An Update on Star Wars Battlefront 3 Fan Remake and Some New Images

"Galaxy in Turmoil" continues.

The fan remake of Star Wars Battlefront III, the controversial, ill-fated Star Wars shooter that was in development at Free Radical before being canceled, continues to move forward. The team of Star Wars fans behind the unlicensed game, Frontwire Studios, today hosted a new livestream where they talked more about their attempts to revive and remake the game as part of a PC project called "Galaxy in Turmoil."

No Caption Provided

During the stream, the developers shared new work-in-progress images and cleared up a few points of potential confusion. First, they stressed that Galaxy in Turmoil will be a free game when it is eventually released. This is because the team feels like fans deserved to get Star Wars Battlefront III years ago before it was canceled. Additionally, from a business perspective, this may keep it off Disney legal team's radar, for now at least.

The game is of course inspired by Battlefront III, but its assets were built from the ground up, the developers said. However, they also explained they plan to use John Williams' score, which could lead to some legal issues, we'd imagine.

During the stream, the developers said if Disney sends them a cease and desist order, they will shut down the project right away. They said they would be "shocked" if Disney was not aware of the project. Additionally, they said they would contact Disney in the future to talk about how they can go about ensuring the project does not get shut down.

It was also announced during the event that Frontwire, as of Friday morning, is now an official, registered company.

Check out the bullet point list below for some other takeaways from the stream, while you can click through the images in the gallery above to see some shots that were revealed today.

  • Game runs on Unreal Engine 4
  • Undecided about split-screen.
  • Don't expect it on Steam, since it's an unlicensed game.
  • Game is in pre-alpha currently; all plans are subject to change.
  • All classic Battlefront game modes will be available, while Frontwire is creating a new mode designed around competitive play.
  • Matches will be 32v32 players; AI will fill in for players who drop out mid-match.
  • Will include original Battlefront III maps and some new ones.
  • Support for Battlefield II maps it to be determined; could be added as DLC.
  • Development won't end at 1.0 release; more content will be added later.
  • Will include multiplayer because "it's not Battlefront without multiplayer."
  • Mod support could come after launch.
  • Developers are looking at all eras of Star Wars; fans can add their own content with mods.
  • No Star Cards like DICE's new Battlefront.
  • There will be pickups for things like health packs and ammo drops.
  • No health generation.
  • Aims to be faithful to the original Battlefront games.
  • Some maps have a day/night cycle.
  • Frontwire hopes to make a new IP after releasing Galaxy in Turmoil.
  • A video will be released on May 4, Stars War Day, to hype the Battlefront III remake.

The remake's developers include TheDarkSithLord, ColeT2014, CoolJedy, Corra_Ashu, and Dinozavr. Frontwire is also inviting people with development experience to help out.

Despite numerous and detailed evidence about its existence and development, LucasArts never actually confirmed that Battlefront III was in fact in production. The game has long been the subject of much rumor, speculation, and head-butting.

In January this year, gameplay footage stemming from what appeared to be a leaked prototype version of Battlefront III emerged online.

"After a lot of work I managed to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront III and wanted to share the infamous canceled game that I'm sure many of you wanted to play," the person who leaked the footage said at the time. "I know not everyone will get the chance to play this immediately, but over time I expect the modding community to be able to change that."

That's now exactly what's happening.

EA launched a new Star Wars Battlefront game in November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC--it was a big, big hit. Multiple sequels are apparently also on the way.

Hard to have faith in this project. Why would they even be showing it off right now? It just doesn't look good yet, which doesn't help their case.

These two statements just blow me away...

"First, they stressed that Galaxy in Turmoil will be a free game when it is eventually released. This is because the team feels like fans deserved to get Star Wars Battlefront III years ago before it was canceled. Additionally, from a business perspective, this may keep it off Disney legal team's radar, for now at least."

"they said they would contact Disney in the future to talk about how they can go about ensuring the project does not get shut down."

It doesn't make any sense. Disney isn't going to let you give away a free Star Wars game. If they allow these guys to continue, it would be because Disney has faith in the overall quality of the game. If they have faith in the quality, they would SELL IT.

@PS2fweak: If these guys sell something with the Star Wars license, then Disney has grounds to sue them into oblivion.

@BruceWayneJr: Thats not how copyright works. Copyrights are about protecting an I.P holders ability to make money, not about preventing other people from making money off an I.P. If Disney or EA can convince a judge that the project will hurt their ability to make a profit out of future games they will win damages.

I hope this doesn't get shut down, I mean, they're doing it for free and it would no doubt please tons of fans of both Star Wars and the original Battlefront. It would just be cruel at this point.

Are devs not learning what happened to the private server of WoW or hell literally every god damn fan made game that has been canned. Seriously it's like the derp lvl of these people is beyond a lvl of dumb.

It doesn't matter if you are making the game free, you're using a IP owned by someone else and that alone is gonna piss them off.

@Ballroompirate: There is a huge difference between a WoW private server and this. They are not stealing anything. Not even the name. The big problem I see so far is the soundtrack. That can create issues.

I really hope they succeed with this.

@TheFroggynator: Learn what a copyright/trademark IP is then comeback. It doesn't matter that the game is F2P, it's still using Star Wars and it's "properties" (as in everything Star War is owned by Disney) from said IP.

Do you know what a licensing fee is?, I imagine you don't cause you seem pretty daft and already don't know about copyright/trademark IP's. The only way these devs could get away with making this game is paying a licensing fee to Disney which they haven't.

It's doesn't matter that the game is f2p, it doesn't matter that they are using their own codes and using UE4, what does matter is they are using properties aka characters and events THAT ARE OWNED BY DISNEY.

The only way they could get away with it is if they got a verbal/contract go ahead from Disney or they were using a mod support tool that you see Blizzard and Bethesda put into their games. That's why you can see Warcraft 3 playing on SC2 tool kits cause Blizzard ALLOWS people to use a creation tool for that game, same thing can be said for Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

@TheFroggynator: Ea reportedly spent hundreds of millions just to obtain a exclusive liscense to make Star Wars games for ten years. Ea and Disney would be well within their rights to send a cease and desist.

@Barighm: If this will not succeed, it will not make me wrong. I just said that there is a difference between a WoW private server, which is piracy 1.0.1, and this game which supposedly will have all assets build from the ground up, they use a different name, and they only want to use the music (which is a bad idea in my view).

I don't know if they'll pull it through, chances are slim, but I still hope they will. You just have to watch the alpha footage that's on YouTube to know that this would have been one of the best Star Wars games ever, and that EA's Battlefront is a joke.

That quote made me think it was completely their original work ( the 3d assets, textures, etc ).

Here's a little more constructive comment, if these guys really liked Battlefront so much why not make their own game like that??

generic Sci-Fi setting, land and space battles, customizable vehicles, customizable player characters instead of picking from set models of a class you create your own characters for each class soldier, medic, sniper, demolitions & support as well as powerful hero classes [which would be set models] even weapons could be customized and maybe instead of capturing set points you capture strategic areas like the guard post, the command center, forward command post, GQ etc by literally going there, taking out whoever's guarding it and holding it for a set time, have other modes in the game other than simply battle, have races on land and in space, have target practice and other training modes where you can improve shooting and other aspects and gain perks......

there's a ton one can do in the spirit of Battlefront without being copyrighted work and running the risk of being shut down....you could even do nods to SW if that;s your thing like set a scene a certain way or a certain phrase that someone says or even literally have an object in the world that is a prop from SW like a droid or lightsaber or ship etc......lots of ways to tip your hat without getting into hot water....

look at Halo, obviously they were inspired by Aliens but instead of run the risk of being sued they made some aesthetic very similar to how the Colonial Marines looked but went way their own way and built their own universe and Halo was very original....space marines aren't that unique but some of the aliens and themes in the game kinda are, how it's all collected is very unique....that's what I mean, be inspired but do your own thing.....

@darthrevenx: My thoughts exactly. If you already have the resources to build assets from the ground up, why would you opt for ripping off the design of some other franchise ( Start Wars ) instead of making your own lore and setting and call it "Inspired by" or the "spiritual successor" of Battlefront. You could even call it Warfront or something.

These guys are just looking to get shut down.

Awesome, good luck to them. Glad there are still people out there who are devoted to making games without trying to bleed out the little guy, people who make games just for people to play together and enjoy. I mean this game is looking to have more content that the new battlefront game and for zero dollars. EA is a joke.

Honestly I've given up on Star Wars, with Mas Effect who needs SW???? FFS they didn't even care enough about their own damn lore to protect it and SW was one of the only franchises who accepted 90% of the lore and extended stuff others built up and it wasn't until more recently that george started ruining some of the lore and denting some aspects outright cus reasons.....of course one could point at the prequels as ruining it too but extended universe had stories that explained some of the worst aspects of the prequels and gave things more clarity.....Labyrinth Of Evil is one you should read....but this generation doesn't know what a book is, what I gotta turn pages?? eww....

rant aside, I'll wait for a real game like Mass Effect Andromeda......

@Barighm: Andromeda is gonna be big.....either way a big talking point but it could blow the other Mass Effect game away or not....i doubt it'll fail though....and EA won't just shut it down then and there, they would however shut down a 7'th game if games 4-6 fail to do anything which I don't see happening, DA2 was a flop, DAI redeemed the Dragon Age name, if EA was that petty to can a IP for 1 failure then the mere thought of Andromeda would have been shot down by now.....

well would you look at that! Clone Wars content! this game is shaping up to be vastly superior to EA's shitty attempt at the series in every way! I will keep my eye on this game! hope it includes the single player modes from past games! also GameSpot idk if you have been under a rock, but EA's shitty Battlefront was NOT a hit. very mixed reviews from critics and far worse reviews from consumers, as well as the fact that the online communities across all platforms are dwindling does not make it a "hit". get your facts straight next time.
