All Rainbow Six Siege DLC Maps Will Be Free

"We want players to stay with us for the long term."

In what is becoming a trend, Ubisoft on Wednesday announced that all post-launch DLC maps for Rainbow Six Siege will be offered for free. The developer also cleared up some confusion regarding the total number of maps available on day one and teased that it has even more expansion plans to announce later.

"At launch, Rainbow Six Siege will have 11 maps, playable both day or night, all using the full potential of our Real Blast destruction technology," the publisher said in a statement, "In addition, all post-launch maps will be downloadable for free. We want players to stay with us for the long term and have ambitious post-launch plans that we will detail at a later stage."

All DLC maps for monster-hunting game Evolve are also free. Meanwhile, 343 Industries has announced that it will launch at least 15 free DLC maps for Halo 5: Guardians by June 2016. In all cases, developers said they are making maps free to avoid dividing players into groups of those who do and do not own them. This has increasingly become a problem for shooters over the years.

Siege was originally slated to launch in October, but it was recently delayed to December for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game's upcoming beta, meanwhile, is still scheduled to begin on September 24. Sign-up details are available here.

Ubisoft has high hopes for Siege, as the publisher said back in May that the game has the potential to become the company's best-selling FPS ever, surpassing Far Cry 4. At the time, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the game's replayability "will be key to the game's success."

Still waiting on the beta, but free maps sounds like a step in the right direction.

This comment section is so pathetic. Company just announced FREE DLC on a game that will ship with 11 maps (a pretty standard amount) and people are still complaining. What does it take to satisfy you people (or at least get you to stop complaining)?

This is great, I'll actually pay them to have the Irish Special forces (Irish Army Ranger Wing) as DLC characters now

Free maps for a game that you spend $65 on maybe less if you get a deal... Or you could just you know release all the maps free any way because you know paid for it? Holy evil concept Batman! Oh wait Evolve did this and killed the game by making you pay for each character and monster or buying "Season Passes" Which just killed the game off, so yeah free maps doesn't help the game out if you're just going to charge for something else down the road.

DICE / EA (Battlefield) TAKE NOTE!! Are you listening???? This is how you do it!! Stop fragmenting the BF community with Premium / quarterly map packs which most people can't even play due to lack of servers because so many people don't have the post release content!

@gtstcactus: You seem to speak a lot in the name of everyone, while also pointing out that my opinion (below) is probably insignificant. I don't think there's anything to make you the representative of the gaming community. But I'll be fair, you nut, you do make a point.

@gtstcactus: Take Note? You do know that Evolve did this path and ruined the game with characters you have to pay for and new monster packs... They will charge for Maps or more characters down the road with Siege because they're greedy as hell. Also Battlefield 4 is still having Updates and free stuff even after they did all the DLC's they said they would do and yet still making new maps and content free.
"All post-launch maps will be downloadable for free" That means you will have to pay for more later down the road.

@nomadie: Do you have inside knowledge or something to backup the statement saying they will charge for maps & characters down the road etc?? Just because Turtle-Rock / 2K Games did one thing with Evolve and "ruined the game" doesn't mean Ubisoft or any other company is going to do the same with their games. There's little point in concerning ones self with what could maybe possibly happen.

As for BF4... So far they've dished out 1 free map (a night version of an existing map) and they have a couple of other night versions plus 1 other map.). This does nothing to fix the already fragmented BF community, nor does free camos or guns. What they are doing for BF4 now is irrelevant anyway... They've already screwed the pooch with the way they approach Premium and their paid for map packs.

@nomadie: I think what killed evolve is that It isn't easy to get into. I've only played the Alpha, but I imagine once it was released to everyone that once people started playing, no one understood they had a certain role to fulfill in completing the main objective. You can't do it by yourself and every class needs the others to create a formidable attack. They realized this after a few matches and quit playing. Meanwhile the handful left probably know exactly what they're doing or at least are able to carry out things with mediocre support or help out those who aren't keen on teamwork.

Good show, Ubi. I was on the fence about Siege, even after playing it at PAX, but as long as they don't screw anything else up, I'll buy this Day 1.

so many players hate this rubbish, u get the game home, excited to play with your friends online, put the disc in and get told to update, ok so you update, then you load up multiplayer excited and, u get told u have to download the free map packs, all 10 gigs, and all the excitement is gone, GONE! and u have to wait till tomorrow to play.

Screw this rubbish, i will wait for the complete edition, and so will many others, stop pulling these stunts on us, DLC is a scam, especially when its free because its trying to normalize this era of DLC.

Start putting the maps in with the game sooner otherwise your going to lose alot of loyal fans, thats if its not already too late.

@hotwog21: this is better than charging us for the map packs... Yes it would be good if they were included from the start... the current trend of post release content doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, so this is about as good as it's going to get..

@gtstcactus: we can choose to not support it and you watch, just like they backpeddled on DRM, the kinect, cross chat between 360 and bone, and then put in backward compatible, we can make them back peddle on DLC, and making it a thing of the past.

This will only be relevant if the game is at least slightly good, you know, between the level of quality where no one will play it after a short while, and the level of quality of... whatever popular fps is on right now. Counter Strike GO? We'll have to see if I'll stick around after the beta.

@ExoticCharm: Because COD is brainless running around shooting people, easy as can get. Siege is for people who want a challenge. A game that only gives you one life, is a slow paced and tense shooter , and focuses on team coordination.

@Attitude2000: i didnt say that, but if the game is any good 18months later get together and make some more maps, but the maps we are used to getting are made at the same time as the game so what im saying is stop with the with held content being release 2months later, and stop with the DLC because is really annoying getting home to play just to download 10 gig, just put it all on one disc and DLC thins the player pool too. I find it hard to believe u dont see this, i guess your just trolling me, well played sir. :)

@hotwog21: I believe this is exactly what they are doing. The game is mostly finished, except for things like optimization. Meanwhile a select group probably are already on working on maps, and once the game launches, more people can work on maps. I think if you didn't know about maps beforehand, you would not have an issue. But that's not going to happen in this era of season passes because while people can be sold on blind faith, they at least would like to know what it looks like.

@Damnation_6: Yea I'm gonna have to highly disagree with you and I know a lot of the big youtubers that aren't in Activision's pockets like Thunder and JDfromNY agree that BO3 is a really fun cod title. IMO no matter what kind of cod they release people are going to bitch just to bitch and say it sucks but I guess if they wanna ride the cod hate bandwagon they can be my guest.

@se7en1989: No it sucks because it's an Advanced Warfighter Reskin with some fancy Specialist who're over powered and unbalance the hell out of the game, even badies like me who play CS and Battlefield 3-4 can go 75-5 in matches because Razorback+ Any 1 shot kill spec ability+ Hellstorm is broken. Other than some new dash and wall moves, some new killstreaks mixed with a specialist it's pretty much Advanced Warfighter just better optimized.
