All Future Microsoft-Published Games Are Coming to Console and PC [UPDATE]

Microsoft clarifies it only meant the games it showed at E3.

Update: Microsoft's blog post has been updated to narrow the scope of what it promised will support Xbox Play Anywhere. It now states, "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store." Limiting this to games shown at E3 suggests future Microsoft Studios games--say, Halo 6--won't necessarily come to PC.

Original Story: All future games published by Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning they will be available across console and PC.

Now Playing: GS News Update: All Future Microsoft Games Are Coming to Both Xbox One and PC

Though it may not be much of a surprise, Microsoft confirmed this in a blog post detailing the new Anniversary update coming to Xbox One and PC. Here is the exact wording: "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store."

No Caption Provided

Xbox Play Anywhere allows you to buy a game (digitally) on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa. Additionally, your progress moves with you between platforms, including game saves and achievements. In addition to releasing PC games on the Windows Store, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently pledged that Microsoft will put games on Steam again.

The feature, which was announced at E3 last month, kicks off in September this year with the launch of Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune's ReCore. Other 2016 games that make use of Xbox Play Anywhere include Forza Horizon 3 (September 27) and Gears of War 4 (October 11).

You can check out this post to see a rundown of all the Play Anywhere games announced so far.

Halo fans may be especially happy about this news, as it would seem to confirm that Halo 6 will come to PC. In September 2015, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor talked about Halo 6, or whatever it will be called, saying it's undergoing "serious, real planning." Later that year, O'Connor teased that Halo 6 could include split-screen co-op. 2015's Halo 5: Guardians did not include this, and the blowback was "huge," he said.

The Halo franchise is already making its way to PC. Microsoft will release Halo 5's free Forge tools on Windows 10, while 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes teased that this is "just the beginning" for Halo's presence on PC.

In related news, Sony recently suggested it has no plans to introduce any kind of program that would unify PlayStation and PC games.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," PlayStation president Andrew House recently said. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that."

Do you plan to make use of Play Anywhere? Let us know in the comments below!

@Pokemon18986: You don't need a Gold account for PC games, even online. MS are not daft enough to try that subscription sh*t again on PC (yet!)

@GarGx1: Good thing you put (yet!) at the end of that statement. How would it be fair for pc gamers to play for free yet console gamers need to pay? IDK if they are bringing the free monthly games to pc and maybe that can keep it free on pc but in reality if a console gamer has to pay so should a pc gamer.

@skiggy34: Who said anything about it being 'fair'. It comes down to choice, Xbox is a locked down system with locked down servers that you need to go through MS for, PC is exactly the opposite.

If MS want to try again with GFWL, they will but they'll only fail again because on PC we have options and tons of competition.

Ugh, now for the 2000 "Guess there's no reason for me to ever buy an Xbox then" comments. If that's you, you either had no intention of getting an Xbox anyway or just don't get why people buy consoles in the first place.

@bdrtfm: A lot of those people were probably like me, on the fence. With scorpio announced, I'll more than likely either get that or a gaming PC next year, depending on price. And the correct statement would be "there's slightly less reason to buy an xbox if you have a gaming PC or planning on purchasing one."(There's still reasons to get one, just one less reason)

I have a new Laptop, so if Scorpio is over $500 I'm still covered for all Windows 10 games that will run as good as Scorpio. This will turn out bad new Xbox consoles in the long run, but PC games will have access to all MS franchises now.

@flyincloud1116: You must have a sweet laptop... mine can barely run games. How much was yours? I'm gonna need a new one within the next year and would love to have one that can match scorpios performance.

@flyincloud1116: That must be some laptop to run games better than a system that hasn't even been made yet. Haven't seen many laptops that do 4K for under $1500.00. If you spent that on a laptop, what's another $500 for a Scorpio?

@bdrtfm: Yes, I'll entertain you for a second. 4k, lol. 6flops isn't getting you naive 4k. I didn't get the laptop just for personal use, and yes it was expensive. What does the cost of a laptop have to do with a console purchase price? It's not out yet, but there isn't any mystery to it specs.

@flyincloud1116: You can get 4k out of 6 flops because that is only part of the battle. Do you know anything about graphics? So many people are misled this gen thinking resolution is everything. Why do you think the Xb1 games in 900p look just as good as the ps4 games in 1080p. There have hardly been a difference but its called optimization.. I have a GTX 970 and just yesterday i was playing GTAV in 4k. It dips a tad below 30fps but not to the point where its not playable..

@flyincloud1116: The compute performance is only one aspect of a GPU, many other things determine the overall performance. The GTX 970, 980 and 980ti all had less compute power then their respective AMD counter-parts but managed to beat them in benchmarks.

@turianshepard: No, i'm just highlighting that compute power is not an accurate marker for performance, only real world results can show this so writing off the Scorpio's 4K capabilities before its even released is folly, especially considering its likely to be based on the yet to be released Vega architecture.

@flyincloud1116: If Microsoft is able to get native 4k on all games out of the specs they listed without having any sort of scale back on other graphical content, I will be literally mind blown. PC's already have much higher specs than they revealed and still struggle pulling it off without putting out some serious cash (although its starting to get more manageable). I simply cannot see how they are going to be able to pull that off. Anyone who knows anything about gaming performance knows theirs something really not right about these claims. Just saying.

@Spanky226: Keep in mind its up to the devs, not MS. MS is building a console capable of playing games in native 4k. Whether or not a dev does it is another story. This is why things get so tangled in the world, especially with media. Look at your comment, did you even listen to Phil Spencer?? Your probably just going off what some other yoyo said and now you think you know everything.. Just sayin.....

@Spanky226: MS revealed 3 facts:6tf,8 core processor and 320gb/s memory. I guess there several are other components which will also be very strong in performance but MS isnt ready yet to speak about

@sladakrobot: the 8 core processor without specs is a little scary. Xbox one and ps4 have that. The 320gb/s has little meaning also... I mean look at the ps4, xbox one: 176gb/s and 65gb/s? (Something like that)... that's a huge gap that didn't do a whole lot. Even the 1.84tflops to 1.3 is a big difference that didn't do much. I'm hoping scorpio is a beast of a console... we really are due for one. I don't like how they taunted the numbers (and sounded like idiots that don't know anything about hardware). Hopefully more details come out soon.

@Spanky226: Well if you are expecting "all games" to be 4K you will obviously be disappointed. At no time did they say all games will be in 4K. They said it will be capable of 4K gaming, not that it will mandate 4K games.

@flyincloud1116: Really? No mystery? Can you point me to the link of the white papers regarding the design? They wouldn't be saying it can do 4K if they weren't planning on making sure it can do 4K. There is a lot more to graphics than just the GPU's potential number of flops. You've no idea what this system will be capable of.

They are really pulling out all the stops. Let's see now if the appeal of their exclusives is strong enough on PC to make people not care about UWP and having to upgrade to windows 10.

of course... with disappointing x1 sales, microsoft has no choice but to port all future titles to the pc as well. that is the only way they can remain profitable. i won't be upgrading to windows 10 just to play specific microsoft games, though. also, i think many people prefer to play their games via steam, so that is something microsoft needs to consider as well. looking forward to cuphead and i would also play sunset overdrive, but that is about it from microsoft's offerings.

Please don't infect the pc version of Halo with console plagues. Proper keyboard and mouse with full pc support. Separate xbox and pc players using m&k for fair matchmaking and please don't try to do the idiotic "gimping" or imposing penalties and handicaps to pc gamers like requiring to stop to shoot accurately, or inflict ludacris recoil etc to make console gamers have a better chance. Don't force crossplay unless there are seperate lobbies for pc gamers wanting to use a controller.

@Thanatos2k: One could make a compelling argument that Thanatos2k being on PC is what makes it the absolute worst gaming platform.

Or, to expand on that and be more fair/accurate, it's the worst platform because Thanatos2k and a million others like him are on it.

@Spartan_418: Surely Xbox Live players are just the most civilized people on the planet and would never shout slurs at you through voice chat.

Yeah those damn PC users, with their non-crippled control inputs and wanting to decide multiplayer games on skill. Surely the worst platform for people who can't hack it.

@kadaverhagga: Calm down, they've already confirmed that Play Anywhere shooters will only allow cross-platform play for co-op modes, where everyone is on the same side and it shouldn't matter how pretentious you feel about your choice of control input.

Competitive multiplayer will be kept separate.

Great news that means all the games will have a chance of a much bigger player base and community. There is no downside to this.
