All Future Microsoft-Published Games Are Coming to Console and PC [UPDATE]

Microsoft clarifies it only meant the games it showed at E3.

Update: Microsoft's blog post has been updated to narrow the scope of what it promised will support Xbox Play Anywhere. It now states, "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store." Limiting this to games shown at E3 suggests future Microsoft Studios games--say, Halo 6--won't necessarily come to PC.

Original Story: All future games published by Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning they will be available across console and PC.

Now Playing: GS News Update: All Future Microsoft Games Are Coming to Both Xbox One and PC

Though it may not be much of a surprise, Microsoft confirmed this in a blog post detailing the new Anniversary update coming to Xbox One and PC. Here is the exact wording: "Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store."

No Caption Provided

Xbox Play Anywhere allows you to buy a game (digitally) on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa. Additionally, your progress moves with you between platforms, including game saves and achievements. In addition to releasing PC games on the Windows Store, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently pledged that Microsoft will put games on Steam again.

The feature, which was announced at E3 last month, kicks off in September this year with the launch of Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune's ReCore. Other 2016 games that make use of Xbox Play Anywhere include Forza Horizon 3 (September 27) and Gears of War 4 (October 11).

You can check out this post to see a rundown of all the Play Anywhere games announced so far.

Halo fans may be especially happy about this news, as it would seem to confirm that Halo 6 will come to PC. In September 2015, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor talked about Halo 6, or whatever it will be called, saying it's undergoing "serious, real planning." Later that year, O'Connor teased that Halo 6 could include split-screen co-op. 2015's Halo 5: Guardians did not include this, and the blowback was "huge," he said.

The Halo franchise is already making its way to PC. Microsoft will release Halo 5's free Forge tools on Windows 10, while 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes teased that this is "just the beginning" for Halo's presence on PC.

In related news, Sony recently suggested it has no plans to introduce any kind of program that would unify PlayStation and PC games.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," PlayStation president Andrew House recently said. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that."

LMAO a console with zero exclusives. Now this, this is a console worth ignoring. When was the last time we saw such a useless console? Right about never. Ouya has more exclusives than Xbone at this point lol

@pspearman: they do, yes. Reason why i haven't purchased a single game from their store,,, yet. Their shitty MS store will blow out and games will be sold on steam. Its only a matter of time. Just look at Quantum Flop and Tomb Raider... they sold like 11 copies each *on the Microsoft store*. Devs can't be very happy about this.

@silversix_: you're still not seeing the big picture. No, the MS Store will not "blow out" (what?) to Steam. If and when games are sold on Steam, you'll be launching said Windows 10 game using a Windows Store UWP .exe front end launcher.

How else do you expect Play Anywhere saves, account profiles, and associated Xbox Live services to carry over across devices?

Don't be naive, folks. It's a nice enough feature (cross-buy, cross-play on XB Live) but it's NOT about 'opening up' -- rather, it's all about herding the masses into the Windows 10/Store/UWP/Xbox Live ecosystem.

Just don't be blind here. You can be totally pro MS and still 'call them out' for the strategy. Open your eyes.

@sladakrobot: Its funny how MS fanboys jump from hope n dreams to another hope n dreams made by MS. At first, it was the cloud and the Kinect, then a 2nd top secret gpu, then superior opimization down the road, then DX12 and now a brand new console cuz X1 failed at EVERYTHING. Ya'll are funny bunch. Enjoy riding MS promises and if you think the Bone 2.0 will be able to handle NATIVE 4k on anything but simplistic visuals, you don't understand how power hungry 4k truly is. A real MS costumer, the ones that don't understand anything tech related but believe anything a big company such as MS tells em. Good luck with your scorpio and you'd be lucky to see anything but indie titles in true native 4k. You probably don't even own a 4k tv/monitor so why are we talking a bout 4k again? lolz.

@silversix_: A GTX980 can run many games at high settings while averaging 30FPS at 4K resolutions and the GPU in the scorpio will be more powerful and benefit from more optimization. Sure, many developers will choose to use the GPU grunt to deliver better graphics at the expense of resolution but to say the Scorpio won't be able to do native 4K at good graphical levels is stupid.

Why would Eddie quote Playstation? MS IS both console and pc. Sony isn't. I think this play anywhere idea is awesome!! I actually have a very capable gaming rig so this will work out great for me. I'm willing to bet most console gamers dont have a gaming pc and games like Halo aren't going to run on some old pc or budget pc, at least not well. So this is a typical Eddie article pretty much making it sound like anyone without an Xbox miraculously will be able to play Halo 6 but he fails to mention the costs of a gaming rig.. SMH

The last few months have shown that MS have realised that supporting their biggest selling (does 'free' count as 'selling'?) product with games is good thing to do and far more important than having all their games locked away on a separate system altogether.

@GarGx1: microsoft's approach is reactionary. they have no choice but to open up to pc since their xbox division is not doing very well at present. had x1 sold 40m units and they were in the lead this cycle, pc would not be a priority for them. why? because they would rather have people purchasing their console hardware and xbox specific software and have people getting deep into their xbox ecosystem, rather than open the floodgates to the pc market where their profit margins will be much smaller. companies prefer a closed ecosystem due to the control that comes with it.

@Xristophoros: There were hints before the Xbox One released and they've only increased until E3 this year when it was as good as confirmed. Regardless of it being planned or reactionary, this is good for PC gamers, Xbox gamers and Microsoft.

@GarGx1: it's good for gamers on the whole. it is bad for microsoft... they are going to have greater difficulty selling x1 hardware now as the incentives are much lower now for some gamers. this might be the turning point we will look to 5 years from now if microsoft gets out of the console hardware business. rather than release the scorpio, i think they should release a modular pc that runs windows. they can still call it xbox if they wish... that would make more sense.

@Xristophoros: To be honest I think both MS and Sony going down a modular 'PC' route would be a better idea for them. Doing so would mean the end of required backward compatibility (good for gamers) and massively reduce the huge expense, to both companies, in research and development of dedicated hardware. It's worked well for the PC market no reason why the console companies shouldn't follow suit.

At the moment the PS4 and Xbox One are non upgradable PC's they just need to take the next step.

@Xristophoros: That would only be true of gamers that would truly choose only PC or XB1. I would guess that would be a very small population. I know many people that game on XB1 and they have zero plans to game on PC after this announcement. Yes, that is just my friends, however they are generally a very good indicator of how the mass public thinks, as I have known them for 15 years. they are very consistent with what the mind set is across the industry.

@spartanx169x: Pretty much. There are millions of people who just prefer consoles. People can call them casuals or whatever they want but they support a huge part of the market and do not care for PC gaming and like the ease of consoles. They also could care less where the games go as long as they are available to them on there platform of choice.

I'm going to go out on a limb here:

If you are a dedicated PC Master racer, you weren't going to buy a Scorpio.

^result of this move from MS: a few more games are made available to you now, should you want to play them. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you are a console-only gamer, then you weren't going to build a PC anyway.

^result of this move from MS: nothing. You were gonna get Halo 6 on Scorpio, and you're still gonna get Halo 6 on Scorpio. This doesn't hurt you in any way

The only people who are really *kind* of harmed by this are the "primarily PC gamer crowd who ALREADY bought an X1 for a handful of games in the next year or so". People who had a good PC but spent additional money on a non-favored platform on the incorrect assumption that you HAD to do so IF you wanted to play said games. I can understand your demographic being miffed.

Other than this demographic, everyone else seems like they will either a) be unaffected or b) slightly benefit from this move. Then there are the folks who are mad because their claims of "exclusivity" become somewhat weaker - now your friend you like to tease for "only" having a PS and PC can play your games too? Bummer... or not. Because in reality this doesn't hurt your gaming experience at all and, if anything, gives you another body to potentially play with online.

@spartanx169x: fair enough/another good exception. As noted above, my point wasn't really that "only" this user or that user would buy a Scorpio, but rather that having these games on Scorpio, X1, and PC doesn't really hurt anyone except the few who maybe just recently made a hardware purchase that they felt they "had" to make which it turns out it was instead optional when moving forward

its basically a guarantee that MS dont care about xb1 sales anymore. they know full well that they will end-up shafting people who dont upgrade, own a highend pc or be known as the company that creates underpowered games for over powered hardware to keep with the xb1. i dont know whats worse, having to live with redundant technology if you are unable to upgrade or owning crappyer software not able to use your hardware to its fullist.

@neowarrior793: I don't understand how people don't get that there is a spectrum even in the PC space. There are people who don't have the latest PC parts and therefore system requirements are still going to seem incredibly low to someone with a $1000+ setup. I remember once someone said if there were no consoles it would accelerate game development. They didn't take into account that you can buy a computer for $200. They are such versatile machines with so many combinations and developers are always going to try and reach as many people as possible.

The preorders for the X1s is promising and ppl are excited for Scorpio.

I think it is your wish which makes you commenting like that.

99%of all pc gamers doesnt care about consoles or the X1 but would likely play MS games. And here is the deal...MS sells more games.

I am console gamer, the fact that the pc platform gets the same game will not bring me jumping to pcs.

@sladakrobot: but thats stupid, nobodys going to buy an xb1 anymore you simply get a pc. you will also find many pc gamers buy consoles just for the locked out games, there xb1s are pointless now. and who's going to buy a scorpio when its price could be way more then a pc with most likely have weaker specs as well. your argument is pointless and illogical.

@sladakrobot: I think Scorpio is going to be more powerful or just as powerful as a high end pc. Anyone below that in the pc space will obviously have inferior setups. If what Phil is sayng is right and the gpu is in comparison to a 980 (maybe Ti) than anything 970 and below is weaker and 90% of the pc gamers I know are still using 750Ti's

Unless a lot of them are cross play, especially good ones, I'm not interested. They still need to sort out Windows 10, I hear it's still a mess for people that play games, older games too now, like that stupid notorious update that stops old games from working. If they don't sort it out by the end of July I'll be staying with Windows 7 so I won't even be able to play these new windows games.

@Johny_47: Windows 10 is a fantastic O/S for gaming and probably the most stable I've used in the 26 years I've been gaming on PC. The App Store and UWP are a different story but there is the possibility of MS games going to Steam, which would be a perfect solution

@Johny_47: Where do you hear all this nonsense? I have it since day 1 and runs like a dream.

@Johny_47: I have yet to have a problem running old games in Windows 10. I can't vouch for the Windows store stuff, as I only have Forza 6: Apex there (a new game built for that "platform"), but my Steam and GoG library works just fine

@Johny_47: I have Windows 10 and have over 300 games installed and running. I've never had a single issue with anything. Everything runs perfectly, as it does for all my friends running Windows 10. People just look for a reason to bash it. Its far superior to Windows 8, and honestly imo is now superior to Windows 7 in terms of performance and features. This is a good time to be a PC gamer, and this news is honestly great to me. Gonna be awesome playing Halo again on PC.

@Spanky226: Do you know if they finally got LOTR:War in the North working? That was the only game I've played that was glitched on 10 to the point that it couldn't be finished.
