Amazon Studios is reportedly making moves to acquire The Tomorrow War, an upcoming sci-fi military action film directed by Chris McKay. According to Variety, although a sale has not yet been finalized and financial terms have yet to be determined, the asking price could be in the neighborhood of roughly $200 million.

Given Amazon's aggressive pursuit of acquiring big name movies like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Coming 2 America, the streaming platform's chances seem good to land this film as well. The Tomorrow War is set in the near future and focuses on humanity's war against an invading alien force. The winning strategy humanity bets on is a new ability to draft soldiers from the past.

The film's cast includes Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Betty Gilpin (Glow), JK Simmons (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Little Miss Sunshine). The film will be McKay's first foray into live-action directing, although his resume to date is impressive with directing work that includes The Lego Movie and Robot Chicken. McKay directs a script from Zach Dean (Deadfall, 24 Hours to Live).

The film was initially scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2021--but it's anyone's guess if those plans will still hold. The film also marks another collaboration between McKay and Pratt from The Lego Movie. Pratt, who has come a long way from his days in Parks and Recreation, has gone from leading man to not being in the news to recently becoming an unsavory meme.
