Inside and Uncharted 4 are the best games of the year, hands down. Both 10/10 must-play-experiences in my book. I hope The Last Guardian lives up to the hype and can grab an award or two as well, if it ever fucking comes out. Ratchet & Clank should probably get an award for best platformer. certainly best remake. Final Fantasy XV, while it could be enjoyable, will probably not win any awards. I haven't seen anything groundbreaking about it thus far. Dead Rising 4 looks to be the funniest game of the year, if there's a category for that...

Shooters were pretty underwhelming this year honestly. Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 are fun but nothing really groundbreaking there either. Here's hoping we get a FPS next year that really innovates instead of refines what's already been done before, or in the case of CoD: Infinite Warfare, makes it worse.

Not the best year for gaming, 2016. There's even an expansion running as best RPG game. It seems Uncharted is ruling unchallenged this year...

@MigGui: Not the best, but not a bad year either. While not many games shined, a lot were very solid installments. Doom, Battlefield, Watch Dogs, Overwatch, Dishonored, all very good games, but none of them goty contenders.

@livedreamplay: Since when? Last I checked. Bayonetta 2 was the second most fun game of 2014. It shows that fast paced character fighting combo action games are still refreshing, most challenging, and fun today. It's the only genre of action that makes you feel like a badass.

@wushuknight25: What? Bayonetta 2 did well with the critics, but it was a commercial disaster. In the first month it barely sold 50k units in Japan and wasn't even in top 10 monthly games. Which for the first month is a disaster. Those games are good, I like them due to nostalgia, but they became outdated and people don't buy them anymore, that's why they don't make them anymore. :(

@livedreamplay: The fact that the game was critically acclaimed proves that the genre hasn't gotten outdated at all. Sales had nothing do it with it. More it's on Nintendo's fault for barely even advertising it. It was bad enough that it was exclusive for one console that is now currently dying, but there was Nintendo barely even showing the public about the game. There was only one TV spot in only one channel (Adult Swim) which even I didn't see. I went to my local Gamestop, Target, and Best Buy asking about the game, and they didn't know it was coming out 3 DAYS before release. These games aren't just good, They are FANTASTIC. How do you know people DON'T want to buy them anymore. Is there some type of survey that says people don't like fast-paced complex combo gameplay anymore? Since when?

@wushuknight25: Mate, do you really think the market cares about your explanations? Hard truth, it doesn't. Gaming companies won't focus on genres that are not bought by people just because the marketing behind said games wasn't done good enough. You don't need a survey to know that... A gaming company will look for interest, if Nintendo chose to not spend money advertising the game it automatically assumes it's not worthy, then if people don't flock towards the game and it has mediocre sales, then it strengthens the assumption that it's not worthy. If the sales are poor even after the game is critically acclaimed and gets great reviews, that just underlines their assumption even more. Just because you and a few others think those games are fantastic will not make the companies spend in that direction, they need sales, they need to see proof that they won't wast their money if they make those games. Btw, I also like those games, I'm not against them in any way, however you were wondering why they weren't made anymore, and this is sadly the hard truth :(

@livedreamplay: They need to care, because of this lack of awareness, care, and good promotion of these game is what is hurting the genre of itself, and it's what this current gen is lacking hugely on: Diversity. I mean Jesus, this the worst nominee of action games I've ever seen on a big gaming site. Despite Odin's Sphere being a reinvent. I would say not putting it on this list is a huge insult to the genre.

"if Nintendo chose to not spend money advertising the game it automatically assumes it's not worthy"

Until the game scored 9s and 10s accross the board, THEN they started promoting it like hell, which was already too late. Just so you know, Nintendo sucks at advertising games that are not Pokemon, Smash Bros, Mario, and Zelda. This is the problem here. As these game you claimed are "outdated" has proven wrong as they are still top notch in quality. Everyone who has played Bayonetta 2 LOVED it. Not a single dislike. Bayonetta 2 is not only the greatest action game ever made, it's one of the best games of the past 10 years. Yet Nintendo did not have the guts to at least show that? They didn't show this game out to the public, nor why the game is amazing, but only the small group as if they assume we live in their mother's basement.

"If the sales are poor even after the game is critically acclaimed and gets great reviews, that just underlines their assumption even more."

This is less the fault of the public, and more to the publishers. As they assume character action games like Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta are too difficult to handle, they are "weird" and "too crazy," they don't take their stories seriously, and don't have generic stereotypical movie characters with a gun. But also the fact that most AAA companies ruled by people who don't know nor care about video games believe only COD or anything related is what sells since it makes the biggest money. So this type of action that was big back in the day is now niche. They barely even show people the game, and when they do, they have horrible players that button mash the same YYYY combo over and over and not dodge at obvious attacks. That can turn off many players thinking the game will be repetitive and dull until they're shown combo videos. This is why Nier Automata is doing very well right now. It's getting great advestisement, but they are also showing the gameplay's great potential. Gaining nothing but positive buzz and grabbing people's attention.

The only people who don't want it are the small minority, while many other would have no idea what the game is about because of the lack of support from the publisher.

If they need sales, they need to put just as much effort supporting these games as they did with Battlefield 1. It's not that hard.

@wushuknight25: I partially agree with you. I say partial because you say that the genre is dying because of the promotion issues, I say that the promotion issues are caused by the fact that it's dying.

Let's leave Bayonetta aside for a second and look from a different perspective. Why aren't other companies making/marketing games of this genre? Why? If there is so much interest, why won't they put as much effort into a game like this as they would into Battlefield 1? Is it because they don't like money? Especially now with this nieche market being so empty, why do they still choose other genres? I know why, because of the lack of interest. Why start developing and marketing a game and risk failing when you already know that a game like Battlefield will sell like hot cakes. If you have another, better explanation, I'm willing to hear it.

"If they need sales, they need to put just as much effort supporting these games as they did with Battlefield 1. It's not that hard." Why aren't they doing it then?

PS: I think Nier Automata will be an excellent game, but I think it will be mediocre in sales too. I may be wrong, but we'll see...

@livedreamplay: "Why aren't they doing it then?" I believe in this gen of gaming, stylish action games are now only believe to appeal to anime fans, and what people use the term today as "weaboos" when stylish action back in the day went it's for hardcore players. Publishers also have the mindset that these game doesn't "appeal to the WIDER AUDIENCE" fantasy instead of trying to introduce it to the wide audience. They also believe they are too complex for this generation of gaming, and too difficult for people to master the gameplay unlike 90% of the shooters that had flooded the market. They are more just scared of the fact that the game doesn't sell because it doesn't fit into the gaming world where Call of Duty, Battlefield, Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, many games that are Free Roam, FPS, TPS, Free to Play, Story driven games that are angsty, dark and gritty, realistic, dumb-down, and very slow gameplay dominate and make ALL the money. Hints why they don't want to promote stylish action game as much as they are video game and not "experiences," and people delude themselves thinking that's true (without even given them a chance), it's when they do give it a chance that they ask why they heard about them, so this whole thing about them not being interesting comes as an excuse. How are they NOT interesting? Considering they have 50x the variety of combat than shooters, far better gun mechanics than shooters (aim, shoot, cover, and reload is never as interesting as break dancing while shooting, using missiles launchers as police clubs, using a shotgun as nun chucks, and stacking bullets on top of eachother and on a armed weapon), faster, far more challenging, and have limitless amount of depth to keep players in the game. You say they don't matter due to sales (funny even though Bayonetta 2 was still nominated for best action game), but there has not been any real legitimate prove of that. In fact, in this generation ruled by FPS that are basically the same thing over and over again, having a stylish action game should be nothing but refreshing as they are so rare. What is it about the mechanics in stylistic action genre that makes this outdated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4_kYhWjl9w&t=105s but makes THIS now the new category of "action": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5twthWgkYCQ.

@wushuknight25: Not even close. This "publishers have the mindset" thing doesn't fly one bit. If the publishers smell money they go for it, if they think it doesn't apply to the wider audience it's because it doesn't, and they'd rather focus on games that do, rather than spending money with "trying to introduce it to the wide audience". And that's what I've been saying all along.

Also, I don't agree with "They also believe they are too complex for this generation of gaming", all genres have more complex and difficult games, and less complex and difficult games, yet the genre isn't excluded like it is in our case. People playing Candy Crush and Call of Duty didn't stop Bloodborne from having millions of sales and exceeding the expecations in both revenue and reviews.

"You say they don't matter due to sales but there has not been any real legitimate prove of that" Even what you said at the beginning, with publishers not believing it's worthy due to it not applying to the wider audience is exactly that. Why do you think that the publishers care whether or not it applies to the wider audience, obviously because of sales. This generation is ruled by FPS because people like this genre, even if they do things over and over, they enjoy it. You have better and more complex FPS games, you have dumbed down FPS games, each with their own but the bottom line is that the genre sells and the people are interested.

@wushuknight25: Rad. Sadly, after Ninja Gaiden black, that franchise has slipped a bunch. It would be great to see it get back on track. Hope Platinum makes another Bayonetta and dream of another Metal Gear Rising. Maybe From software will take a break from the Souls games. An Otogi remake or sequel would be awesome. I'd personally trade every shooter for a fast action game like these. Keep hope alive.

@wushuknight25: Dont post this kind of stuff around here, people will call it ''mindless button mashing'' then argue that Crap of Us is the best action/survival/adventure/RPG/puzzle/Racing/sport game ever created. that Naughty Dog are the best developpers and that Uncharted 47837583276576 deserves the movie of the year award.

They should bring back best game by console exclusive. They should bring back best DLC/expansion (so that stuff like Blood & Wine and WoW: Legion don't make it into best overall game). They should split the performances into male and female like it was in the past. They should get rid of the Game for Change award (because we ALL play games for political statements, don't we?). Art should be split into two categories like it was before (technical and artistic). Songs should be its own category again. It should become more "mainstream" and feel like any other awards show AND be back to TV broadcasting. That would tremendously improve the awards and make them feel more legitimate.

Didn't care for these lists, but it's all opinions. Though would have been better if they waited a little longer (Pokémon and Final Fantasy)

Dark Souls III, D00M, and Owlboy are my GotY so far.

The yearly popularity contest again. My favourite game this year by far is Deus Ex: mankind Divided, and I wish I had Battlefield 1. Don't really care about anything else this year. Roll on Zelda and god of war (hopefully) next year.

I didn't get a chance to play Uncharted 4 since I'm a PC gamer but from what i've seen it seems like a worthy opponent.
But my vote for GOTY goes to DOOM, thats the first game in years that i didn't have a single boring minute playing. I know it won't win but for me that's what matters most, how enjoyable it is.

Uncharted 4 easily GOTY followed up by Blood & Wine and Titanfall 2 for me.

Next year looks a LOT more exciting than this year though, just look at that most anticipated list...holy shit.

@IndySandbagTrik: Yeah...about that. No Man's Sky won the award for most anticipated game last year. So needless to say...

DOOM, all the way. I can't believe I found a game in this list where fun and gameplay is it's main premise.

Uncharted or Overwatch would be my guess for the GOTY award wouldn't complain with either winning it.

Uncharted is the best action-adventure game series ever :) And the 4th installment is the best of them all :)
