Arkham City swoops to UK number one

Fourth biggest launch of the year sees Batman: Arkham City top the UK Charts, Football Manager 2012 debuts in third; Dance Central 2 debuts at 40.

Batman: Arkham City romped to number one in this week's UK Charts, almost doubling the sales figures of its predecessor, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Football Manager 2012 also enjoyed a successful debut in third spot, narrowly missing out to FIFA 12, which clung to second place by a mere 1,800 units. The Sims 3: Pets was the third and final new entry this week's top 10, entering at six.

A range of preorder incentives may have helped Arkham City's week-one sales.
A range of preorder incentives may have helped Arkham City's week-one sales.

Forza Motorsport 4 fell from top spot to fourth, while Rage saw the biggest drop in chart position in the top 10 this week, falling from fourth to eighth. Just Dance 3 (5) and Zumba Fitness (9) continued to feature in the top 10.

A couple of high-profile new releases didn't fare so well, however. Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One entered at 24, while Dance Central 2 entered the all-formats chart at 40--with less than 10 percent of the sales of Ubisoft's rival terpsichorean title and not even making the Xbox 360 top 10.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure saw a climb up the charts from 16 to 11, while Mario Kart Wii continued to enjoy its resurgence in sales, moving from 19 to 13. It wasn't such a successful tale for Dark Souls and Jonah Lomu's Rugby Challenge, which both saw falls out of the top 10, from seven to 18, and 10 to 19, respectively.

This Week's Top 10 ending October 22, 2011:
1. Batman: Arkham City
2. FIFA 12
3. Football Manager 2012
4. Forza Motorsport 4
5. Just Dance 3
6. The Sims 3: Pets
7. Pro Evolution Soccer 2012
8. Rage
9. Zumba Fitness
10. Gears of War 3

I'm waiting for the PC release. Really looking forward to playing it but I might leave it until next year. It's coming out at the same time as a few other games that I'm more interested in.

Article might as well be titled "Gamespot in shock as good game reaches Number 1" considering the amount of crap that sometimes gets a free ride around here.

Well since not enough people care about being treated right as a customer, I guess that sound I heard was consumer rights going out the window. Thank you, Arkham City. Thank you, people who knew about the cut content and bought it anyway. And a big thank you to WB Interactive for proving that people will take anti-consumer bs so long as they get to play a game and for opening the door for other publishers to start doing the same bs to their games. Thank all of you. Now thank off.

Dark Souls is a great game but it is geared to the minority. It doesn't "deserve" to be #1 if people don't like it. From should either add an easier difficulty option or get out of the way.

Just pre ordered Batman Arkham City for PC on STEAM ...so excited, cant wait.. STEAM is REALLY good for pc gaming. Peopel give STEAM the baddest wrap, but i think its part of whats keeping PC alive. If you like managing in games like NBA 2K or FIFA or MAdden Franchise mode, i fully recommend you checking out Football manager 2012, even if its just the demo.

"Fourth biggest launch of the year..." Just shows you how good of a year it's been, and we still have huge games on their way.

Don't really believe that Batmans first week successs has anything to do with pre order incentives, more likely it's down to the fact that it's one of very few games that will live up to hype. I've not played it yet, I game on PC but it did affect my descision on which new graphics card to get, it's coming free with new geforce cards atm.

Zumba is there because that's the direction the powers that be want it, they are pushing this Kinect garbage down everyones throat... We're the one's that built Xbox & Playstation to it's current status, and this is the way they treat us... Nintendo is smart, they put Wii in to be different and to stay in the game, now they are reversing course and doing the traditional game system again. Cunning, they definately know how to stay in the game. Too bad Sega dropped out they are just as unique as Nintendo, and only Nintendo could pull off a Motion Game system, Microsoft and Sony will see that Kinect and Move just won't justify the programming and marketing $$ to keep it going... I hope it's a painful lesson [money wise] too! Sigh, we just have to wait until they get this casual junk out of their system... I know so many people that would never buy anything that makes you have to get up and jump around to enjoy their games... Chair and desk or couch, it's been that way for the past 40 years and it'll never change... Do you see me going to a Movie and running around the freaking theater? NO! smucks.

Dark Souls isn't in the top ten because it was not advertised enough. Hell, I'm a gamer, I literally work at Xbox/MS and yet I still didn't hear about the game until after it came out. After seeing it played it does look interesting, but with so many other great games out it's hard to buy them all.

Arkham City clearly deserves all the praise and sales it gets -- one of the best games of this generation, hands down.

@ITLM16 I have to agree completely. The fact that Dark Souls is not on this list says a lot about the state of gaming these days.

Well deserved! brilliant game absolutely loving it I never thought that rocksteady could match the opening sequence of batman:AA but they did an excelent job is love it to hold that spot for a few weeks but BF3 is out this week so there's no chance of that sadly

Was there ever any doubt? Rocksteady did a fantastic job with this game and I hope that it grabs goty because these are the type of games that deserve it, not those that shall remain nameless in this sentence......

No surprises here. Football Manager always sell well in UK:) However, these numbers are only from retail stores or this includes Steam? I think FM is selling more and more through the Valve system.

I'm surprised Rage is still even in the top ten. After all that development time and hype, they came out with what is arguably a mediocre game. Way to go Arkham City!

@Gelugon_baat nah it just took a publisher letting a dev company actually build something decent out of a comic franchise, there been to much marvel shovelware from activision. Thought Batman Arkum asylum raised the bar for superhero games. then bought x-men destiny and saw that activision just dont get it. Its just about 99% waste there license to build trash,,,, batman and the xmen legends games , only decent franchises i can think of using dc/marvel licenses!!
