Formerly an April fools' joke, Arma 3 has now received a very real kart racing addition in the form of the $1.99 Arma 3 Karts DLC.
According to developer Bohemia Interactive, this new content for the military shooter "features a 20hp 4-stroke engine go-kart, several kart liveries, playable race driver and marshal game characters, new kart-racing Time Trials and Steam Achievements, plus various race objects to build your own racetracks."
Described as a "fun little side-step" by Bohemia, some of the proceeds from its sale will be donated to the Czech Red Cross.
The quirky DLC is also a test for the developer to see how its approach to DLC in Arma 3 will work in practice. In an attempt not to fracture the playbase, new content released for the the shooter will be available to all, albeit "with reasonable restrictions applied to those who have not purchased them."
"A key component of our new approach is the idea that, while new content is paid, new features are entirely free," said project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land. "This enables us to grow the platform with significant new gameplay updates for everyone who owns Arma 3, while offering up great extra content for those players who want to experience it and support our ongoing development."
Bohemia Interactive outlined its roadmap for the future of Arma 3 earlier this month, including info on a "major" expansion planned for next year.
