Aliens vs. Predator banned in Australia

[UPDATE] Sega and Rebellion's xenomorph-versus-hunter-versus-marines reboot refused classification down under; censor cites explicit violence.

In the '80s-era action film Predator, Austrian beefcake and now California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famously quipped, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." It seems Australia's Classification Board didn't like the amount of bleeding present in Sega and Rebellion's upcoming Aliens vs. Predator reboot for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, effectively banning the game down under by refusing it classification.

The latest banning comes in the same week that the massively multiplayer online game CrimeCraft was refused classification for showing positive effects from in-game drug use. In Aliens vs. Predator's case, however, it seems violence was the key offender, with a Classification Board spokesperson confirming to GameSpot AU that the game's bloody content was to blame.

Sega Australia has confirmed the banning and has not ruled out appealing the decision. "SEGA Australia can today confirm that the initial submission of Aliens vs Predator has been refused classification by the Classification Operations Board of Australia. We will continue to investigate all options available to us, including the possibility of appeal," the company said in a statement.

In previous game bans in Australia, some developers have opted to make changes to their games in order to pass the classification process. The most recent example is the toned-down version of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve was forced to release the revised edition down under when the original, unedited version was banned.

GameSpot AU has requested a full copy of the board's decision but had not received it at the time of publication.

[UPDATE] The Classification Board has now released its official ruling to GameSpot AU, and Aliens vs. Predator's high-impact violence was indeed a motivating factor for the ban.

"The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes," the board report stated.

"Characters can be stabbed with a Predator's wrist blade or an Alien's tail in depictions reminiscent of impalement. The Predator collects 'trophies' by explicitly ripping off human heads, their spinal columns dangling from severed necks. Heads can be twisted completely around in order to break a character's neck. Eyes can be stabbed through or gouged, leaving empty, bloodied eye sockets.

"It is noted that a player is able to combine manoeuvres together in quick succession, which further increases impact; for example, a Predator can stab a character through both eyes with its wrist blade and rip off their head, with spinal column still attached. Extensive post-mortem damage, including decapitation and dismemberment, is also possible."

Every description of every bloody, violent act in this article just makes me want to see it for myself. This game is supposed to be violent after all.

Why don't they just announce the games that pass in Australia since most games get blocked.

At this rate, Aussies might just ban anything "violent". With the already overpriced games ... Aussy gamers, time to move out. :

What is this, like, the third or fourth story this week about a game being banned in Australia? I don't live there, thankfully, but I agree that they need to stop dragging their feet, and get that R18 rating NOW! It's doing more harm than good not having it.

Yeah they should have a big strike =P because I watched my friend play God of War 3 and he ripped out a cyclops's eye and ripped off someone's head one that, also is Gears of War, GTA IV & Dead Space banned in Australia? well if not then what the heck is up with this ban because Gears of War has the curb stomp AND that incredibly brutal Torque Bow execution. GTA IV is just full of violence everywhere =D and they said about dismemberment which is takin off limbs I think, Dead Space is full of that even though you need to against most enemies =/ might be a big shame for the Aussies.

What is wrong with the Australian Government. I live in the U.S. and I say "Give the Australian gamers an 18+ rating" so they can play all of the good games that come out!

BANS DO NOT MATTER: Do not worry people. If it is banned, just import it. eBay is great. They make the game sound good though.

Wow, this banning is bad news for me. I'm a huge fan of the original Alien and Predator movies, and was looking forward to playing AvP. Hopefully Sega will appeal, though I doubt it'll get passed unless they butcher it Left 4 Dead 2 style.

Does anyone remember predator 2 when in the museum there were gutted human carcasses hanging from the ceiling? No one had a problem with that! If you're going to ban the game. Might as well just ban the movies. Because when you compare the violence factor from the game to the movie. It makes no difference. Australia's piracy level is at it's peak. When you ban a game, people are going to be curious what's all the fuss and download it. I'll bet you when these refused games come out in other countries. There is going to be a massive piracy bump, and the morons at Parliament are going to take a while to figure that out.

I'm more likely to turn into a violent psychopath after reading about MP's rather than playing a game - lets ban them instead!

Man, we are closer to that very, very scary police state where we are told what we can watch, what we can play, what we can put into our bodies as adults and what we are able to do in the privacy of our own home... So do we really live in a free society? Not even close. And it's getting worse... more restrictive, and taking away what not only children can see, but taking the rights away from law abiding adults is just wrong, and sets a very dangerous precedent for future generations to come... They chip away a little bit at a time... chip, chip, chip..... we hardly notice it... but when you look at all the liberties that have been stripped away from us over the last 30 years even, it's staggering.
