All Future Microsoft-Published Games Are Coming to Console and PC [UPDATE]

Microsoft clarifies it only meant the games it showed at E3.

Update: Microsoft's blog post has been updated to narrow the scope of what it promised will support Xbox Play Anywhere. It now states, "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store." Limiting this to games shown at E3 suggests future Microsoft Studios games--say, Halo 6--won't necessarily come to PC.

Original Story: All future games published by Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning they will be available across console and PC.

Now Playing: GS News Update: All Future Microsoft Games Are Coming to Both Xbox One and PC

Though it may not be much of a surprise, Microsoft confirmed this in a blog post detailing the new Anniversary update coming to Xbox One and PC. Here is the exact wording: "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store."

No Caption Provided

Xbox Play Anywhere allows you to buy a game (digitally) on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa. Additionally, your progress moves with you between platforms, including game saves and achievements. In addition to releasing PC games on the Windows Store, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently pledged that Microsoft will put games on Steam again.

The feature, which was announced at E3 last month, kicks off in September this year with the launch of Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune's ReCore. Other 2016 games that make use of Xbox Play Anywhere include Forza Horizon 3 (September 27) and Gears of War 4 (October 11).

You can check out this post to see a rundown of all the Play Anywhere games announced so far.

Halo fans may be especially happy about this news, as it would seem to confirm that Halo 6 will come to PC. In September 2015, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor talked about Halo 6, or whatever it will be called, saying it's undergoing "serious, real planning." Later that year, O'Connor teased that Halo 6 could include split-screen co-op. 2015's Halo 5: Guardians did not include this, and the blowback was "huge," he said.

The Halo franchise is already making its way to PC. Microsoft will release Halo 5's free Forge tools on Windows 10, while 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes teased that this is "just the beginning" for Halo's presence on PC.

In related news, Sony recently suggested it has no plans to introduce any kind of program that would unify PlayStation and PC games.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," PlayStation president Andrew House recently said. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that."

It did seem unlikely they'd commit to every game like that.

Not gonna switch to the shitty Windows 10 again for these MS exclusives under any circumstance, after the last time I had a miserable experience with Win 10 and later rolled back to Win 7...

I bet you there's thousands of gamers panning to sell their X1 and move to the ps4/Neo. Sony thanks you, MS. Great plan LOL.

@silversix_: thousands is nothing when compared to millions who will get a console. And why get a Neo when the Scorpio will be better?

@sladakrobot: One reason I can think of is timing. Neo will probably release a full year before scorpio. Plus I'm getting psvr, and nx... so hopefully still have some money for scorpio. Just seems a long ways off.

@sladakrobot: Get a Neo this November, enjoy upgraded Uncharted, Last Guardian, Horizon, etc. One year later (Scorpio release) you've upgraded your gaming PC beyond Scorpio capabilities, and still have access to all of its top exclusives via Windows versions. Done.

@runstalker: nah,ill get me a dirt cheap og ps4 for Nier2 and Yakuza 6. Next year ill get the Scorpio...upgrading my pc would cost more and buying a new pc doesnt make any sense as i have one to surf and watch movies already.

That is a pc for me-pictures,movies,music,web.

Gaming was always on consoles.

@sladakrobot: Same here, as far as what I use a PC for: photo editing, filing taxes, and sometimes browsing the internet (use my phone for that mostly). I really wish MS would come out with a very basic OS made just for a gaming PC... but maybe that's what the scorpio is.

So force people to buy digital games so the game has no trade in value and then make any MS game not exclusive anymore, so basically i should get a PC or a PS4, this is a terrible move, if the Neo does come out before the Scorpio and is on par, i just might jump ship on MS

@wretch1d: Digital games are great if you get them on sale. I own 2 disc: destiny and uncharted 4 which I bought from a friend (kinda feel bad no one made any money off me lol). But popping disc in and out is dated to me.

@sladakrobot: I'll gladly stay on digital only when my games cost 50-75% less in the same year while console games barely drop in price years later.

@sladakrobot: PC has always been 100% digital they are also cheaper to counter no trade so the point is moot, but where did you see PS4 is 80% digital

@wretch1d: How old are you? PC games were physical for a long time. Last game I got was starcraft 2. With storage being cheaper and high speed internet, most are going digital though.

@sladakrobot: Ok yeah you would have a disc and still have no trade value so again moot, and im guessing you have no articles or evidence for the PS4 comment

@wretch1d: what do you mean with a disc has no trade value? I can trade a disc for another game or i can sell it.

I have no evidence on paper but just talk to your friends who has a ps4 how many games of theirs are physical and how many digital.

@wretch1d: This is an excellent move for somebody like me who has Xbox One and a PC. If somebody wants to use the living room, I can continue the game on my high-end rig. This is how their whole digital-only model will come to fruition: same game, multiple devices.

@ballashotcaller: If you have a high end rig, why the heck would you play the game on your xbox? If you're playing with friends, I understand. But I don't think you can do that on PC to xbox one right? If so, that'd be a really unfair advantage.

Clearly people just don't want to see the reality of the situation here, and articles like this get to prey on that ignorance.

@Moonco: the 'console wars' concept is done (sorry fanboys). Now it's all about platform services.

MS is no longer betting on what particular box you're using (desktops/laptops/hybrids/phone/Surface/Xbox, etc.), just as long as you're plugged in to Windows 10, Win 10 Store, and associated Xbox Live services.

That's where the real money is, not hardware.

Feeding that almighty MAU (Monthly Active Users) is the ultimate vision for this software company coming full circle back to Windows 10 ecosystem integration.

@runstalker: I will miss those closed dedicated Xbox consoles :sniffle: :sniffle: Making fun of them (especially X1) day after day was good times. At least Microsoft is still around to tease so I'm not feeling that bad :-p

Eddie, it took you 7 paragraphs in this article before you mentioned Windows 10, and it wasn't even with regards to Play Anywhere.

Are you actively trying to deceive people into thinking the games run on "any PC" including Windows 7 machines?

That's not the case.

And as for Windows 10 games on Steam, expect them to use their own Windows Store UWP launcher .exe. Similar to dozens of games on Steam that load you into the game's own launcher.

(How else do you expect Play Anywhere saves, profiles, and Xbox Live features to carry over across devices?)

Only the future 'Age of...' games have their own real Steam client.

C'mon Eddie, stay clear and accurate from the headline onwards.

Ouch. Looks like this could very well be the last true Xbox. Likely will be nothing more than a frontend / software platform on arbitrary hardware when this hardware ends its cycle.
