Apple Arcade Launches This Fall

Apple has a new games-focused subscription coming soon.

Apple's latest big product announcement event takes place later today, September 10. It's expected to reveal the iPhone 11 line of devices, possibly among other pieces of hardware, but the company is increasingly focused on its various services. Those include the upcoming Apple Arcade, which is slated to launch this fall but hasn't been discussed in much depth since it was revealed earlier this year. We could hear more about Arcade during the Apple event today, but in the meantime, you can catch up on the original announcement and what the company shared at the time below, or check out our list of all the Apple Arcade games.

Apple is expanding its presence in the video games space with its own game subscription service called Apple Arcade--designed to provide access to a variety of titles that will be accessible on mobile, desktop, or in the living room. Unlike Google's Stadia, Apple Arcade won't be a cloud streaming service, however. A brief overview trailer of Apple Arcade is linked below, and if you're interested learning even more about it, check out everything we know about Apple Arcade.

Now Playing: Apple Announces Its New Gaming Service - GS News Update

Essentially, Apple's service takes the form of a monthly subscription that provides unlimited access to a curated selection of paid titles on the App Store, similar to Xbox's Game Pass subscription. Though Apple is known mostly for iOS games, it plans to offer Apple Arcade games on MacOS and Apple TV as well. Your progress will transfer between platforms, so you can move from one screen to another to continue your progress.

So far, confirmed development partners include Sega, Konami, Disney, Sumo Digital, and Cartoon Network, among others, and more than 100 exclusive games will become part of the service. Additional games will also be added "all the time," the company said, although an exact cadence for new releases was not shared.

Apple went on to state that every game would be playable offline, while future game updates and DLC would be included at no extra cost. Apple Arcade will have its own tab on the App Store, and the games will be free of ads and microtransactions.

Apple Arcade will be available in 150 countries "this fall." One key bit of information--how much it will cost--has not yet been shared. Apple says pricing and more details are still to come.

During the event, we got a brief look at a few of the games coming to the service, with more being confirmed afterward in a press release. Among the confirmed games are Sonic Racing, Lego Brawls, Oceanhorn 2, Overland, Fantasian (from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi), and Beyond the Steel Sky (which is being worked on by Dave Gibbons of Watchmen fame). We also got a list of Apple Arcade developers and publishers, including names like Lego, Disney, Sega, and Konami.

Apple says it will be "contributing to the development costs and working closely with creators to bring the games to life," suggesting it will do more than just pay developers for their games to be included.

"The App Store is the world's biggest and most successful game platform. Now we are going to take games even further with Apple Arcade, the first game subscription service for mobile, desktop and the living room," said Apple marking boss Phil Schiller. "We are working with some of the most innovative game developers in the world to create over 100 new and exclusive games to play across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Apple Arcade games will be great for families, respect user privacy and will not have ads or require any additional purchases. We think players of all ages are going to love Apple Arcade."

Unlike the recently announced Google Stadia, or PlayStation Now and Microsoft's xCloud, Apple's service is not cloud-based. The company also unveiled its new Apple TV+ service and a variety of exclusive original shows.

As I say for every Apple product and service: Screw you Apple. You'll never get a cent of my money.

"...all about giving developers the freedom to come up with really interesting ideas that could never have been done by the mainstream!"

Um, what? If by "mainstream" they mean AAA titles, then sure. But if they mean console and PC market, then...what!? The last few years have been the best years for indie titles and even B titles that pushed the boundaries of "well this is new" and ushered in loads of new, innovative and fun experiences. I didn't see a single title that Apple Arcade showcased that wasn't already done "by the mainstream".

Try to tone down the PR market-speak a bit more next time Apple. I know that might be hard for you, but don't treat gamers like practically every other company in the gaming space nowadays. We aren't (all) idiots.

These games as a service sound like they're going to be made up of mostly shovelware.

@Seymour47: And a pretty popular one too. It has more apps than most smart tv devices. But price does not help them grow on Market Share. For many it’s easier to just buy a fire stick or Chromecast. Then again, this is Apple and it’s pricing decisions have never made sense in spite of turning large profit every year.

I literally can't think of anybody that would use this. Maybe if they put it on other devices besides Apple devices. I like that Apple updates their OS's so every phone and iPad functions the same, ect... But I hate how closed off Apple is to other products. For example, this would be a good built-in app for TV's.

A subscription to a collection of gamings worst trash? YES!!! Maybe they'll have Diablo Immortal.

So Apple who famously sued Samsung for plagiarising it's mobile telephone functions now decides to get in on the game subscription service. Corporate hypocrisy.

I am surprised it took this long to implement this service. Not that I care. The only mobile game I play is XCOM: EW on iPhone and iPad, because you can never have enough XCOM.

I hear they pay devs based on how long users play the games.

Not only is paying devs by how long users play games TERRIBLE for developers, it also grants extreme financial incentive for devs to make their games as predatory as possible, so it's hazardous for users too.

@Daian: A lot less work goes into optimizing Apple apps because they have the same OS on all their devices, where Android is so fragmented with manufacturers not updating their devices regularly.

I dislike Apple, but I also hate waiting for updates on Android.

@Daian: What do you mean by predatory? There won't be microtransactions. I do agree this isn't the best way to pay developers. I'm not sure how well it's going to work out on GamePass, though at least there people can buy the games if they want.

@darkelf83: there are ways to design games to take advance of people with addictive personalities, Activision had a research division for this purpose to implement it into Destiny for example. On top of that they can stretch things out to keep playing times longer, such as save/load times, slow movement and/or long distances between activities and so on.

@Daian: Correct! It's confirmed that developers will get paid based on time played. So devs could easily release games with lengthy cutscenes and loading screens, boring dialogues, etc

@darkelf83: there's going to be DLC. It's just included in the service. So they can IV drip content just like a non-subscription game. Not sure if that counts as predatory or not, but it's a content distribution model some might question

Absolutely brilliant, offline mode, as long as theres iso files, I say welcome to the community apple bots.

I wonder if they can be played on windows wine, or Linux re-engineered.

@lorddaggeroff: Offline is great, but don't expect anything remotely connected to an Apple service to be available on other platforms if they can help it. Apple is all about giving you choice: the choice to do only what Apple says, when they say it.

@icelandichossi: Problem is they have millions to lose and won't care. Gamers will be the ones to lose out the biggest. Mostly with Google, if you have can buy the games and lose them when Google decides to ditch it like most of their other side projects.

@darkelf83: Given the number of developers and publishers that are working with this, this also means that there'll be less resources towards making games for the 'core' gaming base as well as further enticements of these 'partners' to go down the mobile/GaaS-focused approach to gaming.

Not cloud based seems odd. It has to have some cloud component, so I expect this is really about rendering locally. So you still are going to be limited by your local hardware, so it will look a bit different on every device, but no remote control lag. Hmm sounds interesting but wondering about the details...especially how it will deal with massively different hardware.
