Aliens vs. Predator banned in Australia

[UPDATE] Sega and Rebellion's xenomorph-versus-hunter-versus-marines reboot refused classification down under; censor cites explicit violence.

In the '80s-era action film Predator, Austrian beefcake and now California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famously quipped, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." It seems Australia's Classification Board didn't like the amount of bleeding present in Sega and Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator reboot for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, effectively banning the game down under by refusing it classification.

The latest banning comes in the same week that the massively multiplayer online game CrimeCraft was refused classification for showing positive effects from in-game drug use. In Aliens vs. Predator's case, however, it seems violence was the key offender, with a Classification Board spokesperson confirming to GameSpot AU that the game's bloody content was to blame.

Sega Australia has confirmed the banning and has not ruled out appealing the decision. "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been refused classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal," the company said in a statement.

In previous game bans in Australia, some developers have opted to make changes to their games in order to pass the classification process. The most recent example is the toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve was forced to release the revised edition down under when the original, unedited version was banned.

GameSpot AU has requested a full copy of the board's decision but had not received it at the time of publication.

[UPDATE] The Classification Board has now released its official ruling to GameSpot AU, and Aliens vs. Predator's high-impact violence was indeed a motivating factor for the ban.

"The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board report stated.

"Characters can be stabbed with a Predator's wrist blade or an Alien's tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement. The Predator collects 'trophies' by explicitly ripping off human heads, their spinal columns dangling from severed necks. Heads can be twisted completely around in order to break a character's neck. Eyes can be stabbed through or gouged, leaving empty, bloodied eye sockets.

"It is noted that a player is able to combine manoeuvres together in quick succession, which further increases impact; for example, a Predator can stab a character through both eyes with its wrist blade and rip off their head, with spinal column still attached. Extensive post-mortem damage, including decapitation and dismemberment, is also possible."

But...it's just a video game, all that blood, gore, carnage are all fictional. What is their problem? That's just plain ridiculous, it's like PC gone overboard. Even then, common sense would say, most parents wouldn't buy a mature rated game to their children. It's not like games would turn children into violent psychopaths. The same goes for movies.

This is utter crap! Seriously, lately the Australian censorship/government has been acting in a very strange way. I don't fully understand the whole point of this. I feel sorry for the gamers that live there.

Sorry i meant the CENSORED version of Left 4 Dead 2 is less violent than the original. The uncensored version is just insane.

Looks like i will be doing the same thing i did with Postal 2, Soldier of Fortune Payback and Left 4 Dead 2 - buying it from overseas. The only one who will be missing out are the Australian business' who will get snubbed in favour of overseas online retailers. The problem is that there seems to be no real consistancy with the OFLC's decisions. Left 4 Dead 2 was less violent than the original, and we all remember the graphic dismemberment from Soldier of Fortune 2, a very violent game even by todays standards - more so than Left 4 Dead 2's censored version. No consistancy whatsoever.

Have to say i'm ok with the classification board doing it's job and preventing KIDS 15, 16 and 17 from playing games with this kind of violence, theres PLENTY of other games these sorts of KIDS could be playing. However, not having an R 18+ rating at this point is becoming a joke. I'm old enough to drive, old enough to drink, old enough to vote etc. but i'm not old enough to decide if i want or can play certain video games? The game is rated 18+ in other countrys already (according to wikipedia)... how many banning's will it take Australia before we take some effective action about an overhaul to our ratings system?

surprise, surprise, we have a new record here, it seems this is the 6th game this year that has been banned, making this year the year of most banned games. See what you are doing Atkinson you big goof, you letting , more and more games get banned, why as you will not say yes to a R rating for games, kids will see this some how, lets see here like threw ebay or of a UK site. Why dont you get out of the stone age and say yes, i guess the next game will be dead rising 2, why because you live in the stone age, why dont you give us adults we want, not all games are meant for rugrats.

I read a great article recently that explained that this is all due to OZ not having an 18 or adults only certificate for games. Hence the ban which I can understand. FRankly I dont think ANY kids should be playing ANY video games at all. I;m sick of hearing brats squeak in my ear about how they pwn in MW2. BAN KIDS not games!

Oh give me a break!!! I still can't believe we don't have a R18+ rating for games in Australia. The amount of lost revenue for gaming stores and retail stores would be huge. And then not only is the classification board robbing retailers of money, the very games they ban to 'protect' children are slightly modified and sold to those kids anyway!!!! THINK ABOUT IT ATKINSON!!! YOU CAN'T PROTECT ALL THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD!!! Parents have a bloody responsibility to their kids and stop blaming society/films/books/games and anything else they can think of to 'pass the buck'. Looks like alot of people will be importing this one.

Don't you people get it? this is what happens when you vote for the labor party. If you live in SA for god's sake DONT VOTE LABOR. We need an attorney general in SA with some common sense, not a left-wing hack. left-wing equals more government control including telling us what we can watch, play etc. Welcome to social democracy

maybe it wouldn't be banned in AUS if they had a 18/adult-only classification. in Germany it is banned and we do have an 18/adult-only classification. banned not cos it isn't suitable for teens but cos it's glorifying violence. :/

@G-tyrant93 The movies were much more graphic than the games, yet the games are banned. Sure, you take control of the character, but that doesn't change anything. These games are for mature individuals; any parent who dares to buy this game for their child obviously doesn't want them growing up in a humble environment.
