Apex Legends Hits Big Milestones Within Hours Of Release

The battle royale game has hit the ground running.

Apex Legends, the new battle royale game just announces and released by the makers of Titanfall, is off to a fast start. Studio head Vince Zampella announced that the game reached 1 million unique players in under eight hours. Zampella said he is "so overwhelmed" by the news. [Update: In a conference call with investors on Tuesday, just a day after release, EA now says the game has reached 2.5 million unique players and has seen 600,000 concurrent players.]

"Thank you so much for showing up and being part of this with Respawn you are amazing!!" Zampella said with a celebratory image.

Now Playing: Apex Legends Battle Royale Co-op Gameplay Live

Apex Legends, which is set in the Titanfall universe but doesn't feature the franchise's trademark Titans or wall-running, was announced and released today, February 4, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. On the subject of wall-running, Zampella said it "wasn't as fun and balanced." But he did tease that Respawn will "try new stuff" as the game's life goes on.

Apex Legends will use the games-as-a-service model through which Respawn will continue to update, grow, and improve the game over time. The game will have a Fortnite-style battle pass with seasons' worth of content to unlock over time.

I would love to see Respawn find success again. Titanfall at the beginning of this gen sold very well, but Titanfall 2 did not do well at all sales wise. They seem to have unique concepts and ideas, lets just hope they don't get swallowed up.

Wish they did a normal TF3 instead of this BR crap. I played one match yesterday and it seems fine, but BR is kind of played out for me at the moment. I wanted a new arcadey type FPS like the first Titanfall and TF2 were.

Remember, folks, they said all the purchases are purely cosmetic and then claimed you could buy new heroes and stuff in the same announcement. They also clearly played on Titanfall fans by using the Apex name in the title.

This is one of the most brazen EA marketing campaigns I've ever seen. It's just one big lie.

@Barighm: EA buys Respawn, cancels Titanfall 3, which was in development for a 2018 release, and pushes this BR, loot box garbage on them. This makes me feel for all of the people at Respawn that were working hard to get 3 out.

@Thanatos2k: Doesn’t matter why it flopped. And that’s no guarantee that it would have been a hit if released at another time. Plenty of good games fail. Sales are sales and there was no legit reason to fund TF3.

@Thanatos2k: Not to EA. A failure is a failure. And you don't fund a sequel to a failure. Unless you think there's some idiot at EA willing to take the blame for it.

This doesn't mean much. People are curious and will flock to it in a short amount of time. But they can leave just as fast.

@PETERAKO: exactly. Look at what happened with turtle rock studios/2k games when they bragged about numbers when evolve went f2p. It's a good start though because if it started with low numbers then they could've ended up being the next lawbreakers, but I doubt that would've happened because Nexon wouldn't have considered buying them otherwise.

Titanfall 2 had a really good single player story mode(mp was without question fun too) but it sold poorly coz EA fcuked it up by releasing it midst under other heavy hitters.

Respawns next game is multiplayer only and no word about TF3...coinsidence?

@sladakrobot: I bought a copy just to support the addition of the campaign. As for TF3:

'So those are the main facts - but why did we only hear about Apex Legends at the last possible minute before launch?

"Our desire is to be completely open and transparent with our player base, and part of that expands to how we talk about problems, and we understand this game is gonna have a sceptical audience," McCoy told me.

"There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it's a fad, the world thinks we're making Titanfall 3 and we're not - this is what we're making.

"To try and convince a sceptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we're just like 'let the game speak for itself' - it's the most powerful antidote to potential problems.

"We're doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it's not Titanfall 3. It's the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that - let's just ship the game and let players play."

It's a surprisingly open response. But then, in the context of what happened with Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Apex Legends' release with the bare minimum of marketing makes sense. Respawn simply want the game to speak for itself, McCoy says.

McCoy's answer also confirms what many already suspected: Titanfall 3 isn't in development, and Apex Legends is its current Titanfall focus. (Respawn is also working on Jedi: Fallen Order, an under-wraps Star Wars game it briefly announced last year.)

Back in fall 2017, a Respawn source told Kotaku's Jason Schreier "Titanfall 3 was well into development" and would release by the end of 2018. The reason for the hurry was that the modified version of Valve's Source engine (used by the previous Titanfall games and reportedly also Apex Legends) - "was starting to feel dated", and "Titanfall 3 might not feel or look as good if it came out too much later" - which, clearly, it did not.

This fits with what McCoy explained to me: that progress towards Apex Legends began after Titanfall 2, when the developer experimented with battle royale, "decided this wasn't going to be a mode", and chose to make Apex Legends "a game on its own". It certainly feels like Apex Legends could have been a battle royale mode for Titanfall 3.'

@sladakrobot: I still believe that release date was done deliberately to force a buy out. Like Titanfall 2's sales were worse than Titanfall 1 which was an Xbox exclusive.
