Update: Amazon and Twitch have officially announced the deal, which will see Amazon purchase all outstanding shares of Twitch for roughly $970 million in cash. The deal has been approved by Twitch's shareholders and should be completed sometime later this year.

In a message addressed to the Twitch community, CEO Emmett Shear wrote, "We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We're keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon's support we'll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

"I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you've created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they'd get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much. It's dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch, thank you for coming with us."

Original Story: Despite a pair of reports earlier this year suggesting that Google--through its YouTube subsidiary--would acquire Twitch, new reports state it is instead Amazon that will purchase the game streaming site.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon has agreed to a deal that will see it acquire Twitch for $1 billion. This follows an early report from The Information which stated that the deal could be announced soon (the WSJ says official word may come today), but that it was unclear if anything had yet to be signed.

This comes as a surprise given that YouTube was widely believed to be the site's buyer. Variety reported in May that it would acquire Twitch for $1 billion, a prospect that was reinforced by a VentureBeat report last month. Although neither of the companies involved had officially addressed the possibility, it was presumed to be on the verge of completion when Twitch recently began implementing the YouTube-like policy of automatically muting videos containing copyrighted audio earlier this month. The WSJ's sources indicate talks between Google and Twitch have "cooled" as of late.

Twitch is the largest live-streaming website in the United States by a wide margin, according to a report released this spring, and has expanded into non-gaming ventures, like streaming concerts. Amazon has become aggressive about gaining a foothold in the video game industry, attracting talent like the designers of Portal and Far Cry and purchasing Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games.

GameSpot has contacted both Amazon and Twitch and will report back with anything we learn.

Indeed, better Amazon than Google.

On the other hand, I can already see this: Twitch content creators have to put up with Amazon ads for game products which they are featuring, e.g. widgets showing "related" products and sh*t.

If having to swallow a few ads from Amazon offering me the game I'm trying watch on Twitch means sticking it to Google, then so be it. Still annoyed at how Google handles licensing on Youtube, and I don't even post anything there. I could only imagine how annoying it must be for actual Youtubers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> it gets to a point where you have to boycott certain games to make room for 1s that you can Let's Play. I'm glad Amazon is buying Twitch, although the damage has been done with the new VoD content ID claims. But Amazon hopefully won't be as unnecessarily strict as Google.

Interesting... I just hope amazon doesn't start throwing ad sales every 10 minutes though. My only worry.

Google must have offered more than a billion but I figure Twitch did not want to be swallowed by the behemoth that is Google. It remains to be scene if Amazon is any better than Google but I think this is better for Twitch in the long run.

Get ready for a million Amazon ads every 5 minutes on Twitch.

<< LINK REMOVED >> On the plus side, Twitch only took the most tiny babystep possible towards compliance because if you watch the video / stream in an external player like VLC or if you shortly pause and resume right away when using the web player, it's not muted anymore.

I can live with that if it makes the music derpistry happy.

Besides, if Amazon overdoes the advertisements, they're back on my adblocker list and if they counter adblockers then I'll just abandon Twitch - if a majority of people leaves Twitch because of that, it's their turn to change in order to keep making a profit.

Their creators want to sell out.

With that said, don't believe that Hitbox's own creators won't sell out too.

Game streaming in America is pointless right now. Comcast is likely going to get their merger approved and then over 50% of the high speed market will have data caps for a service that can easily use 7 to 8GB of data per hour. At $10 per 50GB people could easily be paying an additional $50 to $70 per month for already overpriced internet in a household of four that also streams Netflix.

I love the idea but America needs to get its 'S' together in the high speed broadband market.

Lesser of two evils it seems. Amazon is like apple however, everything runs through them. Don't be surprised if soon twitch can only be streamed on the Amazon Fire devices only.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Really? That would make their purchase totally unnecessary. I'd think they would actually use this purchase to spread their services to other devices. So that would mean twitch wouldn't be gaming only anymore.

RIIIIIGHT, like there aren't Kindle apps for iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, Windows Phone, and Android even after the introduction of the Fire tablets, phone and TV. Same goes for Amazon Prime - works on a variety of devices and platforms even though Amazon has their own.
