Amazon reveals tower defense/shooter hybrid Sev Zero for its new Fire TV streaming box

Available exclusively through Amazon's new Fire TV set-top box; other games available for the new platform include Minecraft and NBA 2K14.

The first Amazon Fire TV-exclusive game is Sev Zero, a tower defense/third-person shooter hybrid developed internally by Amazon Game Studios.

Amazon announced the game today during a media event in New York City where it officially took the wraps off the $99 Amazon Fire TV set-top box. It will sell for $7, though it's included for free with the purchase of a $40 Amazon Fire Controller.

In Sev Zero, you start in tower defense mode to build your towers, and then you beam down to the shooter mode to go head-to-head with alien enemies.

Though Sev Zero is exclusive to Amazon Fire TV, players can team up with friends through a game called Sev Zero: Air Support available on Kindle Fire. You can read more about Sev Zero on Amazon's website.

Sev Zero is one of thousands of games available today for Amazon Fire TV. Other big-name games includes contemporary titles like Deus Ex: The Fall, Asphalt 8, and NBA 2K14, as well as classics like games from the Sonic the Hedgehog and Tetris franchises.

You can check out the full list of Amazon Fire TV games at the company's website.

At $140 ($100 for console, $40 for controller) it's an impulse buy for me.

Maybe, though, this is just a first step to something bigger. Amazon could become a legit publisher/digital retailer, a la Steam. Their app is already on X1 and PS.... Sure, this set top box and this game are terribly uninteresting, but what if they're just testing the waters to see if they want to get into the AAA business? That might not be a bad thing.....

@olddadgamer why do they have to target the AAA business? There is a lot of money to be made, from games of this quality sold to the huge mass market of casual gamers.

Because another company getting into the AAA market is what we need as gamers, especially after the attempted molestation of our consumer rights by the great M$. Having more options is a good thing.

Thats more of a personal desire than an actual reason why anyone should attempt to make a high-budget game. A media device with the capability to play games usually doesn't garner enough attention from those willing to spend $60 on a game.

If their desire is to make "AAA" games, they are testing the wrong market.

amazon needs to stick to doing what they do best. they're amazing at it, there's no need for them to humiliate themselves here.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You mean business? Because they're pretty kickass at business. Amazon has grown huge since their beginning days of selling books. You have to remember that every business venture, even gaming, starts somewhere. Amazon may not have been born solely for the gaming industry, but there's no reason why they can't succeed in it. They have business savvy, they may very well be able to pull it off.

@lostmyaccount actually it does look pretty cool, for $7 on a $99 device not really a bad deal for a casual gamer.

This thing is a piece of garbage, it lacks the basics such as Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Crunchyroll. Failure TV Shit Box.

Someone should have told them that playing on a handheld screen and a TV at the same time is a terrible idea. See Wii-U.

I have a Wii U and have absolutely no problems looking at the controller while playing a game on the TV. I guess you never played Wind Waker HD, Batman: Arkham Origins, or Zombie U.

So much gimmicky shit. As long as core PC games still exists, real gaming will too. Certain consoles can derive whatever watered down inspiration they want from that -- but this stuff in the article above? ... ugh.

Which actually, was a very good game! (Hence my profile picture). It just had little to no marketing :/

@Bellum_Sacrum And Sony's game box now has to face reality it doesn't have the architecture to compete in the now inevitable trend of all-in-one TV and game devices. I Guess Microsoft wasn't so far off with the Xbox One were they?

@Tomcat2007 Everybody I know that has an XB1 or intends to buy one has no intentions of hooking up cable to it. They will do the same thing they do with the 360 and that's watch Netflix because their gaming console is not on the main tv where the cable box is. (and its quite a few people) and of course you can do the same thing with a PS3 and PS4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i think that will change as consumers get accustomed more to these TV streaming devices that are doing more and more including gaming. Right now the next-gen console buyers are the hardcore gamers and early adopters but as the old consoles retire and the rest of the mass market starts to choose a new console they will want the console to have more features than just gaming, and integration with their cable service may be one of them.

If it's an open hackable bit of kit like most android platforms I might pick one up, but I'll wait until hardware reviews come in. The market is already overflowing with cheap poorly made tat, Android Mini PC's aren't exactly a rarity but good ones that are well put together are few and far between.

There is zero reason streaming-gaming and console-gaming cannot coexist.

That list is literally all mobile apps. There'll only be a handful of games that you'll sit down and play a while by the looks of it.

Whats the target market here? Cant be core gamers since theres already three main consoles with exclusive software. Seems like a waste of time in my opinion. If there are any first parties that manage to secure a spot on the Amazon "thing", then maybe ill look into picking one up, but right now it seems to be another Ouya
