Just weeks after Nvidia announced its $3000 GTX Titan Z graphics card, competing company AMD is here with a gaming-related announcement of its own. The company today officially announced the AMD Radeon R9 295X2, which the semiconductor outfit calls the "world's fastest" GPU.

No Caption Provided

The liquid-cooled GPU features 11.5 TFLOPS of compute power, 4K display support, and 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Though it is very powerful, the Radeon R9 295X2 is a bit of a power hog, running at 500 watts. Overall, the card is "built for performance, finished for looks, and loaded with features," AMD says.

The Radeon R9 295X2 launches worldwide April 21. It will sell for $1500 through AMD and its retail partners. Check out the graph below for a full spec breakdown for the GPU.

The 295x2 was at least priced quite fairly. It performs remarkably well and the scaling for multi GPU AMD configurations are getting MUCH better. The compute performance is also much better than expected. Only problem lies in the power consumption. You can have a microwave, vacuum cleaner and toaster running with the same current going out O_O.

But the 295x2 can't compute with double precision.

you people need to understand that while these cards make no sense even from an enthusiast consumers point of view, the point is to have the crown of the fastest single-slot card in the world. NVIDIA and AMD are just competing against each other with these.

The Tech Report already did a review from this card and the conclusion was that two GTX 780 Ti in SLI are better than this one.

I bet stupid miners gonna love this. If they can afford It...with all their bitcoins.

Hey, let them do what they love!

And yeah, SLI 780 TI's is indeed a monster rig by any standards... and considering NVIDIA has G-sync and a couple of other things going for it, at the same price point I think NVIDIA will still out-compete the red team for the foreseeable future.

Nice. While Xbone and PS4 fights on the console side for better features, Nvidia and AMD fights on the PC side. Winner: Gamers.

Yet another GPU product aimed at attracting mindless PC fanboy sheep who will no doubt fall for the trap of spending nearly 1500$ to get another 3-4 fps. Way to go GPU manufacturers... keep butchering these sheep.

Things like overclocking your GPU get you an extra 3-4fps.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You seem to expect a lot out of these companies, when the truth is industry is doing everything they can with what they have been given. Until you understand field effect transistors and process design and p-type and n-type semiconductors and dielectric gates and process design... you probably shouldn't be blabbing your mouth about "adding more cores" or adding more memory. The truth is, the ideas are there, but the technology is going as fast as it can. Materials can be designed to fit 10-13 billion transistors on a 20 nm process (no small feat) and can carry an ENORMOUS amount of charge mobility, approaching 60-70 cm/V*s. However, these materials are not yet manufactured at stable, ambient operable levels. You COULD run these technologies... but they would degrade in a matter of hours of use to the point that it would be just as unusable as not having it in the first place, unless of course you could afford to cool your cards at -50 degrees C. Regardless of what you think, this product by AMD is absolutely an amazing feat of engineering, regardless of price and what flawed concept of resources and innovative research you have.

Bottom line is this; if the product can be produced at a relatively minimal cost of production yet be optimized for ambient temperatures and be stable enough and obtain maximal performance... it WOULD be on the market. These technologies simply are not ready to hit mainstream yet. In time, my friend, in time. Just be patient :)

You clearly never took a business course. Without more competitors these companies just squeeze every last penny out of their products before spending any on innovation. Business 101.

But so what, you can overclock the $3k Titan nearly 10mhz over specs resulting in 1 extra fps over $1500 AMD.. that way WOW runs at 321 instead of 320fps...

so that makes the AMD R9 - Fail. Says every pc elitist

Yeah excess stuff like this kinda gags me, but there is a market place for it, and by developing cards like this in all of its extreme helps to pave the road for future tech, who knows, in 8 years this will probably be standard in tablets.

<< LINK REMOVED >> These aren't totally PR cards you guys know, there is a big market for dual graphics - The up&coming 4k market (since samsung just launched a $700 4k monitor with 10 bit color, one could say the 4k revolution has now officially begun)

Oh, and I have no idea why your speaking for "every pc elitist" but I'm a PC elitist and I think god every day AMD exists, remember that whole $200 dollar price drop from Nvidia instantly? and they're STILL pricier than AMD.

Pfft! The electricity bill from those 2 radeons will eclipse your savings in 3 years. Nvidia take about 1/2 the power to run, require far less cooling, and with the new maxwell architecture AMD will be playing catchup for speed and performance for a decade. GCN is a horribly inferior architecture and won't survive in the GPGPU or gaming markets past 2018.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I would agree with that if Nvidia's cost was 10x physx's worth, I'm fine with paying higher prices, but theres a limit, and NVIDIA crossed that with the gtx 700-series (it was AMD that caused NVIDIA to commit to an instant $200 price drop on the 700-series btw)

Ok, let me explain why Valve's steam machine COULD BE a good idea (depends on how they go about doing it, so I wont commit to "will be" yet) -

1. Small Form Factor-

The whole craze with amazon fire TV, apple TV, Xbox, and PS (plus google and all them will soon do something as well) is to "take over" your living room, that's a big part of where the marketing is going right now, and Valve is smart to head in that direction.

2. Consoles, believe it or not, were actually killing out the PC gaming industry -

This was a big deal around the time of Xbox 360 and PS4's launch, PC gaming was outrageously expensive (a big reason why I'm always so quick to defend AMD - competition drops prices) but because Microsoft and Sony bought in mass bulk and standardized the hardware, it allowed them to get huge discounts, then they were also able to take a loss on the items (for a while) to lower the prices even more, as they would be making money on games, so more gamers in the market with lower prices = more games coming out to satisfy them (it worked, but xbox 360 and ps4 yielded a total loss last gen because they took too much of a loss of the hardware).

That isn't to say that PC gaming is by any means "fucked" now, but if something isn't done to appeal to more casual consumers, it will only be a matter of time before it is fucked. It's not about "there will always be gamers in the PC market" it's about the most viable "install base" for game developers to make games on. If a company wants to maximize profits, it develops for a console, if that console has a huge install base (like Xbox 360's 30+ million, for example) then a company will make the game for Xbox 360, but then microsoft says "hey, if you make it EXCLUSIVE, we'll only take 5% of sales, instead of 30%" and the company takes a look and realizes that saving 25% of that royalty, plus the savings of not having to port the game to PC, means going console exclusive is more profitable. This is the reason we have "console exlusive" games, and if the market kept going like that, then valve would have very few games to make money on with Steam.

3. Steam Controller -

Making a universal controller for the PC was the smartest idea valve ever came up with. Not only is the market for that extremely huge, but the costs associated with creating something as in-demand as a controller are super low (it costs like, $15 to make the xbox one controller, they sell it for $59, and millions buy it, some people even buy 2, or 3!)

4. SteamOS -

Believe it or not I'm not actually opposed to this, for one thing, Linux does indeed run games with significantly better performance than windows (Microsoft recently commented that it agrees, and that they're working on a solution) but that's not the biggest deal. There were crazy rumors that Microsoft was planning on forcing all games on it's platform to be downloaded through the windows store, I initially said - thats bogus, microsoft would never do something that stupid but then I remembered DRM. Also, if it doesnt do it, it will definetly use the windows store feature to compete with Steam, and it will come built in to your computer and with onedrive support, it might also come with free copies of the games you by on your xbox and/or offer streaming support. Thus, steam needs to compete fast.

The make or break factor here is one thing - the producers of the Steam Machine. Fragmenting the development and not specifying MINIMUM specs at least means they won't be able to get the two benefits consoles enjoyed - bulk pricing passed on to the consumer, and a specific set of specs for developers to use when making their games (in this case it would be minimums, since obviously I wouldn't want steam to lower itself into making non-upgradable low tier consoles)
