back in 2007, if not even earlier. Are you saying that the first three Mass Effect games would have been better if you'd been forced to play as a male Shepard with a fixed backstory, or that, to pick an even earlier example, the first Resident Evil game would have been better if Jill had been the only playable character?

@bigdavex: Except in Mass Effect it's literally the same character no matter which gender you pick. Which is kind of insulting to be honest. They're absolutely not different people.

In Resident Evil - they are absolutely different characters who play differently and act differently. That's a game done right. Ubisoft not so much.

@Nemesis7884: and this is all for the sake of diversity. Honestly its lazy, nowadays you have to have a black version for every white character or female version for every male character when it comes to iconic figures that existed for years, when instead they could create a new character who's black or female with their own unique story.

@Nemesis7884: your comment makes it sound like the weak writing and characters in some games are somehow due to the inclusion of women, which isn't true of course. If there's a problem with writing and characters, then it needs to be fixed instead of rooting out positive features from a game (i.e. diversity). Look at Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and how wonderfully it manages the female characters and writing (same goes for other Uncharted games except that you don't play as a female in them).

The choice about characters is a suggestion going forward not an imposition on previous games, so your examples about Geralt and Lara are not relevant. Moreover, it should be noted that some games are made around a character while in AC you get different playable characters in almost every game. Secondly, an open-world quasi-RPG game usually gives you a choice about your character anyway, so the element of choice is a feature of RPGs as well. Finally, by providing a choice over characters, the game does not take away your choice. You can play as a male protagonist and the fact that it is possible to play as a female protagonist has no bearing on your gaming experience.

This is not an Assassins Creed game anymore, just a generic open world game. Don't understand why some companies modify the essence of games, final fantasy, assassins creed and resident evil for example.

@Tidus1012: Because they think they can make more money copying something else that became popular, and you sort of answered your own question because I think all of your examples are series where it worked. I'm not sure about Final Fantasy, but it sort of felt that way going from FFVI to FFVII so it worked for them then.

It's worked out well for Legend of Zelda too.

Because then you end up with with games like Resi 7 and AC origins. Which were both great.
