After Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Capcom Could Revive Other "Dormant" Franchises

Capcom got a lot of attention this past weekend when it announced Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, the first game in the series in five years, at the PlayStation Experience event. Now, the company has suggested that other "dormant" Capcom franchises could be revived.

The Japanese publisher said today in a news release that, in addition to releasing "major" games like Infinite every year, the company will focus on reviving dormant franchises. These are properties that have not seen a new release in recent history, Capcom said. Capcom did not outright name any candidates for possible revivals.

The revival campaign begins with Infinite, which is the first brand-new entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom since 2012's Marvel vs. Capcom Origins. The new game is slated for a late 2017 release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

The Marvel vs. Capcom series began in 1999, and has subsequently seen a handful of sequels and spinoffs. In its statement today, Capcom said Infinite aims to appeal to fans of the series, as well we people who may know about Marvel characters from the company's movies, comic books, and TV shows. The game will have a "robust" story mode and "accessible" single-player content.

On the subject of Infinite's accessibility, Marvel Games executive producer Mike Jones said hardcore fans don't need to worry, as the game will still offer depth and a high skill ceiling.

Finally, Capcom revealed today that it has shipped 7 million Marvel vs. Capcom games since the franchise debuted in 1999.
